Title: [Tutorial] IRC/Chat
Post by: lavamike on February 19, 2009, 06:29:12 pm
Today I will be showing you about IRC/Chat.  Our goal is to be able to connect to the Argonath IRC Server and be able to join different channels, chat, and basic comands, etc.

First off, what does "IRC" mean?  IRC means Internet Relay Chat.

There are many different clients you can use to connect to IRC servers.  The one I will be showing you how to use is mIRC which is also a very popular client.

Step 1. First, we need to download and install the mIRC software.  Head on over to: http://www.mirc.com/get.html and click Download mIRC.  After you finish downloading mIRC install it.

Step 2. After you have installed mIRC open it up, you may get some pop-up window thing about you have 30 days to register or something but you can always use it for free even if you are past 30 days.  If you want to remove the little startup pop-up things you can register mIRC for pretty cheap I think, not sure.

Step 3. If the options window isn't already opened go ahead and click on the little toolbox icon to open it up or go to Tools -> Options (Alt+O).

Step 4. When you open up the options window make sure you are on the "Connect" tab.  Fill in the info there (Nickname, Alt., Email, Name) and then press OK.

Step 5. Alright now that we are setup we can connect to Argonath's IRC Server.  You should also know that the Status Window is the main chat box that you have when you open up mIRC.  So, in your status window type in: /server 85.25.148.81:6667

Step 6. Now you should be in the IRC server.  The main channel is #ArgonathRPG, but, how do I join it?  Simply type: /join #ArgonathRPG

Step 7. Now you can chat like normal in there.  I will discuss some basic commands here also.  You already know /join and /server but how about changing your nickname?  Easy, to change your nickname just type: /nick nickname

You can also get a list of all the channels available to you by typing: /list

If you have any questions or comments please, feel free to post here!

Also yesterday the IRC went down at one point and anyone trying to connect got the message, "Connection Refused"  That was a problem with the server, everything is up and running now for anybody that may have thought they were doing something wrong and couldn't connect, you can try again now ;)
