Title: CPU temperature..
Post by: Kessu on November 18, 2009, 04:58:50 pm
So, I've overclocked my Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 from 2.5 GHz to 4GHz, raising CPU Voltage from 1.1V to 1.475V..
Now to the "problem":
My PC gets an error (Bluescreen) after playing long time, or game which stresses CPU more "than a normal" game.. Bluescreen becomes because of over 100c temperature, sometimes even that cannot come, just total freeze.. It is tested to be fully stable, but the problem is temperature..

How can I make CPU temperature lower, without money, without decreasing overclocks..

What I've tried so far:
Cleaning CPU heatsink + all the fans and computer case;
Computer Case is open;
Fans are all running with 100% speed, making a terrible noise -.-
I'm using Intel's Boxed cooler, Sonata III with Noctua NF-12P fan..

I'm afraid you need better cooler, (water cooling) or your CPU will die sooner or later because of the overheats...

No money for water cooling.. :(
I may need to sell something to get new cooler (not water) (or wait for Xmas)

But till that, I'd need a solution to make it stay under of 90c..
Throttling is set to off, 'cause I can't stand if my PC lags.
Auto shut-down is on, 'cause I don't want to make my PC not working.

Try to make a custom Fan
/me facepalms.
There is no way to add more fans into the case, without breaking it.
If you mean to "modify" my CPU cooler, no way, I want it cooler, not more warm

Under-clock it until you get a better cooler for it. :)

That is not an option, it comes slower.

Well, would you rather  play on a slower PC than buy a new CPU each month? :)

Playing with slow CPU = nightmare.
Playing with fast CPU = dream
Buying new, faster CPU = Playing with fast CPU :]
Either way, I am not going to buy new before Core i9.

Then what are your options?

Play with slow CPU? Or don't play at all after a while? :)

1.1 to 1.47 is waay to much man..
big jump in voltage = big jump in heat output..

Solution: get a nitrogen coolant or drop the voltage...

:ps: why da hell do you need to overclock it? its nice cpu.. :trust:

That CPU is kinda old, but its good for any sort of games, though on newer games obviously you will not get a high performance, but really.
Overclocking from 2.5 to 4Ghz is too much..
it doesnt matter if its apparently stable, its still not working properly ofc if its crashing like it is.

Drop the CPU frequency to around 3.5 - 3.6Ghz, you will still get a great amount of performance and it will help lower the temperatire of your CPU.
From around 3.6Ghz - 4Ghz there is not a largely noticable power difference on those Dual Core CPU's,

Unless the rest of your comuter is really shit, then just clock your CPU down to about 3.6Ghz and dont say its going to make  the PC slow because thats bull.

I need the same voltage for 3.5 GHz, and also it is known fact that GHz does not raise temperature, voltages does. I'd need to set it to 1.3 to get ~70c temps, 1.35 makes it 90c.. 1.47V can raise it upto 120c in matter of seconds with 100% load.

Alright, if you say so.
But really, i assure you, there is no possible way to drop the temperature without spending cash on cooling, buying a new Heatsink or just clocking down the CPU and dropping the voltage.

2.5Ghz was still alright for games so why not then just drop the voltage and drop the CPU frequency to 3Ghz even..

there is no point at all running your CPU at such high frequencies and voltages when its not running properly and damaging the components.

Try this program called 'speedfan', you can control your fanspeed with it, maybe you can also raise the RPM.

that program is useless, you will only be able to control the speeds of the fans being powered through the motherboard, as in the GPU, CPU and maybe 1 auxillary fan which you have connected.. its pointless.. you may as well leave fans on 100% permanently...

I already have all fans @ 100% speed. There is no way to raise them, boxed cooler shouts at 3600 rpm, NF-12P at 1300 rpm, video card is not in 100% as it is @ 40c while overclocked and in load
Setting my PC at balcony helps, but rain does not help (no glasses at balcony (or however spelt)). Finnish weather sucks most of the time at autumn/winter

i just thought of the perfect way to cool your PC...

You have a Freezer right?...
put it in your room and put your PC in it...  i think it will maybe stay cool... LOL

just joking, just so you know...

Did you place those cooling yourself?
If so, did you checked if the Airflow is okay?

as any expirienced overclocker would say, 30% is the max safe for voltage, and yes frequention(Hz) is directly proportional to voltage...

1.5V are so called "Killer Voltages".
Ryan, I did check :)

You could ofcourse try to increase the voltage on your fans to make then even faster, but watch out, too much voltage and boom, the fans are dead.

not being rude but thats the most useless answer ive heard yet.. if you push to much speed out of the fans the bearings will overheat inevatably because theyre only rated to go upto a certain RPM for safety issues.

Perhaps you should clean your cooler and format your hard drive

PS:I had the same problem aswell
Title: Re: CPU temperature..
Post by: Devin on November 20, 2009, 09:42:30 pm
Incase you dont know anything, which you dont..

Formatting the Hard Drive will do NOTHING at all to the CPU being too hot from Over Clocking...

Hard drive does not make any difference to CPU temperature, unless if it is too hot and makes airflow go hot too.. (As it is infront of my PC), but I'd guess 25c is not too hot..
Cleaning coolers... Read page number one.

Me and The IT Technician tried this at my school:
Get a desk fan,
Take the Covers of your PC, then put the fan next to the computer. (Make sure the Fans turned on xD)
This should help to ease the problem.
But your better or getting a better cooling system

Your cpu temp is 25 C and u want to lower it?

It is over 100c when playing.. 50+ in idle.

you honestly needed some "IT technician" to tell you that putting a bigger fan by your case would cool it, its kinds obvious that it would.  :poke: but its impractical, no one wants to sit with a desk fan blowing into the case to keep it cool.

No, The computer had a stupidly high Temp, We shoved a big ass fan there and problem solved :D

Did you, at any point remove the CPU? If yes then buy some new thermopaste-diddly ( Don't know how it's spelled in English ), remove the CPU and the heatsink and clean every single remain of the old thermopaste from the CPU Socket. Then reapply the new one and reassemble the whole thing. BTW It's near X-mas so you can spend some $$ on water cooling but what I'd suggest is a new PC with a Core i7 920 D0 - that's what Im in the middle of building and it's VERY darn good.

One thing you might want to try is to keep the case closed, and check that your cooler is actually able to attract cool air.
If the case is open, cooling often gets worse.

On a slightly idiotic note... with this weather just put your PC outside. It will cool by nature. :D

Post by: Kessu on December 20, 2009, 04:30:50 pm
My CPU has Noctua's NT-H1 thermopaste, so no problem with that.

Gandalf, I already set it to outside, to get more overclocking, but it went over 100c there too (-10c outside)

Closing the case raises the CPU temperature by 5-10... So I'll keep it open on days, closed at nights so I can sleep :D

IF you can post pics of your heatsink and cooling fan so we could check it out and see if there's anything visibly wrong. PS: Do you hear strange noises? Does it feel like the fan's shaking about and ready go through the case at any point and stick itself in your desk?

Not suggesting you try this but it worked for me , Get a fire Extinguisher and wen i gets over 35 degrees Celsius spray it a little bit with the fire extinguisher, down side is it that you get foam everywhere good luck
