Title: A tutorial for new players
Post by: Vitorrio on April 26, 2016, 10:04:11 am
Did you know that GTA IV Online has/had a tutorial on Happiness Island for new players to accommodate with the game's mechanics? Are you annoyed by new players everyday? When was the last time you have seen a new player carjacking only because he was used to GTA IV's passenger mechanics? How come they didn't know to roleplay? How many hours of sadness and anger have new players created before they learned? Like a week, or three, maybe? Not to worry, that is why there should be a tutorial of the server at the beginning of a newcomer's first ever game. It shouldn't be much, but it needs to be a scripted tutorial. Like, it should explain to the player why to Roleplay and how (only basics) to RP properly, as well, not to ruin a Roleplay in motion. Of course, the tutorial would explain them to press "G" when they want to be a passenger. It has been proven so many times that after a human reads a tutorial or a set of rules of a game/board game/studying course, he/she will get the idea better compared to a person trying to explain to a fellow who hasn't read them.
P.S: Don't bother to add some new ideas and stuff you would think would work with this tutorial.  ;) :depature:

What will the language be?

It would be in English, first of all. But maybe it will be developed in more languages, like Turkish, Egyptian, French, German etc.

Most new players we receive on the server are from Russia / Balkan countries. Not al young players understands English so it will be very hard to explain them they are in a tutorial. And maybe multiple players in one spot may cause crashes and even more rulebreak.

Maybe, that is why we discuss the idea. I know many people are from Balkan States, just like my birth country, but, we could use some translators (people, in extreme cases Google) and maybe identify the PC's/laptop's language/languages/location. Well, maybe they shouldn't be put in just one location, maybe in more. I think Nicole/Ninda/Kerbe/Bass should discuss this topic, as well.

Well there are language setting on single player...
why not get those languages and place it on the script therefore allowing them to change languages whenever they like?

That's not how it works.
The scripters would have to rewrite all dialogue for every language.

I think this is unnecessary. Admins and even helpful regular players are always available to help guide new players to role-play. They basically have a tutorial already- just that it's not scripted and forced upon them. IF we'd have a scripted tutorial that is based on their native language, they'd obviously choose to role-play in that language, right? What would be the point of it when they're unable to role-play with others who do not understand their native language? Which is why we encourage such players to use Google Translate to not only understand English, but to also speak English so they are able to interact with others. It is only logical as the majority uses English- after all, it is an international server.

Yeah. That would be so, but, still, even if we explain to them, some of them just won't cooperate. But yeah, it might be a point. But, it might be necessary in extreme cases. And a sentence telling them to Roleplay in English wouldn't be that bad.

in my point of view i see that its useless to make a" tutorial of the server at the beginning" as it will disturb new players to find joining the server is too hard, complicated.
it will end up with their leave.

If you still don't want it, then don't be that COLD to the newcomers if you still don't want people to leave. And put some roleplay suggestions in the /help if you really want people to really Roleplay! Ugh!

We are not a hard core RP server, we are a light RP, free roam server, we never did nor will set RP as a must, players are encourage to RP if they wish to do that, if not going around doing scripted mission and driving is also a option.

Its pretty simple those who wish to RP will learn to RP if they wish so, if not they wont learn no matter how much you clutter them with suggestions on RP.

Also /help isn't meant for suggestions its meant to assist new players with commands to enable them to learn all they wish about the server.

Oh. Well, you know, it still takes very long for really dedicated players to teach newcomers how to act (two days ago I helped for a couple of hours a player, who is called [ionut112], but, I don't know if it was really worth it. I conviced him to drop Caps Lock and not to shoot people, to use /l, /pm, and /me).
