Title: Argonath past, present and future
Post by: Gandalf on February 12, 2010, 08:51:34 pm
The last week we have made a major operation on Argonath, one that we have not done for a long time. We have decided to move the server to a new IP and hardware.

This is something that has had a number of reasons. First of all we have been getting complaint about in game lag, and one of the possible options was the current hardware being old and low in RAM.

Another reason was that the owners of Argonath are also not immune to the world crisis. Our personal finances have limits, and with the end result of the year 2009, we have had to take some steps.

When we created Argonath there were two things we were sure of. One that it would probably cost money, second that we wanted to continue once we started.
In 2006 we started with just MTA:VC and spend about Eur 50,00 per month.
During 2007, with the opening of SA:MP and VC:MP, that amount was raised to Eur 150,00 per month. When opening Parallel Universe, we split the cost between te communities, and went down to Eur 100,00 per month. However as we have been using a lot of extra servers, we also take part in Azellus, which was intended to partially cover the cost.
Due to the crisis in 2009, which saw many clients disappear, we have actually made a loss, with as a result a much higher cost as foreseen.

On top of this, the old servers got in to hardware trouble, causing loss of data for Paruni and a number of Azellus clients.
This has lead us to cut all extra servers, and change all Argonath and Paruni servers to the latest hardware. As for cost, we are back to Eur 100,00 for each community monthly, but it may grow if we want to have some extra features.

For the future we do wish to upgrade the current hardware, and get it to the best available level. For that we will need some continuing support from the community, and we will soon release some plans to help things forward.

Argonath will continue, and we will move forward.

Despite financial woes as a result of the credit crisis in 2009. Please rest assured that our community are behind their leaders in paving forward a new generation of humour, enjoyment and gratitude.

It's clearly time to exhaust all opportunities of strength within the community and perhaps introduce new policies which bear close to the Argonath vision. We may want to closely analysis our competitors to see whether we are maximising the impact of our community to its effectiveness. This may help offset the current expenditure.

We may also want to consider closing down non-core operations which may be deemed exploitable or resource draining. For example, sub-communities such as VC:MP or MTA:VC should be reviewed, restructured or perhaps closed down in a effort to shore up strength in core assets such as SA:MP.

This community has been a pillar of strength, learning and understanding for players from different cultural and traditional backgrounds. Whilst the outlook is challenging, we can remain confident that community commitment and moral are at it's highest for a long time.

You can rely on my and others professional support whenever you need Gandalf.

Frank, are you seriously out of your mind?

MTA:VC has always been ArgonathRPG's home and always will be.

VC:MP is slowly growing into a big part of the Argonath community, with VC:MP R2 released as well, there is big potential for VC:MP in the coming months.

Just because the servers are not full with 100 people 24/7 dosen't mean people don't play them and don't appricate them, maybe you don't, but the players if the communities do.

We have been thinking of closing down, however apart from that we feel we should not rest on a single base, the amount of resources these servers need are vastly lower, and have little to no influence on the hardware.

Fabio, I was wrong to jump to the conclusion that VC:MP or VC:MTA may be considered non-core to the vision being envisaged. I really do think though, if my assumptions are correct about the projection of finances is that we should sit down and review whether the business model of Argonath is running effectively. This includes reviewing whether VC:MP or SA:MP for example is operating at capacity and fits in line with the view of the owners and community members.

Whilst no decision is taken lightly especially considering the scale of impact on community members, it's vital for the business model to be operating strongly and with a future proof mindset which will be sustainable for years to come. I agree that closing down areas which have a strong heritage and track record may come as a shock but ultimately are paramount to rebuilding commodity in the Argonath brand and improving playability in core areas.

Well, First i would like to say Thank You Gandalf.
The money you have spent on this humble community has been much appreciated.
I am glad that it has stayed open because to be honest, without Argonath i would be very bored

There is no server quite like Argonath, Not just the scripts but the Entire Community.
I love Argonath a lot and hope to see it live on for many years to come.

:ps: Once i obtain more Money into my Paypal account, I will gladly donate more Money.

Im glad to hear this, maybe this will get most of the players to realize that the owners arent just some rich millioniares but also regular peoples like us, the only difference is just that they spent their money on you, wich im highly glad for, as they have changed the whole game for me and also made alot of fun for both me and might also be you too.

