Title: Buying a PC
Post by: Luke on November 05, 2014, 06:41:00 pm: Well, its that time in my computers life where It is coming to the end of its life.
I have had this system for 2 years now, (when I got into gaming)
I have;

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHZ (Cannot OC due to some BS Motherboard)
4GB DDR3 1333MHZ
500GB Segate 7200rpm SATAS x2
Sapphire Dual-X R9 270x

Due to the CPU being from 07, and the GPU from 2013, I believe I have pushed the boundaries of this CPU and now it is bottlenecking, due to I should get 60fps+ Ultra BF3 according to sites, but I am getting -30fps on Low, (worse then my R7 260x, 660ti, This card is more powerful then both).. I did ask on some forum sites and said I will suffer mass bottleneck but being a little idiot I went ahead anyways. Now I am suffering.

But all is good, I have just got a job, after two weeks I will have Ã‚Â£420 (lol smoke weed errrreday) and I am really going all out this time.
I will keep the GPU of-course, as I haven't seen the real potential yet.

The CPU I hope to upgrade to a i5 4670k, with 8GB 1600mhz RAM and of-course a new motherboard to put this all on (must be able to OC), but can I get better for this amount of cash?

Try steer away from the use of external drives, and if you DO end up with one and want to put it inside your case because you already had an external from your previous computer, just rip it out of its covering and stick it inside your case. It voids the warranty of the hard drive but it doesn't require any extra items to connect to the PC except for a SATA-3 cable.

Don't go off videos showing graphics settings on ultra or high for people using the same components as you. Your computer WILL vary in performance compared to the ones that you see in videos, even if it is a replica build of another computer, including OC settings.

Thanks for the feedback lads, never really thought of getting an SSD, but I guess I will get one for the OS and essentials, thanks again.

when you replace your cpu you will need to put thermal paste on both your cpu socket and on top of your cpu for maximum heat dissipation and to stop your motherboard getting hot

the i5 will come with a heatsink and fan included which is okay for overclocking up to 4.5ghz, but if you want to go higher i reccomend watercooling or a decent fan cooler which can help you overclock up to 5.2ghz. when overclocking i recommend increasing your voltage by 0.75 volts for each 0.1ghz you overclock. i currently have my i5 at 3.75V for a 5.2ghz overclock.

for your thermal paste i recommend the coollaboratory liquid pro, i use it myself. :)

No, he clearly said on the cpu socket, there's no way you could possibly confuse that with the bottom of the heatsink unless you're stupid.

Even then, you only apply the thermal compound to the cpu, not the heatsink.

Exactly. It is applied ONLY to the top surface of the CPU, a small dab and that's it.

Its usually a pea sized bit of paste on the CPU once it is placed into the socket, then obviously once you tighten the CPU Fan onto the motherboard it spreads itself.

Different flavours for different people. You can just place a small amount in the middle of the CPU and let it spread when the cooler is tightened down OR you can spread it evenly across the entire surface.

The deal with spreading it is that you end up with thermal paste on areas that aren't even in contact with the actual cooler when many have a round section which comes in contact with the CPU whilst the CPU itself is square.
