V:MP Roleplay Guide 1 - Written by Mark
Introduction
Hello! We have prepared this guide for newplayers and community veterans to take few tips before playing in deep in our server. This guide will basically talk about your character and how can you create, build, and develop it. Before reading this guide, we ask you to have a good look at the V:MP Server Rules. (https://www.argonathrpg.eu/index.php?topic=129566.0) Your first step in-game (after reading further about game tutorial and commands) are to decide what character do you wish to roleplay as? How does this character looks like? How you should react in daily situations? And more questions to ask yourself which will be explained further in this document.
Note; this guide is especially important for veterans as well to understand what they have to do to adapt with the new RP environment in the server.
Ingame character
We have quoted the most important rule section that's related to this guide. This is what we will be giving more tips about. Make sure you read the quote very well.
In-character:
- 9. In-character means you are carrying out actions and behaviors of the character that you are roleplaying with in-game. It's the character persona that you choose to roleplay in the server
- 10. You can have more than one character
- 11. You should consider for each character roleplaying their feelings, concerns, personality, acquired knowledge, and traits
- 12. This character is not you - the person behind the screen and keyboard
- 13. Types of chat used: /l, /w, /s, /em, /me, /cb and ingame voice chat
Character's name
The first thing comes to your mind when you decide to create your character is the name. What name would you like to use for your character? Your name should be in this exact form: FirstName_SecondName.
Few tips...
- It's not recommended to use your real life name, however if you are sure about it and don't mind revealing your name then go for it! Make sure you stick to the general form as mentioned above.
- It's not recommended to use real life famous names, actors, presidents, religion characters, or whatever of those lines. Those names may be sensitive for some other players, so it's preferable to stay away from picking any of those names.
- Never use symbols or numbers in your name. Symbols such as !@#$%^...etc don't make sense in a name. (Exception for clan tags)
Character's age and physical traits
Your character's age is not your real life age, let's start here. It is a common mistake, if you wish to roleplay a 12 years old kid you should know it's almost impossible for a kid that age to be able to shoot, drive and escape the police without consequences. Roleplaying yourself inside the game is not suitable either, you're here because you want to roleplay somebody else and do things that IRL you would probably avoid. You should be wise when deciding the age of your character, a 80 years old probably would probably struggle in running very fast. Be wise, pick an age and stick to it, build the rest of your details around it, for example clothing and vehicles style.
Sometimes you have to be precise regarding your character's details. An example would be when the police arrests you and processes your info in the database (fictional or not, you still have to be realistic in-character), they'll start asking your height and so on. Now, a very tall and muscular man surely can't suddenly be described as a 1.60m skinny human, so make sure you describe your skin as realistic possible, if you wish to change it you are free to but when approached you should be true to the skin/clothes you're currently using.
Regarding this particular point, it's alright if you wish to describe different clothes that for in-game limitations cannot be shown, as long you inform the other player of it in /em, your creativity will be accepted!
Character's backstory and personality
Whenever you create a new character you should start thinking on what you want this character to be. Do you want him to be a depressed business man in the search of happiness? Are you building a psychopath? There is literally infinite choices and it's always up to you and your creativity!
Why does this matter in roleplay?
There are multiple uses for it, an example is when applying for government or player factions, you'll be asked to write a background story of your character, it is really important that you give thought into it, write a story as reference for yourself on how to act in a scenario. This story will be also a reference point for the faction you're joining on how to approach you in-character and it will smooth out your interactions at the beginning as you learn new faces.
This is a quick backstory and personality example
(https://i.postimg.cc/YCn0RSHd/download.jpg)
- You are a young 18 years old gangster who lived in the hood his whole life and has been dealing with weapons and drugs. You're part of a gang of 5 and you're loyal to them. Keep in mind this, your loyalty. It's a routine day for your character, dealing drugs is your daily bread, however this time things go wrong, the police organizes a buy-bust operation and the guy you sold the drugs to, turns out to be an undercover cop.
Few moments later you end up in jail, remember, your character's backstory has loyalty as personality trait, as a young loyal gangster you decide not to rat on your gang, the cops will try multiple times to persuade you but you won't let them down. Choosing this path will lead to a full jail sentence and charges pressed on you will mark your character story, you can use this information in the future when approached by other players and even brag about it with other gang members, enforcing that hood attitude you should portray when roleplaying a gangster.
In conclusion, this is just an example of one of the traits you can build your character on, and it is very important that you make use of it, it's important to be realistic with your actions after choosing certain paths, you'll have plenty of enjoyment from it and give fun back to those interacting with you as well.
Character's Fear is also part of your personality
This is a delicate argument to touch, some people like to be bulletproof or sponges that can survive five armed men or ignore multiple patrol units while being on foot chasing their character down the streets. It's alright to resist but when roleplaying you should remember it also important not to ruin other players enjoyment, avoiding fear roleplay can be really annoying for the other side and it is a rulebreak. I'll try to be very brief and simple on the definition: As humans we have emotions and fears, we all experienced one in our lives. Being realistically in-game means also playing with these emotions, when the character's story above was created we didn't mention the fears of my character but that doesn't mean it doesn't prove feelings at all, my character is not a robot.
Some examples:
- I'm 18 years old, most of my life consists of drug dealing because that's what I grew up into. My biggest fear can be the police, ready to arrest me in any occasion, it can be a rival gang who is not afraid to shoot me or kill one of our group. It can be anything, even your parents.
These are inner fears, they're all inside your character's mind but that doesn't mean you have to ignore them, use them to describe your character's feelings in /em or when speaking to other players locally In Character.
What if a real threat came from another player or group ?
- I'm alone, walking up the street and a van suddenly gets close, four men get out and intimidate, they withdraw their weapons or use force to grab and kidnap me, i have limited choices because I'm outnumbered and nobody is around to help me, what do i do ?
You decide to comply and accept your character is in a moment of fear and has to take a delicate decision. (Running away can be a choice if you think you can get immediate help from someone else nearby but don't push it too far, adrenaline is not infinite)
During this situation the men would do anything to steal information about my gang, remember you're still a loyal member, but your loyalty can be cracked if they're smart enough about it, what do i do ? I have no choice but give them what they want if i want to remain alive. This could be seen as a "pussy" act by some people but in reality this is a realistic portray of a character, we can be trained to resist to interrogations but not as much we think or some movies make us believe.
Naturally, when you are in a group of people you will feel invincible as long as you remain close to them. However if you are intimidated by another gang, it is recommended that you don’t try to pull off a Rambo, it's not just unrealistic but also an easy way to ruin someone else experience on the server.
and finally...Be creative!
