Title: Back!
Post by: Gandalf on February 03, 2015, 07:58:49 pm
Sorry for the unexpected lon downtime of the site. The provider of the VPS kept insisting all was fine, even though rarely anything was being displayed.
Any way, all is back up now so we can continue where we left off last week.

He didn't mean it. He asked what about other forums i.e, CIA, ARA and CMB etc. When they're going to get opened?

Tell us the name of the host / provider.

argonathrpg.eu resolves to:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
argonathrpg.eu.         300     IN      A       81.169.205.62

A WHOIS lookup for 81.169.205.62 tells us:

Germany Berlin Strato Ag
h2362279.stratoserver.net

Which tells us the server/VPS is hosted at Strato in Germany.

Which is also none of anyone's concern besides Gandalf's.

Other than all the people who donated and would've thought a decent VPS was chosen.
Quote from: Argonath Club Fundraiser
This is moving our dedicated server to OVH, and creating a separate VPS with their own IP for each game server.

You are talking about a completely different host.

They are bad host.

You do not even know who is hosting the forum at the moment.
The game servers and forums are in different locations on different servers for a reason.

They are sub-domains so they are hosted on the same host with main forum.

Don't pick GoDaddy. It is slow as hell.

No they are not. We can put subdomains on another host as the main site, pretty simple if you know what you are doing.

For those who want to know, this is what we uese:

1. Aleph : US webhosting account.
While unlimited in domains and webspace, it is used for smaller subdomains due to the account not being fit to handle sites with a lot of traffic.
Sites like FBI, ARFD, ARA and clan sites are hosted there. It runs on a linux system at Dreamhost.

2. Beth : Webserver
Currently on a VPS in Germany, it has been there for over a year now so any complaints about the host are not fully true. We have recently upgraded to a larger VPS, and that one has been giving some trouble. For now it is ok, as it has been moved to another machine meaning it operates without problem. Currently the webserver has 8 cores, 16Gb RAM and 800Gb space, we have had dedicated servers with less.
On this one we host the main sites, ARPD and wiki.

3. Gimel : Game server
This one is the one which we recently moved to OVH. Currently it runs a number of VPS servers for our games, and it is getting busy.

4. Daleth : Currently not running, in the past we ran a separate server for Paruni. May come back if finances allow.

Why do we keep these things separate? Simply because if one part goes down, the rest stays up. We had expected a much shorter downtime, else we would have switched the main site to provide updates. In principle Argonath RPG will always stay online in some form.

That's smart, not relying your entire capabilities on one entity.
It's like a 99.99% foolproof space engine, you'll always want exactly another one on standby just in case the 0.01% wins,
and then another just in case that one's 0.01% wins.

I meant when will we be expected when these sites will become online again... But it seems like a host issue that you can't resolve. I'm not good with high tech stuff.