I hope it will go very good with the servers and economy and yeah Good luck :)

Yeah, but it would be great, if MTA:VC would have any players in it 24/7, but we don't nor usually 10 at high peaks. The truth is MTA:VC is mainly dead and if necessary I think it can be closed down. MTA:VC is and always will be where Argonath started that won't change, but as Argonath moves on, players should too. If the MTAVC server would be closed down, those players who are from there, you included would become Legendary as you are from the birthplace of Argonath.

But as Gandalf said, it doesn't take that much resources it is good it stays running.

Yes, one of the many things Argonath has helped me improve is my English skills. After viewing my first post on this forum, and then comparing it to my more recent posts, it almost makes me laugh at the huge difference grammatically wise.

It's also helped me with many, many other things, such as my sense of humour, socializing skills, confidence and other things of which I class important.

In a sense, without Argonath, I wouldn't be the person I am today, and for that, I sincerely thank you.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped in aiding Argonath's lasting; whether it be financially or by just having a better attitude ingame. As someone has said, this is what we need to hear, that Argonath will continue to move on and that we can make it through the tough times. Because at the end of the tunnel, there is the light.

Thank you Gandalf and all other Argonath developers that have made this community grow upto what it truely is. You guys are the backbone to Argonath and without you I wouldnt have met some of my best online friends. Thank you for taking the strives that you have taken to make the server a better place for all of us. I know with the budget crisis striking us in 2009 that alot of people are strugling and the fact that you guys would go to take an extra step to help Argonath says how truely dedicated you are.

When I get a few extra dollars into my paypal account you can gaurantee that it will be going towards Argonath and I hope to see this community around for many years to come.

You don't know why it's inactive, do you? It's not the fact that Argo's players don't care, it's the fact that the software is bugged and needs updating. I can't talk about it, but don't lose hope right now, as there will be a chance in the future for it...

SA:MP servers actually run beautifully on a server with 512mb RAM. Though if servers run plugins, the amount can be used up. Just like Kye's(SA:MP Creator) plugin 'MapAndreas' uses 70MB RAM and all it does is detect where a building or where the ground is from the X and Y co-ordinate the player is at. He worked is so hard to be fast that it comes around the 20 - 30 ms mark of execution. Maybe even faster.

We are with you Gandalf..

The Argonath Community has become a second family, where we are all, mostly, friends. A lot of good friends that are dear to me have been made, who are always there for you, and will support you when needed. Argonath has grown beyond any expectation which could've possibly been thought of which has made it such a unique community to be part of and enjoy. The work that has gone into Argonath is just astonishing as it has continued to create and improve on many aspects which makes it so valuable to many members who have been in this community for a long time or even those who have recently joined and have come to like Argonath.

Argonath may have had its up and downs through the years but it has always been there to make friends and have fun when your bored.

Long live Argonath.

MTA:VC might be our birthplace, but the cold hard fact is. The software itself is way to old and outdated to be of any interest to new players.

You may script as much as you want, but the software needs to adapt to the future, which it can't thanks to MultiTheftAuto itself is not updating it/will not update it.

Honestly, in my opinion the MTA:VC server should be shut down. It might be fun for the oldschools to play on, but it won't attract new players in the way it needs to to be really active.

If you guys really want mta:vc to breath strong once again, you need to talk to the original developers and ask for the source code. Otherwise I see no future in mta:vc.

You know, new players always show up on MTA:VC, even though it's nothing compared to the ASE times...
The problem is that new players don't have any regulars to play with since 99% of them left to other Argo servers...
These new players join server, no one experienced there, they leave.
Last time MTA:VC got really active was in November/December, guess who made it active in first place? a few new players.

About the talk of shutting down MTA:VC... Well, we already went through that last year, fortunately it was decided not to be done.
But, if one day main devs have to do it, who am I to say otherwise?

I'm thankful to you guys for giving us the opportunity to play in such amazing community. Month after month.
Argonath is my second home, it's where I first come to when I have free time.

I'm also thankful to some loyal MTA:VC players like Zaila, Trobby and Grzesiek, who are always there helping on server activity.

I have to agree with everyone here. Argonath RPG has helped me regain my love in the police force, which has inspired me to make my life-long career in law enforcement like I once wanted to do. Thank you for that. It also helped me find the love of my life, and regain my interest in GTA modifications, not to mention something top secret I'm currently working on. Also what Argonath RPG is good for is teaching you social, business and many other skills, just by RPing different things which you can also use IRL.
I think if people start playing Argonath at an age of 12-14 they can really develop and experience a good community, good friends, social skills in talking, acting, helping, etc.
