Title: Bitrate and connection>>changed to Dj's general Discussion
Post by: Prometheus[NL] on April 02, 2008, 06:35:44 pm
I have noticed some of our Dj's are broadcasting in really low bitrates, now there is nothing wrong with that if you have a slow connection but for the guys that may have a better one please post your connection speed here and ill tell you what you can pull off

let me give mine as example I have (its the upload that is the factor here)

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/254219313.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

With this I can pull off 128 bps mp3 and be ingame so people with this or more should atleast be able to transmit 96bps mp3 easily

It just sounds better for music, for only speech its not that big of an issue but music needs to sound clear

but its up to you just a tip

EDIT: seeing as this has become the DJs general discussion corner(we all talk about everything ) ill change it to that it seems there was a need for it

I will upload at no more than 48kb/s. Good enough quality, remember this is not a pro radio station. ;)

It seems good, maybe I will apply for DJ next time  :D

around 40kb/ps is good enough, we have LISTENERS with bad connections and major lag problems, it buffers for them if we go higher than 58kb/ps, as Watti will be able to backup.

I wonder why that is that some isp's make the upload so low ..probably so you take more expensive contract if you need to upload a lot I saw a few eastern european guys tests .they actually had nmore upload then download

Oh btw Zun I caught a few of your shows Good work ! keep it up  ;)

/me backs Up :D

ok now... i got it on .. i do belive... ahh... 64 Kb/s... :D.. Which is 64 Bytes per second... thus 6.4 KB/s

i can listen to 128 fine.. out game but 64 is max ingame

around 40kb/ps is good enough,
[...]
.. i do belive... ahh... 64 Kb/s... :D.. Which is 64 Bytes per second... thus 6.4 KB/s
[...]

b (small b) = bit, 1/8 of a byte
B (big b) = byte

ex. 1Mb/s = 128kB/s
     32kB/s = 256kb/s

and another thing, use a 'p' OR a '/', don't use both at the same time (@ Dave)

And about the bitrate, 64 is enough for a radio. 48 and lower are good only if you can compress the data with a good algorythm.

you are telling me you dont hear difference between 128 and 64 or you dont mind it ?

I just made this topic for people who want more but though they could not get it not to tell you guys what to use thats up to you

but if I am not wrong Johannes uses 92 or something like that and nobody ever complained about it (atleast not on forum)

hmm it does increase my latency perhaps i shall try lower also

I think most of us encode at around 40kb/s which is good enough for an ameteur radio station.

Hmm I am a perfectionist when it comes to music SRY

thats why I am getting crazy I am playing now and i keep hearing distortion even on 128 .. like i am in the red . but I am not

Great show so far Iggy and it sounds perfect ;) i play mine at around 64-128kb/s depending if alot of people are buffering quite alot i'll put it down.

yeah wel if i dont scare you all away with my Metal lol i like a lot of music so its not to hard for me to play something different

you are telling me you dont hear difference between 128 and 64 or you dont mind it ?

I mean that it depends on the compression algorithm... sometimes music is good in 48kB/s and sometimes it can break ears at 128kB/s.
But for an internet radio, 64kB/s is usually enough for me. Of course, higher is good too.

My Radio Station - 48kb/s Stereo
Argonath Government Radio -  32kb/s Mono

It's only temporary for when I get a new connection in the future because at the moment my connection varies in upload speeds and download speeds so I am going to get ye old mother to have a look at getting a new ISP.

Any suggestions from people in the UK? I am thinking Virgin Media.

Roadkill, am using Virgin Media there quite good except the Cable Modems they give you are Crap (Mine Broke within 2 Months).  Get the 20MB Package though it costs only £10 a Month for 3 Months if you get Virgin Phone aswell overall good ISP.

To Iggy Or Giac -

TupacSforza, said he doesn't want to Be a DJ Anymore due to the fact he has Problems and doesn't have any interest anymore, I told him to tell you guys about it but i guess he didn't so am just letting you know.  So i think you should consider Accepting one of the other people who posted an App but didn't make It.

Those using SAM, please send me a PM if you're hearing yourself back.

It's a problem with SAM not knowing where you want the sound to go to once it's been captured...

I have this problem also with other software always fix it though (and forget how )

but why dont you make a little tutorial for  SAM (if youd like) so Giac can sticky it for future Dj's

Dont use PM for info that might benefit more people share it out  :D
