Title: ~ VATSIM ~ Do any Argonath users fly VATSIM???
Post by: Roadkill on September 04, 2008, 04:47:46 am

Hey, some of you may or may not know that I do not play on the Argonath RPG servers anymore, I just run Argonath Government Radio. Before I joined Argonath back in 2006 I used to be a flight simulation enthusiast but I lost interest. I've had FS2004 since it came out and the game is not realistic enough in terms of air traffic and ATC communications, FSX is even worse. I decided to download VATSIM (Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network), VATSIM is basically a virtual world where professional/non-professional pilots or ATC operators can join and create their own realistic communications and operations, the reason VATSIM is so realistic is because no noobs are allowed to sign up. If you wish to use VATSIM I suggest you do your homework and gain some flight experience.

If there are any Argonath users that have VATSIM then please post your call-sign or your pilot name. If you do not have VATSIM then I highly recommend you download it at http://www.vatsim.net/ (http://www.vatsim.net/).

My call-sign is BAW0569 (http://www.vataware.com/pilot.cfm?cid=1074652) I just joined yesterday so I do not have many recorded flights.
In VATSIM I fly a BAW B777 just like the one below.

This is what I call SERIOUS roleplay...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0Aphjw5TP0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17nwS2jxqwM

If you are not interested in VATSIM then hopefully this topic will at least inspire you to be a better roleplayer in Argonath.

Looks pretty cool, I'll try it when I'm back home.

Sorry, but if you don't have any earlier aviation experience it's just not gonna be as simple as "Oh, well I'll give it a try". In the skies of VATSIM you really need to know what to do, which means you are required to spend time on studying all the procedures and methods to be used. The same procedures are used in real aviation so maybe that gives you some image of the challenge you have infront of you.

Anyway, if you still are interested in testing it out after all this scary text, please be my guest! ;)

:ps: I do not fly in VATSIM regularly at the moment, but whenever I do, I prerfer using a high quality and super realistic add-on aircraft, such as the Level-D 767 (http://www.leveldsim.com (http://www.leveldsim.com)). I keep changing my callsign depending on the flight/operator, so I don't have a regular one.

This isn't a goofy add on like SA:MP, VC:MP, MTA...etc this is an absolutely stable add on for an absolutely stable game. The game will not crash, your computer may crash if it is terrible but I have never crashed/lagged using VATSIM or even heard of people crashing.

Study hard at http://www.vatsim.net/prc/ and have a good first flight.

Though I think he ment crashing as in hitting the ground blowing up and killing 200 people on-board

Well being able to fly properly comes with experience and experience isn't something hard to achieve.

Just to clarify, VATSIM itself is not anykind of software but a massive community and network. However, you can use different kind of piece of software to get connected to the VATSIM network.

For pilots:
- SquawkBox (http://www.squawkbox.ca/) (for FS2002/FS2004/FSX)
- FSInn (http://www.mcdu.com/) (for FS2002/FS2004/FSX)
- XSquawkBox (http://www.xsquawkbox.net/) (for X-Plane)

For Air Traffic Controllers:
- ASRC (http://www.asrc.info/)
- VRC (http://www.metacraft.com/vrc/)
- EuroScope (http://www.euroscope.hu/)

Please note that you don't need any flight simulator software to work as an air traffic controller. ;)

Is there a way to spectate other pilots to gain knowledge?

Certainly there is. You can connect to the VATSIM network as an observer and listen to the the air traffic communication while having a radar scope view in front of you.

Here are some guides which I found out quickly with Google:
- Observer's guide for ASRC (http://www.compulink.co.uk/~smctighe/getting_started/asrc_obsguide.html)
- Observer's guide for VRC (http://www.metacraft.com/VRC/docs/VRC%20Observers%20guide.pdf)

It's maybe possible to observe with EuroScope too, but didn't find a guide for it. I've personally used only ASRC.

Ok, thanks Kaltsu. I don't even have FS though, so I may need to go out and buy it.

I've had a browse around the website and checked out the "Visual Display". The sim looks quite impressive and realistic, but it also looks like there's a great amount of experience required...

EDIT: I don't suppose living in Australia will have any advantages, connection/delay wise either

I have gained quite a big in flight hours now. I have only gained my knowledge by reading the manuals alot.
I personally prefer the bombadaiar learjet, Alot easier to get into heathrow and into the parking alot more nippier than the PMDG Boeing i got.

Guys, you seriously need to get vroute.info also, It helps alot listen to the radio while flying while making planning routes alot faster

As I said, you do not need FS for observing or if you want to concentrate on ATC work only. The pilot role naturally requires a flight simulator.

VATSIM consists of networked servers all around the world so you can just use the server which is the closest one to you.
You can check out the VATSIM server list HERE (http://data.vatsim.net/display/default.html?show=3&filter=). ;)

You guys should get out and do it for real :devroll:
And how do you know if we already are? :devroll:

Never in my life have I heard of someone killing someone after telling them that they are a pilot.

Well I won't be flying for a while because I'm decorating my room. :(

But when I do maybe we can organize an Argonath group flight. Looks like just me and Kaltsu at the moment. :poke:

I think Flight Simulator X is nice but it's also quite heavy. So in case you have a good computer I would definitely recommend Flight Simulator X. ;)

Well, the only problem is FS X requires DVD-ROM and the computer I was planning to run it on only is CD-ROM. And the other computer (with DVD) is only 40gb capacity which is already full...

So is it still possible to fly together with different versions?

Yeah, you can use Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002/2004/X or X-Plane to fly in VATSIM.

My advice is 2004, more add-ons is avalible and less problems with the CPU.

Yeah get FS2004, FS2004 is what I recommend, I believe that it's slightly more realistic than FSX. Great scenery and aircraft add-ons available and FS2004 is best for performance so you will get better FPS and a good frame rate is essential for any flight simulator. However saying that, I probably will soon purchase a gaming PC and install FSX onto that as soon as more add-ons become avaliable for FSX.

Thanks, my sig was just a quick thing because it was like 4AM, it is a bit fast so I need to sort that out straight away once I have finished decorating my room that is.

It's not really a game, it is a simulator. You won't be instantly good at anything... You need to play on the simulator and gain experience. Never say never...
