Yes we all know it, parents or other adults who are NOT very friendly to the unknown. Especially computers.
The situation is:
I wanted to encrypt our network to provide safety, and the unthankfull people I live with got half pissed. Instead of sorting it out rationally, they jump on conclusions and start to moan.
The problem is, how do I make non patient people to sit down, shut the fuck up. And listen and learn on why we should encrypt the network, and listen to other general computer info.
My dad said that he don't give a shit about the security encyrption, even tough both he and the other woman uses internet to pay bills.
What if someone get's the great idea of eavsdropping on the network?
Meh, in the long run I think they would regret it if someone where to hack our wireless.
So, how?

tie them to a chair and put a big cookie in their mouths :)

Maybe speakerbox was such not as a great idea to post in as I tough. :(

Maybe it would be possible to spread somekind of unharmful viruses, which could give out anti-virus alarms, in your wireless network. Else, make like some weird wallpaper like: c0olh4cker21 0WnZ Y0r C0MpuT3r!

Girder, at my mums house, I have an unencrypted network from next door that I use.
I use this network, and I decided to probe into it to see if I could get any further into this guys life.
I went to 127.0.0.1 (The router's internal IP) and logged in using the default creditentials:username "admin", password "admin".
I got to a page that included his email address and a password. Using a javascript, I revealed this password. I logged into this guys email, got another password using that email, and I ended up with half of his credit card number, his full name, his address, and unrestricted access to his internet account, to his email address and to his router.
ALL because he left his wifi unsecured. I can not stress enough how easy this was. I have a .txt file with all the info I got from my little mission. Here's a picture of my text file, with important stuff blocked out:

This took me under an hour to get. There's shitloads more info in that text file, and I think on my next door neighbours behalf, he is really really dumb.
When I move out of that house, I am showing him that text file, detailing HOW I got all that, and hopefully he'll have learnt about security and to use different passwords for everything...
Also, it is SO easy to hack WiFi, to sniff out every single bit of data that gets transmitted to it...Try to stick to the network cables. If you can't, then make sure it is secured or else you could end up with huge trouble.

I don't really know, I failed to convice my house and now we are using cable internet again...

Wow, that's pretty cool. You should tell your neighboor and help him to secure it.

There is a very large difference between encryting the access and encrypting the data.
If you are trying to convince your family to encrypt the access, don't . There are much easier ways to disallow people to enter and spy on your wifi access.
As for encrypting the data, if you can show that it can be done without your family having to use difficult connection methods or safety programs, they will probably agree.
But remember that a very large part of the online fraud is done with data collected offline.
also in security you must always think of the following:
- How much does it affect the standard (ignorant) user ?
This means that for people who are not interested in computers and internet connections, all they want for it is to work without problems. If you have to use 5 keys and 3 codes to use your bike, you walk.
- How strong is the protection against 'punks' ?
Punks are people with limited knowledge who find some information go 'lolz' and try it out, without even realising the implications of what they do. Protection from them is often easy and does not need a lot of security.
- What is the damage they can do ?
Check the maximum amount of damage and weigh it against the cost and effort of protection. Take in to consideration that for instance most banks take extensive measures so that it is safe to use their payement methods in a public place.
- Does it secure against a professional hacker ?
No. Never.
-
- Does it secure against a professional hacker ?
No. Never.
So if a hacker marks your ass, you are screwed?

Here's an easy way to convince them:
Let them know that anyone driving up and down the street trying to do a "drive-by wireless" hack could steal all your information just while the go from one end of your neighborhood to the other, and it's quite common as well. A password on your computer would have a better chance at protecting you from a hacker in your house than not having a password/encryption would on your network.
