Title: Michael Schumacher To Return To F1?
Post by: Fabio on November 20, 2009, 08:54:11 pm
Just a couple of months after Michael Schumacher cancelled his comeback to replace Felipe Massa because of a neck injury, there is a lot of sources suggesting he could be back next season driving in the now Mercedes GP team.

After Mercedes had bought Brawn GP, it was made clear that Jenson Button was not wanted and a German driver partnership was wanted, early indication was that Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld were lined up to join the team as the drivers for next season.

But after days of speculation, the story is developing that the 7 time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher could be returning to F1 in a Mercedes GP in the 2010 season, reports say he had recently signed a new deal with Ferrari, but it did not involve F1, it was more of a Ferrari Road Car testing contract.

This story is sure to develop in the next few days...

Michael Schumacher has always been my favourite driver, but I am also sad to see that Raikkonen has not got a team for next season currently, maybe he and Schumacher could partner at Mercedes GP! :D

I have stopped watching F1 after Schumacher's resignation because it simply got boring.. I'll be happy to see him again if he returns.

In my opinion this will take some excitement out of the racing of this year because whatever happens in F1, controversy, overtaking, it all gives Formula 1 the excitement.

On the contrary. Now most drivers will not overtake others due to pit stops. With less stops, strategy will play a less important role and drivers will have to overtake more.

As for Schumi coming back, it would not be a good decision. First of all the current cars are no where near what he was used to, and as 2009 showed not many drivers could handle a car without a lot of testing.
Secondly, he has nothing to gain except money. If he wins people will point as Mercedes and Ross Brawn. If he loses people will tell they knew he was never that good...

He is actually fit enough, his neck injury was only one that would take time to heal, by the start of the season, he could be in perfect shape.

2010 grid:

McLaren-Mercedes : Hamilton - Button (Hamilton - Kovalainen)
Ferrari : Alonso - Massa (Raikkonen - Massa)
Williams : Hulkenberg - Barrichello (Rosberg - Nakajima)
Renault : Kubica - TBA (Alonso - Grosjean)
Red Bull : Vettel - Webber (?) (Vettel - Webber)
Toro Rosso : Buemi - TBA (Buemi - Bourdais/Algersuari)
Force India : TBA - TBA (Sutil - Fisichella/Liuzzi)
Mercedes : TBA - TBA (Button - Barrichello)
New:
USF1 : TBA - TBA
Campos : Senna - TBA
Lotus : TBA - TBA
Manor : Glock - TBA
Sauber : TBA - TBA

Retired :
Toyota (Glock/Kobayashi - Trulli)
BMW (Kubica - Heidfeld)

Current F1 drivers looking for a seat:
Kovalainen - ?
Raikkonen (will do WRC in 2010)
Rosberg - Mercedes ?
Nakajima - ?
Grosjean - Renault ?
Heidfeld - Mercedes ?
Algersuari - Toro Rosso/Campos ?
Bourdais - USF1 ?
Sutil - Force India / Mercedes ?
Fisichella - ?
Liuzzi - ?
Trulli - ?
Kobayashi - ?

There are going to be some new faces, and surprisingly there will be one team that will keep both their racing drivers (though not yet confirmed), unlike most of the years before.

I would like to see Sutil at Mercedes, in the F3 he was team mate of Hamilton and on just a little slower, many times because of team orders.
Also I hope that Kobayashi will find a seat. In the two races he drove he was spectacular, did not make too many mistakes and seemed to be the only driver who could step in to the 2009 car and be just as fast as his team mate.

2010 will be a battle between McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull. Meredes will suffer from losing both drivers and not having a lot of budget to develop teh 2010 car.
As for the new teams, I do not expect a lot.

Watch Hulkenberg at Williams, I tip him as Mercedes driver for 2011.

Rosberg will most likely go to Mercedes GP (Brawn GP) and either team up with Michael Schumacher or Nick Heidfeld.

Sutil I think will stay with Force India.

Fisichella is confirmed as Ferrari's test driver for next season but he may be loaned out to another team.

As for the battle for the titles next season, I think it will be the closest ever season challanging, with Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, Redbull all challanging for the drivers and constructors title, if Michael Schumacher is to come back, it would be very intresting for the title battle, because then you will have Schumacher, his team mate in Mercedes, Hamilton, Button, Alonso, Massa, Webber and Vettel all challanging for a title.

I doubt Michael Schumacher would damage his reputation driving for a team with a below par car for next season.

I cannot wait, this will be very exciting, I am also very happy to hear that he has signed a 3-Year contract, so he won't be just back for one season. :D :D :D

I see Mercedes Sauber GP failing, and Schumi returning to Ferrari, to replace Alonso in 2011 :D

Ross Brawn said in a interview with BBC Sport yesturday that it is a 3-year contract.

You mean Mercedes GP Petronas, Sauber is a different team, which was BMW Sauber before.

So at the moment Michael Schumacher says that the Mercedes GP car isn't as fast as they hoped, but he thinks as the season goes on it will become a race winning car.

This F1 season will certainly be very exciting and I cannot wait till it begins. :D
