how does this work with copyright laws? is internet radio allowed with music you have not purchased the rights to?

Possibly not the answer you were looking for.
Each radio station has to pay royalties but not many radio stations on the internet do. It doesn't matter if you purchased the music or not, you still have to pay royalties on your own radio station.
