Title: [HELP]New laptop
Post by: Khm on April 21, 2015, 09:15:03 pm
so.. since my GPU is dying on my laptop I am thinking to buy a new one, cheap and powerful, does anyone have suggestions for such laptop? (less than $2000)
The current specs of my laptop
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
Display Memory: 4048 MB
Dedicated Memory: 2000 MB
Shared Memory: 2047 MB

Something better than those specs if possible (able to at least run GTA V xd)

Do you really need a laptop? (Do you move around, a lot?).

With 2000$, you can get a
A very powerful pc
Or
A powerful pc and an entry level gaming laptop
Or
A powerful gaming laptop with at least  a 970M/i7.

Laptops are generally pretty terrible for gaming. Unless you NEED to be able to carry a PC easily, just build a desktop. If you do need to move it, get a small, easy-to-carry case and get some kind of case to carry your keyboard, mouse and other cables in. That way you get a three piece (monitor, PC, case) setup you can move relatively easily.

Yes I move a lot, specially taking it to school projects that's why I need a laptop.

Would it be a possibility to have PC and laptop both? I have that, taking laptop to school while PC is for working/gaming at home and important stuff synchronized with Dropbox and/or my own server.

You ain't getting laptops with a lot better specs for that price, especially when you plan to play GTAV on it. Either get yourself a second hand one or you'll be spending atleast 3 grand on a new one.

My best recommendation for your laptop choice;
For the GPU - get GTX, NOT just GT.

Skip Lenovo Y50 (especially UHD, there's no point in UHD on a 15.6 inch display and the fact that the 860M can't handle UHD gaming), it's a budget gaming laptop and you can get better than that for less than $2,000.

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8651-clevo-p650se-p-7690.html - I suggest you get this. Get this for the price and use the rest for some games. :D

The 970M is way faster than the 860M (and also 960M which by the way is the rebranded slightly higher clocked GTX 860M)

Cooling performance doesn't look so promising like this one. http://store.asus.com/us/item/201503AM110000029/A23718

I honestly don't see a difference. (Although I am more inclined to believe that Asus ROG has better cooling). Both have equally enough vents for cooling it seems. Still keep in mind that your laptop still will run quite hot when under stress.

My Lenovo Y50 does get pretty hot even when idling (although it's because the day temperature here now exceeds 40*C nowadays............................... .........).
With air conditioner, it cools great even when put under serious stress (Far Cry 4 at ultra, no stuttering and FPS drops =) ).

So yeah, I would seriously recommend gaming at good room temperature (wouldn't be a problem in europe I suppose...)

Play in air conditioned room and also get a cooling pad.

BTW - The XoticPC will give considerably better performance (since it has a 970M).

Still though, air conditioner won't survive staying all day long. So yeah I need a laptop with a good cooling system too.

I am not buying a car.

I would not get a slim laptop like the GL551 that doesn't fit a proper cooling system.

Slimmer laptops will get more hot when under pressure but yeah every laptop will get pretty hot when put under stress, unless it's like a super thick full of vents, but that won't make it portable. (mostly why people don't consider laptops to be great gaming machines, besides the limited power).

Get a cooling pad, a good one.

Ye but my GPU is dying, not because of the stress or bad usage but ever heared of Nvidia 540M Series? :p

That's what I am always putting in mind for laptops.
Get a cooling pad, a good one.
Post one as an example please, because I am thinking of this one which is impossible.

Build a nice desktop for $1,000, and buy an additional laptop for portability.

At that sort of price range I would be looking at some of the high end MSI laptops such as http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GT72-2QD-Dominator-G.html#hero-overview (6GB 970M in a fucking laptop  :app:) . You can get them on ebay for just under $2000. I would never spend that much on a laptop personally though so I haven't done a great amount of research.

Not like you can use the full 6 GB at any time though.

Nevertheless, 970M is a very good GPU for maxed out gaming at 30 fps.

I believe OP needs a laptop that is capable of intense gaming, you can't just simply buy a desktop GPU and run a game on the move.

I can't get anything from eBay though it looks heavy and cooling doesn't seem that promising too unless I didn't read properly. :P

LAPTOP. I can't build a PC for this time and the space I have right now isn't that good for a pc..
