Basically when I click the power button the lights will flash for half a second then nothing happens, no fans no life atall just want to double check it is the PSU that needs replacing before I order one, thanks.

If you haven't touched anything internally "hardware related" lately and now it refuses to start up, it's possible that the PSU could be at fault.
Have to made sure all of the cables, specifically power cables are connected correctly to the PC itself?
-
it's definately not any cables and I must note looking into the case(it's see through case) I can see no motherboard lights on and the ethernet cable isn't flashing either when inserted.
-
If the cables internally and externally have been checked and you're certain nothing has been messed with then it's highly possible that it could be the PSU that has died given the fact that no lights at all are coming on

okay thanks going to pick one up later bro, until then mothers laptop will have to make do :P

You said the power button flashes for a half-second. Do the fans even begin to start spinning before the power cuts out? Also, have you recently done any modifications to, (or installed any new hardware within), the system?
Do the lights flash for that half second every time you push the button, or did they only do it one time?
