The Sumiyoshi-kai (住吉会), sometimes referred to as the Sumiyoshi-rengo (住吉連合 Sumiyoshi-rengō, "Sumiyoshi Union"), is the second-largest yakuza group in Japan with an estimated 20,000 members. Their territories mainly consist of upscale districts such as Kabukichō and Ginza. Shops operating in these territories are often part of protection rackets in which they must pay a fee called a mikajime-ryou (みかじめ料). The Sumiyoshi-kai is a confederation of smaller gangs. Its current sosai, or president, is Shigeo Nishiguchi. Structurally, the Sumiyoshi-kai differs from its main rival, the Yamaguchi-gumi. The Sumiyoshi-kai, as a federation, has a looser chain of command and although Nishiguchi is still the supreme Godfather, he shares some powers with several other men. The group has a complex history, with numerous name changes along the way. It was founded in 1958 as the Minato-kai (港会) by Shigesaku Abe who was the 3rd sōchō (総長, "Supreme Leader") of the Sumiyoshi-ikka. Yoshimitsu Sekigami who is 4th socho of Sumiyoshi-ikka renamed it to Sumiyoshi-kai. It was received the control of power, and dissolved in 1965.
 
Los Santos, San Andreas
The current leader of Sumiyoshi-kai, Shigeo Nishiguchi came to San Andreas after getting a mail from Akihiro Hiroyuki (Imam Rasyid, was given a Japanase name by Shigeo Nishiguchi). Akiharo Hiroyuki and Shigeo Nishiguchi have known each other for ten years, when Akihiro Hiroyuki stayed at Tokyo for five months. They did alot of illegal and dangerous things in Tokyo, such as drug trafficking, grand theft, weapon smuggling, and more. Shigeo Nishiguchi came to San Andreas as a response of the mail. Akiharo Hiroyuki took Shigeo Nishiguchi and introduced to him, about San Andreas and some of his friends; Matteo, Vincent, and Rey. Shigeo Nishiguchi was interested after the introduction, he decided to build up Sumiyoshi-kai in Ocean Docks, Los Santos. After eight months of building Sumiyoshi-kai with Akihiro Hiroyuki and friends, Shigeo Nishiguchi got a call from Tokyo that Sumiyoshi-kai's properties are in danger nowadays, an unknown group burnt down some of their properties. Shigeo Nishiguchi gave Akiharo Hiroyuki a Katana called as, Sumi's Blade. Which is the second Katana made by the founder of Sumiyoshi-kai, Matsugoro Ito. The Katana was given because he wants people to know Sumiyoshi-kai is building up in Santos. Shigeo Nishiguchi left San Andreas with Santos' Sumiyoshi in Akihiro's and his friends' hands.
