Title: Is my UEFI fucked or am i just high
Post by: GladyGlados on December 31, 2013, 12:12:16 am
Just got a new laptop and the UEFI reports 64MB of Dedicated video ram. CYRI reports 32mb Dedicated. Steam Reports 512mb Dedicated.
What the fuck is going on.

Acer Aspire E1-570
CPU Intel Core i3 Dual Core 1.8ghz
Ram - 8gb DDR3
Graphics - Intel HD 4000
HDD - 1tb

If these are correct with what my UEFI says then answer this. How the fuck can i play Mafia II on high with 60fps (According to fraps)

What the UEFI is reporting will be correct but I believe the minimum that chip can be allocated is 32mb. Of course as it has not dedicated memory it will take what it needs from the system.

Whatever it is it's nothing to fret over.

So what you are saying is if a game needs 1GB of Video Memory to function it will just take it out of my 8gb

Yes, pretty much.

Since your graphics are integrated with your CPU, it has no dedicated video RAM and has to take some out of your CPU RAM.

You may want to check inside UEFI, how much RAM can be used by the APU's graphics (though not all may have that possibility). If it is set to Auto, it can change.

Personally I have set it to 512 MB (temporarily 2 displays, 1 running from APU's GPU and other running from separate GPU).

Pretty much this. Integrated graphics are annoying in that respect sometimes. There are also forms of integrated graphics that will either have a separate GPU, (which is more common in higher-end systems with integrated graphics), or will use the CPU itself to process everything, thus slowing down your speeds more, (which is very common in older setups, especially from brand-name companies).
