Title: Sad day for Formula 1 fans, RIP Jules Bianchi
Post by: Luke on July 18, 2015, 11:13:34 pm
The family of Jules Bianchi says the French Formula One driver has died from head injuries sustained in a crash at last year’s Japanese Grand Prix.

The news was posted on Bianchi’s official Twitter feed early on Saturday morning French time and later confirmed by the Manor F1 team.

Bianchi, 25, had been in a coma since the accident in October 2014, in which he collided at high speed with a mobile crane which was being used to pick up another crashed car.

The family statement said “Jules fought right to the very end, as he always did, but today his battle came to an end. The pain we feel is immense and indescribable.”

While sad it was not unexpected. Earlier this week the father of Jules Bianchi released a statement that there had effectively been zero progress since the first week after the accident, and that further progress was now not within expectation as in general the first six months are deciding.
Added to that was the remark that Jules Bianchi had mentioned that if an accideent as grave as that of Michael Schumacher ever happened to him he would rather be dead as to have to live without the ability to drive races. Even if this is the comment of a young man with passion for his sport, it made clear that without chance of a recovery to at least a life with some quality, the wish of Jules would be to pull the plug.

The accident in which he was involved was truly a freak incident. The odds if it happening are incredibly high, yet it happened. Jules Bianchi was not fully blameless to crashing out, not only were there double waved yellow flags but the crash of Sutil which brought out the crane happened in his rear view mirror meaning he should have know there was a dangerous spot as well as expect there would be a crane there. However like every driver he trusted his own skills to be good enough to handle the situation.
Track side safety already has improved and will certainly be looked at further. However danger is also a part of the sport. If the impression would be that anyone could race safely in these cars the interest would also fade. Remember that even the driver considered the worst and only present because of a paycheck still has incredible skills and ranks within the 100 best drivers in this world.
Jules Bianchi was destined to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari and losing him meant they need to find another driver with that level of skill and experience. That will be pretty hard as Jules Bianchi was a very big talent that seemed to be able to obtain a rank among the top drivers in Formula 1.
While his body died yesterday, his soul has probably been absent since the day of the accident. RIP Jules Bianchi.
