Ok, my vista (64 bit) is freezing sometimes. This means you cannot do anything. The computer still sounds like it's on, but mouse, keyboard and everything else doesnt work. (frozen.) Only thing that helps is restarting the computer.
I have looked on google, and some say to look at CPU and RAM if something is stressing it out. Well It is not. My CPU does not come above 50% and ram not above 40%, so that cannot be the problem.
Ok, before the freezing I had other problems:
-shutting down the computer didnt work sometimes (forever black screen)
-Starting computer sometimes doesnt work ( 1 of the 3 times, stuck before round vista icon )
I do not know if I had the problems stated above while my computer was overclocked, or when I stopped overclocking it. I only know that I decided to stop overclocking it after I got a BSOD when vista was loading. I did change the FSB somewhere near the standard, and then changed the option to auto (currently standard) so the BIOS will decide. (using default MHZ of the CPU)
Can someone help me?

I had this problem before the best solution would be open your pc and clean out the dust. This helped me alot and actually I sended it to Bestbuy and got it done for 24$. Good Luck
-
So it is the dust!
My computer does look a bit dusty! ill clean it out
EDIT:
Done! now im giving it a week... if Ifreeze ts not the dust! My computer doesl ook shiny again!
-
I had this problem before.. Then it fixed and everything works fine now. Dont know how
-
My computer froze a hour ago... So the evil dust did not take over my computer...
I will wait a month, and if I still have the problem, ill delete everything from my computer an start over... *sigh*
Anyone got an idea what might solve it? (if it isnt just waiting)
EDIT:
My computer froze just when I started windows media player... coincidence? I dont know... I want to remove it to test it... But how do I remove it?

How about switching to XP. Vista tends to cause problems and it's still in the "bugged" Stage! Anyways Tell me your Spectification fo your pc so I have an idea at what I am looking at. Thanks

You are looking at a:
OS: Vista 64 bit
Motherboard: Asus P5n-T Deluxe
Ram: 4x2 = 8GB ram
Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4Ghz (Cooler master fan on it, around 30 - 40 centigrade degrees, 45-50 when full power)
Video Card: Asus 9800gtx+
800 Watt ... Forgot the name though
http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/files/detail/Thermaltake_shark_black.jpg (http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/files/detail/Thermaltake_shark_black.jpg) ... And thats the case, so it has enough cooling I think
Well switching to another OS is not a good answer... XP wont let me handle 8GB anyway. :)

Wow thats a powerful PC and I don't really know why this is happening to you..
-
Yeah, it cant be the specifications...
It might be a program, or I just have to wait for a windows update...

I don't know but add me on [email protected] I am gonna do some research about this. Thanks
-
Do you install updates recently?
And try Vista service pack 1, it could be that your hardware is to 'new' for Vista, can be solved by doing all updates including SP1 ...
Its a common problem that happens frequently to high end Computers, mostly its just the updates... Not always but mostly...
-
I have the latest version of windows vista at the moment... there are no updates to download!
-
Here are some tips:
1- Do a clean up to you'r PC, maybe with so much... uhhh... things you don't need you might have (no offence  ) the PC get's slow.
2- Maybe you'r PC is a bit fragmented. Try to defrag it :]
3- Search "OneCare" in internet, and do a scan with it. This might take for 3 hours or 2.
4- If none of them work, format you'r PC.
5- If EVEN FORMATTING doesn't work, change to XP.

