Title: [WEB] Bug log + temporary solutions.
Post by: Brian on March 23, 2021, 08:09:27 pm
Hello, as we are still using SMF in the year 2021 and more bugs are appearing left and right due to outdated packages or incorrect software being used, lots of things have to be manually adjusted in order to work correctly. This topic will be a log of these issues, as well temporary fixes until we can resolve said issues.
feel free to reply to this topic with bugs or issues you experience on the forums, we'll do our best to add them to our backlog and work on resolving them.

Current:

Bug: Unable to use quick quote feature, never ending loading when attempting.
Temporary solution: Click and drag the quote button in to your URL bar, press enter. It'll quote the message in a new reply window. Alternatively, and possibly easier is to middle-mouse click on the quote button, this will open the quote window in a new tab.
Eta to fix: Unknown, no error log is provided when using the quote feature, we'll have to manually research what is causing this.
Update: May 2nd - Problem is caused by issues on the server side, we're working on resolving this hopefully in the upcoming days.

Bug: Unable to use the "insert quote" feature when replying to a post.
Temporary solution: Same as the previous solution, open it in a new tab, then either use that window or copy and paste the quoted message in to your current reply.
Eta to fix: Unknown, no error log is provided when using the quote feature, we'll have to manually research what is causing this.
Update: May 2nd - Problem is caused by issues on the server side, we're working on resolving this hopefully in the upcoming days.

!!Optional: Disable the quick reply feature in your profile layout settings and quoting will work fine.

Fixed issues:

Bug: Profile features were not working.
Solution: Upon updating to 2.0.18 one of our long term packages was corrupted. We altered some code, and then reinstalled the package, this resolved the issue.

Brian, long-term, are there any plans on migrating over from SMF to something better?

IIRC this is not possible without owner's blessings so...

This has been something we have considered but the owners were not the biggest fan of it, they were planning to change to a software that's very different from your usual forum software, which would also change the whole atmosphere, but with their disappearance I doubt that'll be happening anymore.

Wdoyle has offered up a license to Vbulletin but as Chase said it's something we can't really do without the okay from the owners and with our past disagreements on offers and forum changes I doubt they'd like to switch to something they do not own themselves.

Edit: To add on to this, most of the forums (including databases) are severely degraded and run on database software that's often years old, we've attempted ports to different (unpaid) software in the past and almost all results were either errors or invalid integrations (the information that was transferred was either corrupted or there partially (mostly just the informative data like post amounts, user amounts, or user names))
While we could probably get a full port done, we'll most likely still lose a fair amount of data (things like posts linked to users, or even user accounts). One of the other issues we have is that we have a lot of different forums, we could port all of our forums to one main domain and split it up there (which was the plan for the vbulletin domain) but again that'd result in partial loss of data, and we'll most likely be able to obtain the topics/ posts, but they'd no longer be linked to users.

just restart the VM

We do not have access to virtual machine that the forums currently operate on, if we did a lot of the issues we were having would not be happening as we'd just be able to switch to alternative PHP options that'd solve a majority of our issues.

Same.
I do believe because they got deleted with the deleted topics aswell.
Dunno if that causes such problems even.

Hi sorry for the delay, are you two talking about the show posts feature on the forums?
If this is the case, what is the exact issue you are getting, an error, page not loading, other problem?

Also, I am aware of the annoying lag that's been going around on the forums lately, it is also the cause of the quote feature and several other features not working, we're actively at work on resolving it and have made a groundbreaking progress today, more to come in the next few days hopefully.

We were not able to view the old posts of ourselves through the "Show posts".
I tried it now and it works as of now.

There seems to also be a bug where you cannot set gif links anymore. It defaults back to the previously saved state. If you had a working gif before, it will disappear when you change your forum profile (don't ask how I know).
