Title: Search option on forum
Post by: FlameMan on November 16, 2014, 02:33:02 pm
Why has the "search" option been disabled?

I guess it's always easier to search for some already discussed matters than starting a new topic each and every time...

As far as I know, search function used to make the forum crash and that is why it has been disabled. I like that function and want it back, too.

This topic has already been posted. The reason for its removal is the fact that it caused problems with the stability of the entire forum, such as "internal server error" messages.

People are currently looking for a solution on how to search the forums. If you have any ideas, you can post them in the forum ideas & suggestions board.

I would tell him to search before posting a duplicate topic next time, but ya... :P

Somewhat this. Something internally with the forum, (be it a corrupted file or a corrupted database section), crashes when the search function is used.

I thought Google ads were for, uh, advertisements? Unless I fell into another universe.

I don't understand why mods are being considered instead of fixing the actual problem. ><

You should be able to search for most things on the forums with google. Go to google and put site:argonathrpg.eu in the search bar, google will search just this domain for whatever you are looking for.

Not Google ads, Google Custom search. This would replace the complete load of the search system with Google's algorithm.

Or get someone who actually understands the scripting basis of SMF, I mean Traser might understand it somehow - but we currently only have webmasters who understand how to change settings on SMF (and how to screw up the whole forums, no offence). That's not really how you gonna run a forum and be prepared to fix scripting issues...

Why would anyone bother learning SMF? It's shit in comparison to other forum we could have used. It's just that this has been in use to long now to be changed :).

It does the job. No big issues, search is a small issue.

No it's not. It is actually a very decent forum software, and is one of the bigger names out there. I've used PHPBB2 and 3 my whole life, and SMF is probably the only other forum software I'd recommend to anyone besides those two. The issue is not the software. It is that the forum has been updated, upgraded, modified, reinstalled, changed, tweaked, hacked, reinstalled some more without first uninstalling modifications, attacked, hacked some more, modified some more, and eventually had its core files, themes, and database essentially corrupted by said actions.

Losing search is not a small issue. Although I agree it is not a big thing to lose, it shouldn't be lost in the first place. The forum should be fixed, regardless of whether the search function comes back or not. I'm sure the webmasters are probably in agreement that these bugs are annoying to deal with, and it comes from years of different people trying to set things up the way they believe is best, or "fix" things for the above reasons.
