Title: Wi-Fi no longer working?
Post by: Huntsman on January 09, 2015, 03:59:02 pm
Hi there,

So I earn a little money by fixing ridiculously clueless people their computers. This one friend brought me her laptop this evening, which apperantly no longer connects to the internet. It simply says no connections available. So I thought that perhaps WiFi Drivers are missing, but I don't seem to be able to find one. It's a HP Compaq notebook or something like that, it has Windows 8.1 installed and has a touch screen. Now, the thing is, I've no idea how to reinstall Windows for that thing. It does not show the BIOS menu when restarting and therefore there is no way to boot from DVD, and opening the disk for certain reasons is not an option. I tried downloading some generic HP Windows 8 wifi drivers, but it says that "Everything is installed (Check the logs)" on an instant. No idea how to fix this problem..

I had a similar issue with my desktop PC but it turned out to be a Hardware issue, i ended up getting a new component and it works just fine. I am no PC buff and i could be completely wrong but thats my personal experience with a similar issue.

Maybe it has a switch for Wi-Fi somewhere on the panel or keyboard shortcut?

I was about to say that, few laptops do have touch buttons nearby the Power on one, and other ones have the FN + Fx buttons.. (Ex; my older acer laptop needed FN + F8 to get Wi-Fi started) whilst another lenovo I had, had a switch on the front for it.. Isn't there any Wifi option on the right settings screen? (The one you hover your mouse on right side of sreen to come off..)

Airplane mode could also be enabled or something..

You need to get us the specific model/brand/number so we can help you out mate

If none of that works, you can try to reset the BIOS jumper. This should reset the bios to factory settings and hence, let you enter it if it was disabled by any setting. How to reset the jumper depends on your laptop model so you'll find more information on HP's site about that.

The problem is already fixed. I ran a driver update, which didn't help and neither did any solutions posted here, so I redirected her to a repair service. Apperantly, installing Windows 7 fixed the problem. I wanted to do that, but told her that there's a risk something will go wrong, since new model laptops that come with Windows 8 are sometimes Windows downgrade protected and so on, and she chose to take it to the repair service instead. Still received my 5EUR so Idc :D
