I dont really have a good PC and cant play all the latest games. The max I can is to play games released till early 2007. However Outcast, released sometime in the late 90's still features 1st on my all time favourite list. The game was epic for its time with a map equivalent to roughly 3 times the size of SA. It was rated as Game of the year by more than one magazine and boy, it was worth that title
The game is based on the character Commander Cutter Slade(my name ingame is based on this character) who is a Navy Seals commander, called back to help the Government with a certain problem - an alternate dimensional portal equivalent in character to a black hole which was swallowing the earth(See the first 15-20 seconds of the vid). To save the earth Cutter Slade has to take a trip to another planet, planet Adelpha, obtain and repair a lost space probe and return with it. Using info in the probe the dimensional gateway could be closed.
The game was epic for more than 1 reason. One was its huge map size. The graphics was also epic for its time. Third was the level of detail one had to know to succesfully complete the game. It was not an all-out-shoot the bad guy and save the earth game. In the process of finding a a way to retrieve the probe Slade has to help out the people in Adelpha. For this he needs a lot of info from them which has been exquisitely included in the game. You can talk to the characters ingame, know about the area and thus complete your mission.
In no other game have I seen so much importance being given to the level of detail with regard to storyline. For this reason some may find this game a little bit "boring". But if you are patient enough once you get a hang of the controls and terms used, you will thoroughly enjoy the game.
Another amazing aspect of the brilliant game is the soundtrack, performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Without the music the game wouldnt be what it is. Each part of the map has music which is suited to the environment.
The weapons used in this game are amazing too. Again detail has been given to the finer points regarding sound and operation. There has been a lot of imagination used with regard to design of the weapons.
Sadly, just before the release of the sequel, the company which was producing the game(Appeal) went into bankruptcy. An amazing sequel was lost due to this reason. Nevertheless outcast delivered more than what was expected in providing awesome gameplay and detail to the gamers of its time and continuing today(I still play the game)
