Title: Can I switch my Integrated Intel HD Graphics card?
Post by: Hammer_ on July 20, 2018, 06:51:45 am
Hello, I've a Intel HD 3000, and I'm looking forward to upgrade it, and luckily I found this on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Alienware-GTX-660M-N13E-GE-A2-Replacement/dp/B07BB1B1PX/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1532050815&sr=1-1&keywords=GTX+660), now I don't know if I can replace it or no, so I'm consulting you guys before I actually buy it.

You can't really replace an Integrated Intel HD "graphics card". It's not a graphics card... By integrated it means the graphics are processed by your Intel CPU. Unless your laptop has an MXM slot, you can't upgrade the graphics with that, and most laptops don't have it. You will typically only find those in certain gaming laptops. Even if your laptop does have an MXM slot, there's no guarantee that card will work because its meant as a replacement part for an Alienware gaming laptop.
See: http://www.notebookreview.com/howto/how-to-upgrade-nvidia-mxm-notebook-graphics-cards/

If you're dead set on upgrading your graphics on your laptop, your only option is to use a thunderbolt external GPU enclosure such as this - https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Thunderbolt-External-Graphics-Enclosure/dp/B0791ZCH4Q

But considering the price tag of that PLUS a desktop graphics card - I'd invest such money in a gaming desktop computer.

I’d rather buy a new laptop.

It's very rare that you can upgrade a laptops graphics card.

It'll need to be a card that the laptop had as an original option as part of the model line, may well need additional cooling vents, and there's no guarantee that your particular version came with a BIOS with integrated GPU support anyway.

Save yourself the problem and get a new laptop.

I don't think there might be any way to replace IGPUs but however if your laptop has an HDMI Input, you're maybe in luck still by buying an external GPU stander (or w/e it's called) or somewhat made for using GPUs externally and buying a desktop GPU.

I have a thunderbolt, yes. I can use EGPU, but mannn, it's too much work.

External GPUs are not really worth it if you look at price / performance since you typically loose 10-15% of the full power of the GPU since thunderbolt can only handle a certain amount of data. Most of them even requiers you to buy a GPU aswell which thends to get a bit pricy, like the Razer Core (then ofcourse there is shady ebaystands that one can use but they mostly use the m2slot that has the wificard in it and it also requiers the laptop to be have the back/front open if you don’t make a hole in the side, like this one (https://m.ebay.com/itm/V8-0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-Mini-PCI-E-/371789891934?ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-164882-2056-1%2F2%3FPARM3_ID%3DGBH_192%26FF11%3DGBH_192%26kw%3DW2iRkQAABKlbtT33%3A20180806182105%3As%257CEAIaIQobChMI_ZnttYXZ3AIVmqiaCh0YhA-5EAQYASABEgJ_jfD_BwE%26mpre%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FV8-0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-Mini-PCI-E-%2F371789891934%26rule%3D%26crlp%3D215917280097%26adpos%3D1o1%26device%3Dm%26cmpgn%3D910896432%26ef_id%3DW2iRkQAABKlbtT33%3A20180806182105%3As%26srcrot%3D711-164882-2056-1%26rvr_id%3D1623105953030%26rvr_ts%3D1078a3bc1650aaa2a507517afff4e712&_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1) + you need a PSU)

There's no point on doing that, why convert a laptop to desktop? Either buy a newer laptop or sell it and save to build a desktop..

No.

Saving for a better laptop with proper graphics card is far more of a logical step. External GPU's are a hassle I heard.
