Title: [Team Fortress 2]Wireless connection: dlink DWL-G112 - Need help (XP and Ubuntu)
Post by: Gird3r on July 15, 2009, 05:22:24 pm
So a friend of mine got me "half" addicted to this wonderfull game, I decided to buy it and play it.

Before I explain the situation, don't ever suggest (Go wired), because my dad simply don't want to drag wired cabled tru walls etc etc.

Now, onto the problem.

For the ease, I will be playing on windows xp until they get Steam voice communication to work in wine.

I have a dlink DWL-G112 USB wireless adapter wich works very fine to surf, download porn etc, however. In games based on steam, I get the dreaded *spooky* laaaag spiiiikess.

And not a normal lag spike ethier, they always come when i'm about to backstab someone. Or atleast when I don't want them to come.

Hardware revision for the adapter is C1, and it's supported under Linux.

Anyways, I tried: Placing the dongle higher up in the air, raising cl_updaterate to 100 and rate to 25000
Lowering graphics when on windows (wine forces me to go 800x600 and lowest graphics or the game wont join a server), however, this did not make any change at all at the lagspikes, so I raised it again so the faces of players would not look retarded.

The cl_updaterate did improve it, but not enough to the extent I want.

Oh and my ping usually is between 23-50 on most servers. So I don't see why I get the laaaaag spiiikes.

So, how do I improve this so the lagspikes wont occour as much or dissapear completly (My brodband is 10 Mbits so I don't really think that's the problem.

I actually have not tried to go wired, but if someone decides to help me and wants me to try it, of course I will try wired.

Sooo.

!(Network is not secured)!
Router is a dlink DI-524 and all settings on default.

Help please. (I would not mind if you could give some advice for how to improve the wireless on ubuntu too.   :)

As its been a long time scence ive played on steam.
I do still have it.
If you only get it on one server its the server, as i got this too. lag spikes where my computer would go up to 800 ping :S
Usualy i get 60-80 ping
Try some of thease:

Quick fixes: cl_cmdrate, or diffrent commands to imput into the console. Changing your frame rate or how the game is running, diffrent things you can do to change your lag, such as setting a mask (where you see the kids in game with 3 ping all the time, never changes)

I dont know your system spec so if you leave that in a reply under me that would be helpfull.

Router - I had problems on just steam cutting in and out with kicking me saying (No vac connection) meanning, my internet was practicly turned off. But i only got this on certan servers.

You may just be getting lag spikes on that server or your router may be bad. I had problems with internet connection tell we called the internet service and they said that they would come take a look. And said that our router was bad so they gave us a new one. Sadly i think it was bullshit that our router was bad knowing that internet worked fine it was just ingame that was bad.

In conclusion you can probly fix this lag spike with a command in console. Just type in cl and then scroll through that list of commands seeing if any rate commands are there. If you dont know what they do, just type it in and press enter without any values. A hour or so of troubleshooting through the commands should do the trick.

If all fails. Google is your friend. And steam forums.

Hopefully i helped in some way or another.

Cheers,

I get no lagspikes on wired connection, and I played on same servers as when i was on wireless and got the lag spikes. So I can exclude that it's my computer specs and my internet and the servers.

This is something to have to do with the wireless, I moved it like closer to the router but nah, did not improve so much. Altough I got better ping. ^^

I will try the cmdrate command.

I have this exact same problem with a WiFi adapter.
Lag spikes up to 10,000 randomly....

Maybe this will help?

It did only 1% increase, and the position to achieve it was not worth the troblue. However, thanks for trying to help out.

And btw, I solved the problem in xp.

It had to do with windows wireless service. But a custom bat file solved it.

So, do anyone have any tips for getting it to work in ubuntu too?

Here it is.

Be sure to be connected to a wireless network/router before using it.

As I understand it uses www.google.com as a server for the ping command. It seems to be non-harmless.
It also don't seem to send so much ping commands. It also has some sort of If command.

Anyways, it works great for windows xp.