1 - I did that when I got frozen 2 times.. so I deleted like 5 stuff... 380 gb free space... shouldnt be problem.. Now got 344 gb space because I installed some converters and made some videos
2 - defragged a week ago... it even said it wasnt needed but I did it
3 - Live OneCare ... Anti virus program... hmm its not virus related I think (I use AVG 8 :)) might give it a try once.
4 - Formatting pc... would probably work, but I am looking for another solution!
5 - XP doesnt support 8GB RAM, thats the same as throwing away 4gb ram :( (and 2gb of my 8gb is video memory!!! which xp doesnt support too)
OH YEAH! I have idea... wait ... system restore goes only back to 20 september... no use :(
Did a backup with registry mechanic... I remember I pressed some button there once so yeah... scanning with registry mechanic... 390 problems... 228 of 396 fixed! woo
Edit 4 (or 3):
currently testing if certian programs cause this problem.
-
Keep the Task Manager minimized in your system tray.
If the computer freeze check if it is running at 100%.
When it does, that means there is a program causing it and you might detect which process it causing it.
If not I suggest to take a look at the site of your video card and check for updates of drivers.
-
I did what you said, and at the moment of freezing, it was not 100%.
Updating drivers... good idea
stupid site... show me the drivers! pff and you do show the gtx dirvers but not the gtx+ !?!?!? :(
*tries american asus site*
EDIT:
Installed GTX driver since the GTX+ button does not work yet... Will install the GTX+ driver later when it works
-
I dont think it worked, my computer froze while I was playing a game, and the whole screen turned into the color of the skybox of the game...
Normally you would see an arena and some guys, but when it froze I saw the color of the sky and down I saw a slight darker color of the same color!
-
I reinstalled my whole windows vista. The problem should be away now I think, if not I will post here again
(Sorry about triple post!)
-
It sounds like the graphic card is causing it..
-
Ok I froze again after installing Quicktime from Apple.
I deleted it now, and I will wait for 5 days to see if the problem is gone, if not I will uninstall other software etc.
-
Install win xp pro 64bit , maybe Vista doesnt support the drivers,
-
my graphic card is supported for vista 64 bit, the site says it... I think its program related...
And I only have a legal vista 64 bit OS and well... I would like to use it since I like it more than XP. But, if things wont work out, and even the shop I bought it at cant seem to know the problem, I wont have a choice. :(
But... I have googled around about quicktime, there are alot of questions if there is a quicktime 64 bit version, and I did not find a normal answer. So it was probably quicktime :)
If it is not, I will throw away the keyboard programs, as they are 32 bit too. If that does not work out, maybe adobe flash player... no? maybe firefox... hmm nope, maybe warcraft 3... etc etc...
-
Update:
It is not quicktime, now I think its my keyboard software.
But I do suspect windows media player too. ( 2 times frozen when playing a song after reinstall! )
I am checking out the time too.. it was 0:44, so maybe it was some kind of update.
-
Install win xp pro 64bit , maybe Vista doesnt support the drivers,
Try Windows XP, I think Proxan is right..
-
There is alot of problem finding drivers to OS with x64 escpeically vista...
-
my first day with VISTA, not much problems yet,
only thing is it always asks permission for anything you wanna do,
but no serious problems.....yet
-
Well, it cannot be really driver related.
I got a new video card, 9800GTX+ ... 64bit supported.
My webcam is currently running 64bit vista driver.
Mouse driver was not needed.
AVG should support vista, not sure though.
Registry Mechanic does not support 64bit vista yet, but I have it installed. Might uninstall it after I freeze. :)

Vista is not really the problem, 64 bit is. I might have installed a program that does not support it, resulting in a freeze. I might be wrong though.
Try Windows XP, I think Proxan is right..
First I will try to see if its program related. If its not, I will email the people from where I got the computer, maybe they know it. If it all does not work, I wont have a choice but to choose Windows XP 64bit.

I am sure you wont find any real problems, just check if its vista compatible, and if you ahve 64bit, check if its vists 64bit compatible.
The thing that it asks for permission you can turn that off, but after some days you think its normal. :)
EDIT: Uninstalled registry mechanic after freeze.
I MIGHT HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM! My firewall blocks svchost.exe ... Maybe that causes the freeze!
EDIT:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3486098&SiteID=17 <- I am using that fix. only time will tell if it works!

dont know if you mean it with SA,
but its causing trouble with SA,
mouse sometimes not working after changing setting,
sometimes esc, and back unfreezes mouse but sometimes not,
and sometimes when you go to menu(esc) it freezes SA,
you get a black screen, but its only SA all other stuff works fine
-
Its switching from menu to game... already know that problem.. but thats not what I mean :)
-
k, and believe it happens from game entering menu,
off topic:
u know how to solve the mouse freeze and that black screen stuff?
-
I believe the black screen will automatically freeze and windows will say it does not work anymore if I am correct... Simply restarting the game would work
And well the mouse freezing... 2 solutions:
solution 1: when your mouse is frozen go to game menu and back, it should be fixed then most of the time (If you do not get a black screen.)
Solution 2(Not sure if it works): Do not alt tab out of the game without pressing escape, this will raise the chance of the mouse freeze and black screen.
Hope this helped.
Regarding to this topic:
No freeze yet, have to wait 48 more hours to know if it really has worked... have not anti virus on now because of the fix though
-

Go to your account settings and disable User Account Control.
-
didnt worked,
solution 1: never worked
solution 2: nothing,
it really sucks, cant play SA
-
Well gta:sa works fine for me! (Dont have it installed anymore.. have to reinstall)
Just start the game and only press escape if you have to. This should help alot...
Regarding this topic:
No freeze yet... 28 hours to go.
-
NEWS:
It is NOT AVG!
I did turn off the nvidia display driver service too, but I accidently put it on in those 72 hours. So, I will have to test that for another 72 hours to see if its that.
-
Still problems... I got a topic on another forum where I am asking help...
They are letting me do all these tests for my RAM and CPU because they think I destroyed it :conf:
-
Well it is working again...
its the CPU FSB ... I changed it to 2.0ghz (normal is 2.4ghz) so I might put it higher since the normal value doesnt work...
