After literally buying about 12 GTA SA discs over the years (they got lost/damaged) I put GTA SA on a hard drive, after re-installing windows 7 I put it back from the hard drive onto the PC, I'm not sure if it's corrupt somewhere but it's a completely clean copy and I have non-stop opcode crashes, I tried that anti-crash mod but that didn't seem to help and I still kept crashing, now I want to completely erase GTA SA off my PC, but I'd just buy the Steam version which is currently on sale for £2.50, my question is, is the Steam version the same as GTA SA off a disc? As in can I drag it from the Steam directory and install SAMP and whatever else I want in exactly the same way and using it without having Steam on 24/7? Thanks.

I know Argonaths policies on this but... Who the hell buys GTA SA anymore anyways?
-
Yes, it's the same thing.
Only difference is you retrieve the files from the Steam servers on the internet instead of from the disc you insert in the CD drive in your computer.

Someone who wants no hassle.
It's only £2.50 ffs, why risk downloading anything dodgy?

Ok thank you! :)

Only issue that could take place, is that the regular gta_sa.exe coming with the Steam download doesn't support SA-MP. You just have to replace it with an US 1.0 gta_sa.exe patch. If this is the case, I'll be glad to assist you.

Hi, I just bought it too for 2.50,
For me it didn't work (copying all the files and installing SA:MP over it).
The reason I know is, because I tried to install SA:MP on a steam version of SA, but it couldn't find the directory (I went to the steamapps folder, but the install button was still greyed out). Copying all the files to a different folder didn't work either.
How I did it get to work: install MTA 1.5 first, that installer autodetects your steamversion, and than you are able to install SA:MP. The reason is, is that steam uses gta-sa.exe, and SA:MP looks for gta_sa.exe (or the other way arround). The MTA installer adds the gta_sa.exe for you, so you are able to play steam's SP and SA:MP/MTA.
(P.S Seriously, 6 verifications to be able to reply? :| )

You scared me for a second then, just downloading it now, thanks for the offer of help but I'll just drag my current gta_sa.exe from my current buggy opcoded out GTA SA, I doubt it's that which has been causing my problems.

GTA SA on Steam is V3 whereas SA:MP only works with V1. So you will have to patch it down.

Do bear in mind that Steam GTA SA is missing out on alot of files that the disc/pirated copys have. Bought it om sale aswell some year ago and I've only encountered problems with it

What files? Don't tell me that, lol.

There is a lot of base-files removed for some reason that I do not know of. Janar (or it might have been Fuzzy) told me that.
If you buy it, you can try making it work properly with this; http://gtaforums.com/topic/753764-steam-downgrader/
Otherwise I can just pack my game and send it too you :p

Well I've downgraded the steam version to 1.0, installed SA:MP into the directory and it won't run because gta-sa.exe is not gta_sa.exe and I cannot re-name it because then I just get a SAMP crash error... :neutral2:
Noticed it's missing alot of files from the disc version as Emmett said it would be, also I'm not downloading that file Emmett, why does a simple downgrader take 15 mins to download? Another downgrader I used took 10 seconds...
Also one question, will Mod Loader work with the steam version?

Wasn't me, first time I hear about this. :S
Mikal - Modloader does work with Steam version AFAIK.

Because it includes deleted game content (anims, textures and songs (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=928747)) where the other ones only have the exe files.
