An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 14-year-old from Caterham.
Computer engineer Lewis Daynes, of Roseberry Road, Grays, in Essex, appeared at Basildon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. He was remanded in custody to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday.
The victim has not been formally identified but is believed to be Breck Bednar, 14, from Caterham.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "The preliminary results from the post-mortem examination indicate that he died as a result of a wound to the neck."
The spokesman added that Breck's parents, oil futures trader Barry Bednar and mother Lorin LaFave, were being supported by family liaison officers.
Police were called to a flat off Roseberry Road, in Grays, at 11am on Tuesday (February 18) where the youngster was found with knife wounds.
He died following desperate attempts to save him.
Meanwhile, police have refused to comment on a post on the internet that suggested Breck had travelled to Essex to see someone he had met online.
'Thoughts and prayers'
Breck was a pupil at Saint Bede's School in Redhill, and was believed to have previously attended St John's CofE Primary School in Caterham.
Chris Curtis, headteacher at Saint Bede's, described the teenager as a "model student".
In a statement, he said: "We were devastated to hear the awful news about Breck Bednar, a student in Year 10.
"Breck was a bright and hard working student who teachers describe as a real pleasure to teach.
"His tutor described him as 'a model student: a conscientious young man with a great deal of potential'.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and with all affected."
Breck's local church, St John's in Caterham Valley, also issued a statement following news of his death.
"The loss of a young life is always a tragedy, but especially under the circumstances of Breck's death," it said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Breck's family and friends at this difficult time.
"May he rest in peace."
Tributes
Vicar Jerry Garton added: "Breck's family are very much in our prayers.
"The church will be open for anyone who wants to come in and light a candle."
A flood of tributes have been paid to the teenager on social media sites.
One said: "RIP Breck, thoughts go out to the family, horrible to think a boy from Bedes was killed like that."
And another added: "rip breck, you were such a lovely boy, I only knew you a short while at St Johns, but you didn't deserve to die."
Anyone with any information in connection with the case, and who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact Stanway Serious Crime on Essex Police 101.
Oh, and by the way.. I knew the guy who murdered a kid. I actually played video games with him.... This is shocking to me, and everyone who knew this. Nobody would have ever expected or even thought he could do such a horrible thing.. My condolences go to the murdered persons relatives..

I'd like to know this as well. Seems that's not the only thing that caused it.

Yeah! Lets make video games the cause of it because we can't come up with an explanation of why the murder happened!

Guys.. Calm your tits.. If you read the bottom, it clearly says I knew the guy who murdered the kid. The murderer and the victim used to both play Battlefield 4 together, but the last we heard of both of them, they were arguing over something and it appears that the victim has been harassing him. Then the guy told us he's going to go working abroad and will not be here for a month and a half. It turns out he went to the victim.. I knew the guy.. He was a hardcore BF 4 fan.

There's mental retardation too.

Right.. so no proof, great.
It isn't BF4 people, this person just thinks he knew them and suddenly it was becuase of BF4.
If you play BF4 with someone it doesn't mean you will stab them for what they did in BF4. Now I will go on a murder spree and blame SAMP because I played the game hurr.
You might think you know someone, but do you really know him, did you go through his search history.. maybe he wanted to nuke russia and the murdered just saved a quarter of earth, you are worse than the media, if he didn't have the disc in his hand and cut his throat with it, and even than you have no fucking proof.. This wasn't because of BF4 stop imagining things.
