Title: IMPORTANT - SA:MP phishing attempts
Post by: Mikro on January 16, 2016, 06:27:23 pm
Currently there is a fake panel login going around. They try to get your password by phishing methods. Do not enter your password anywhere else than in-game or the below panel link.

Example: they send you a link of the fake panel and tell you there was something nice added to the panel. You try to login on their panel and they store your password.

WARNING - ONLY trust https://panel.argonathrpg.nl/

I have experienced alot ages ago with steam fake accounts sending me links to a fake steam community page to make me login, some other ways are when they send you a link, if you click it then they will automaticly recieve all of your steam account information. Great work Development team.

It indeed shows the great work of our team that people are willing to build a phishing portal to breach accounts.
For the developers it is a form of flattery that the server is still desirable enough for banned people to attack.

Really? What would police do ?

authorities doesn't do anything about what happens in the PC world, what happens in the PC world stays in the PC world.

The only people which do something about internet is hollywood and other big movie xompany which fights for their copyright, otherwise no one do anything.

Looks like we need someone to be an example for the others, since the persons/person doing this obviously have no idea about consequences coming from the law.

They were caught and sentenced. Although freed eventually: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jun/02/last-remaining-pirate-bay-founder-freed-from-jail-fredrik-neij

Needless to say, the law definitely has a view of what happens over the net, and take action when necessary: In the case of large and/or important structures being attacked i.e. Paypal or banks in general, government websites and bodies etc.
Despite that they can still consider smaller cases like these, but well... can't say they will immediately sentence one to prison for DDoS ing  a game server sadly.

One question, each country have different LAW about the PC world, so uhm...
This law is from the country these gentlemen live in. There for completely applicable to them.

As for the Prate Bay, as long as what they do is legal in the country the server is hosted, they can not be closed. And there are many countries that allow the storage of material. As long as they do not sell the material only the people downloading could be punished, but the road to actually find and write to a single user is too long and costly at this time.
If certain treaties come in to action which are currently proposed in the USA and the EU, it will be obligatory for providers to save the IP connection data and to provide the contact information for the IP. Then it will become a mere administrative case and fines can be given to the people making an illegal download.

I'd recommend talking to Gandalf about getting the panel moved to a subdomain in Argo, even if it stays on the current host. That way it would make it harder for people to phish users since anything outside of the community's own domain would be an obviously-fake URL.

As for the situation itself, I hope whoever that is doing it gets caught and removed from the community forever. The fact that they would waste their time to damage a community they obviously have interest in is absolutely ridiculous.

It is perfectly fine where it is hosted right now and how it is hosted, I see no advantage to moving the hosting elsewhere and having to set it up.
Right now the main developer of it has full access as one would require and is more than capable of hosting it by himself.

I'm not saying moving the host. I'm saying pointing the DNS to his own server where it is already at so users are connecting via an Argonath domain-based URL, and not an off-site one. Nothing needs to be moved for that to happen.

If people weren't ignorant enough to click on a link from a stranger they met online none of this would have happened. There is a panel link at the bottom of the forum that is there for people to use.

There is no need to move or change anything about the panel hosting or domain. The link used for phishing was not even similar to the panel link at all.

Changing the domain from .nl to .eu won't solve anything. In my opinion it was a pretty obvious attempt and people still fell for it. You can't prevent stupidity by changing a domain.
