The German, 44, who retired from F1 for a second time in 2012, was taken by helicopter to hospital in Moutiers before being moved to Grenoble.
BBC Radio 5 live F1 correspondent James Allen said: "The injury is serious, but not life threatening."

Not yet. Seems there are still some things that need to settle before they can try to wake him up.
I hope he will recover enough to enjoy his life further. He has all he needs.

I hope so as well although there might be severe brain injuries.

It's very sad that these, such serious incidents, are not too uncommon.
Prince Friso's skiing accident would still be fresh in many people's minds.
