Title: Forums: What's broken?
Post by: Teddy on January 01, 2015, 09:29:35 pm
There appears to be a split list of problems with the forums; most of which are observed only by staff so I'll do the responsibility of extending the Q&A out to the forum users to see if we can start eliminating problems.

These need to be technical or visual bugs; not things you don't like and not the obvious (e.g forums being slower than death).

Thanks for your assistance.

Search function.

I'm certain I can fix this; I just need Ronnel or some sort of direct access to do so. However until then we're in the dark.

Isn't this a job for webmasters?

Let us handle the way of operations.

Permissions, me being able to post in other servers unban requests is stupid. Not to mention the bugs I found over the years being able to sticky and lock stuff which I don't have evidence today to back up since I've been removed from those ranks.

Issues like that have been solved, admins are supposed to be able to post in other servers unban requests, yet they should not unless they have that servers leadingships allowance. Not a bug.

I don't see how that is not a bug if they aren't supposed to do it. It doesn't make sense to give users a permission that they aren't allowed to use. That is asking for a security breach.

The system was designed to keep players that is not a moderator or higher from spamming unban requests with unrelevant posts, it was not designed to stop staff members to post in other servers unban requests.

So no, it's not a bug, and it's not asking for a security breach.

He just said other admins aren't supposed to post in other servers' unban requests, which I believe is also a written rule in many of those servers' sections. Why would admins be posting from other servers then? The permissions wouldn't block admins from posting their own topics in other unban requests as players if the permissions are done correctly.

Unless it's needed yes, but if there is a need for it then they are allowed to do so.

"Recent Unread Topics". I would say 65% of the time i click that link, it crashes the forum(atleast it does for me). It takes about 5-7 mins to come back.

I've got the same with opening topics and posting.

The web server it runs on as a whole (as we've discussed a few times). I know this one comes down to the owners though.

I've been meaning to look into it, I've just been really caught up recently. After today however I'll have an exponential amount of extra free-time to look into it.

Activation mail.

Registration question ''What's the abbrevation of SA:MP?'', either a typo or a malformed question.

Activation mail is Gandalf's, nothing we can do about it

Use that for now, nothing I can do about it, up to Gandalf to look in to it. (Don't have a backup of the forums or any rights to directly edit the forum in-case something goes wrong.)

Alright, i've tested this and have got sufficient results.

When visiting your or someone else's profile/stats, about 80-90% of the time, the forum either slows down or crashes(Database connection).

This has been happening to me for quite a while now, i haven't thought of reporting it for various reasons. I'm sure of this issue as i've tested it countless times.

Only Gandalf has the access to fix that. You'd have to ask him.

They may need to check the cookie settings and forum base URL set in the forum's settings. If that doesn't help, it could be the dreaded invalid "subdomain.domain.tld" versus "www.subdomain.domain.tld" redirect causing it to work incorrectly if the webserver isn't set to handle them as aliases of one another. Unfortunately I think only Gandalf has access to fix that, which is an issue on ARFD's subdomain too, (although a different bug arises from it).

Last I heard it was also internally broken. I can give it a shot if you want. :P

It gives an error of a PHP command that is due to not being updated a long time. As the normal update procedure will not work the only possibility is to copy a new install which means any packages need to be re-installed.

I just noticed that error. It is actually different from the one I was describing. If I am remembering correctly, people were previously unable to log in due to PHP sessions immediately timing out when trying to get beyond the login screen. The error that is plaguing the site now appears to be something newer.

As for reinstalling the forum, that is an easy fix. I'm assuming you intend to keep the original database? (Not sure if it is worth trying, but a large upgrade *may* work with fixing the PHP error if the correct files are replaced. It is essentially the next closest thing to a full reinstallation. If that doesn't work, a complete reinstallation is still possible).

Edit: Thinking about the number of different issues that could be leading to the former error, a fresh installation of files is probably indeed the better way to go, as it would take less time to fix both problems at once than play around with the first one after the second is fixed.

Edit #2: The calendar is now broken...
