Title: Life in RS5 - part I : Economy
Post by: Gandalf on November 08, 2013, 12:23:30 pm
With the public beta running and people being able to see a glimpse of the future, it is time to start a series of topics on what we changed, how and why. Read carefully as these topics will also show you which things are bugged or missing commands, and that may change your opinion on what we made a lot.

The RS4 economy had many challenges. First of all it was destroying money by huge amounts. Whatever was spent on weapons, food and fuel dropped in to a black hole. The result was that we needed things like paydays, lottos and many invisible money distributions to keep things running.
This is one of the reasons why we never closed some exploits, as they actually made it easier to keep the economy running.

In the ideas board it was often requested to make a bank account for a group or business, from which more than a single person could take money. This to make for easier connection between players from the same group who are in different time zones and can not always meet.

Then there was the issue of economic robbery. When RS3 came out we had a pickpocket scripted, but the problem was people simply abused it by constant use until they 'plucked' all cash. The RP robberies however are a bad replacement, as they often seem an excuse to kill someone even ifthey do give money.

While making the ideas, this is how we solved the points above:
1. All money spent flows back in to the bank. From there things like loans and payments are done, meaning that the total amount of money in the economy is stable. A result is that managers will no longer be abl to hand out unlimited paydays, and they will once again become a rare occurrence only on special events and parties.

2. We created the wallet. Now this may seem complicated but it has a very good usage for roleplay. First of all if your wallet is active it will work like cash and bank in the old times. So no need to complain, anything that did not work yet in the test is a bug.
Second, if you carry a wallet someone can pickpocket your loose change. Change is maximum of 5000, and can only be stolen if you carry a wallet. This means that you decide if you wish to engage in a robbery or pickpocket roleplay, if you do not wish this you can just not carry change or leave your wallet at home.
Yes, wallets can be left in a safe at home, or can be given to other players. That is the reason we created them. This gives opposrtunity to give wallets to a member of your group, to kidnappers and pay drug deals. It will open the possibility of scamming with the contents, but that is all in the game.
Also we created the possibility to have multiple bank accounts, on your request. As well as to have more than one card from a bank account so that group members (or your wife/husband) can all access the bank account. With of course the possibility to have it blocked in case they leave and awithdrawal limit to ensure a fired member will not at once plunder your accounts.
Still it will be your responsibility who has access, so do not run to admins if a person you trusted with your accounte details uses them.

3. For new players the welcome cahs has decreased to 5000 in loose change. This also means they can not be pickpocketed until they obtain a wallet, which will be given with their passport, and will contain another 5000. This will lower the amount of multiaccounters, as change has limited use.

This is enoug for the first part.

About the /pickpocket thing, what will block players from running past someone and spamming /pickpocket? Is there a timer, or a confirmation from the other side needed?

The maximum you can lose is your loose change. Ifyou do not want to lose money, do not keep any money in change or do not carry a wallet. Both will protect you.

There's something like a timer, you can't spam it.

But if we don't carry a wallet, we can't spend money either, right?
such as for paying a mechanic or entering a bizz or whatever... hmmm?

Without a wallet you can carry 5k
Enough for fuel and repairing your car many times.

I like this economy system, keeping the economy stable, also increasing role play within groups instead of DMing for money, assets and such.
