Title: Odd amount of BSODs

So I was given a laptop to look into, whether I could fix it or not.
If necessary, specs are the following

Model: Asus UL30A
CPU: Intel Celeron SU2300
RAM: 3GB DDR3
GPU: Intel HD Graphics, I believe (I haven't had the chance to check it yet)

The computer boots up without issues, though here comes the weird part. Some times you can use the laptop for 5 minutes without issues, sometimes it pops up a BSOD immediately after showing desktop icons.

Error messages vary, I have gotten such messages so far (checked all minidump files)

• SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - 0x1000007e - fltmgr.sys, ntoskrnl.exe, mountmgr.sys
• BAD_POOL_CALLER - 0x000000c2 - fileinfo.sys, ntfs.sys, symefa64.sys
• BAD_POOL_HEADER - 0x00000019 - AsDsm.sys, ntoskrnl.exe
• NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM - 0x00000024 - ntfs.sys
• CACHE_MANAGER - 0x00000034 - fltmgr.sys
• SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - 0x0000003b - ntoskrnl.exe, ntfs.sys, ccSetx64.sys, BHDrvx64.sys, fltmgr.sys,
• KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - 0x0000001e - ntoskrnl.exe

Even though some error codes indicate faulty RAM or HDD, I have done some tests.

Chkdsk – no errors.
Memtest86+ - no errors (3 passes).
Updated graphics + chipset drivers - nothing went better.

Currently looking for Windows 7 disc and method to backup all the data. Any other ideas to try before I go for clean reinstall?

Upon installing Windows 7, if there alreaxy exists one installation on the HDD with W7, it will prompt you to move the old files to an folder 'windows.old' and replace them with new while installing. It comes handy sometimes instead of moving the files out and then again in!

Ah, sweet! Definitely better way than moving all the data to my external HDD.

If the clean install doesn't work then it's defiantly a hardware issue which by some of those BSODS suggest so. As to what is faulty then that's a different matter.

I would also beware of malicious software on the system. BSOD's are VERY commonly caused by inexperienced users picking up viruses and spyware these days. If you do go ahead and keep the old stuff backed up, I would highly recommend running full Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware scans on it before giving the system back.

To be honest, what you're thinking of doing is probably the best, if you reinstall it and you still get them, it rules out a software issue.

If it's a hardware issue judging by the messages it could be a HDD issue. The HDD doesn't often just fail like that though, I'd guess a reinstall would fix it.
