Title: Temp server
Post by: Aragorn on January 27, 2007, 11:23:03 pm
while there is a negotiation and discussing about running servers, the temp server will be passworded at the night time...

Password: sauron

use it only for regular players...

Guys do not give out the password to people that we do not know. Server is without protection against crashers, so if the wrong guys get the password you will be without scripts fighting flamers and crashers.

I have been busy with Sauron today regarding the main server... you don't want to know Saurons comments.

If you and Gandalf are obviously on a network.
Why not run the server from your home under a dedicated account.
Its quite easy I have done it before.

hem... welll

i can answer this...

the reason we dont use a "home server" is because Home servers can become unstable and lag when over 10-20 people are on .. expeccially for australians

We have got Resorces to a Dedicated server (50 times better) then a home server.. and a gaqme server can hold both  VC and SA :)

Why not a home server ? Well our current server still is better than any home server, all were playing on it for 6 months  ;)
The only problem we have with this server is that we can not install the firewall protection that we want to stop crashers.

For the techies:
The hardware of a home server i more than enough to host an MTA server, even if it is hard on the processor and disk. But then there are the problems. If you have a standard home internet connection your upload speed will be 256 or 512 kbps.
I am not talking about the download, download speed can be a lot higher. For instance I am on a high level connection and have 12000kbps download but just 2048kbps upload speed.
For MTA the download speed does not matter, as the serer has to send data to all players. An upload speed of 2048kbps is 2Mbit.
A server in a datacenter has a 10Mbit connection, so 50x faster than a fast home connection and 400 times fater than a regular internet connection.
And then there is the fact that in the evening urban areas use a lot more internet. ISP connections for home use are overbooked like 1:100. Your speed at daytime is a lot different from the primetime speed, so the top speed is probably unreachable.
The power of the server, the memory, the disk speed and the network connection all contribute to a server lagg. The only way to keep this stable is by using prime hardware set in a protected environment with stable connection speeds.
The current servers are at a good location with good service. But they do not offer or have the possibility to use a firewall with rules to block IPs.
The French server had a better performance and had the possibility to set this firewall. Unfortunately the company was not good.
Sauron has found a new location for the server, and hopefully this will be stable on traffic and service.

Home server? I have something to say:
If you will have a home server, you will have to have
the PC turned on, right? That's the problem if the connection time is cashed...

Why not a home server ? Well our current server still is better than any home server, all were playing on it for 6 months  ;)
