Almost everytime a single more powerful GPU is better than multiple less powerful ones as there any many games that don't scale well with Xfire/SLI

I heard that having crossfire its like 3/4 of the performance of the first card, I have a R9 270x now, but was gonna crossfire it due to the fact my motherboard only supports crossfire, but would it be worth going for the 970? or is there some good AMD's with the same performance even?

Only go Crossfire/SLI when you already got the best of the best due to this.

With a 270x it's not worth it imo.

So keep with R9 270x for time being till I get paid then smash out a 970?

Yes, high end single GPUs beat the low/mid range multi GPUs.
Title: R9 290x or 970?
Post by: Luke on February 05, 2015, 12:48:47 am
Okay, so had a little think, I want to either get R9 290x or 970 GTX

Things to point out..

The R9 290x has the possibility of burning my house down (high run temps/requires shit ton of watts etc)
My motherboard is Crossfire only.
The 970 is brilliant in terms of cooling, and wattage, only issue this 3.5GB issue.

Someone point me in the right direction?

So get the 4GB version of the 970?

I also hope you don't think cooling and wattage make up the performance factors of a GPU.

For some unknown reason there is speculation of the 4GB version of 970 saying that its only using 3.5GB of it.

and ofcourse not, im thinking in terms of heat of my room and the fact my electric bill will die.

Are you in a hurry? Cause you could also wait for the new R9 300 series. It's up to you though.

If you've been "researching" and you're just learning what Linus said; you haven't learned enough about hardware. Not a bad thing, just, do some more digging before you make a choice.

Well, point is, 970 is a great card regardless, I wouldnt be pushing more then 3.5GB on 1080p anyways, and I have no views on upgrading either. So I may just get the 970, a single GPU, while the R9 290x is cheaper, it also will have the possibility of giving me a heart-attack at the end of the month when I check electric bill. Imma go with 970, Nvidia better not disappoint this AMD fanboy.

You can always undervolt it to save money on your electrical bills.

Not worth, when I can get a 970 better performance and at a smaller wattage etc. :/
