Title: Lolwat. Bios can't detect my HDD as Master & with Win7?
Post by: Grovyle on February 18, 2010, 10:33:47 pm
Oh hi.
I'm posting this topic by using linux that I have installed in my PC (got it running somehow... raping F8 ftw)
So uhhh, it's a funny story. I turned off my PC to make my homework (since mom is strict about it) then I made the homework. 1 hour later I went to play on my 360 then...
forget it
Story's too long.

Important part starts NOW:
Anyways, problem is that when I turned on mah PC, the BIOS loading screen thingy (BIOS Post or something) took longer than usual. Then, after some like what, 29 seconds? The TDE Master thing happened again (check deep in the bowels of this forum section), as it keeps happening, I pressed F1 like if nothing happened, then I get a message that I have to select a proper boot device then reboot or press any key (I pressed any key and same message again)
I was like "lolwat?"
I restarted PC, same thing happened, rebooted completely, still same thing...
NOW TO THE FUNNY PART!
I went to BIOS POST message, then I checked something unusual... that you don't see everyday:
THE 1ST MASTER DISK WAS THE CD-ROM DRIVE?!?!?!? :wow:

But wait! How could the BIOS change the master disk this fast, after shutting down PC? I HAVE NO IDEA!
I checked the BIOS thingy to change stuff and things, and the primary boot disk was really the CD-ROM :conf:
I coulnd't change it so...
But I got an amazing idea!
While the computer was turning on, I tapped F8 for like the whole 29 seconds, then I chose the hard drive. I think I chose the one that the GRUB loader was in (the loader thingy from Linux) and then I could choose the operating system I wanted to!! YAY!!
But I was not fast enough to choose Win7 so it automaticly booted Linux. (hey, at least the OS is pretty, with everything setted up, internet connection... <3 )

So uhhh yeah, the problem still keeps happening if I don't rape F8. And Ubuntu can't recognize Win7s hard drive, so I'm stuck with Linux (I think)

I don't want to take any stupid risks for a while so anyone got any suggestion of WTF is going on?

No formats.
Also, this is OBVIOUSLY a BIOS setup problem, it can't possibly be the Windows. Plus, this is the first time happening, and I never went to dangerous sites or anything to get an dupar ubar virus that can modify the BIOS settings (that's impossible?), or installed anything bad at all, infact, the last thing I've installed was Unity Web Player to sign up for the Need for Speed World beta... yesterday.

I just don't want to mess with the BIOS yet.

Linux is not Windows, Ziad!
If you can access one of the OS systems, Grovyle, then BIOS must be able to detect your HDD, else you wouldn't be able for it.
Check BIOS settings and set HDD as Master then.
You have 1 or 2 hard drives?

I have three hard drives... one with like two games and another with linux...
NOW SOME MORE FUNNY STUFF!
1. The BIOS isn't detecting the disk where Win7 is installed AT ALL, not even in the hard drives section (boot > hard disks), maybe it's an hardware problem/bad connection?
2. The GRUB loader detects Win7 loader, is this safe? Maybe I can load Win7 and BIOS recognizing it (I am expecting a blue screen)

My BIOS is an American Megatrends

Select the hard drive disk as your boot device from BIOS?

If you don't know how to, press Delete or F8 after the motherboard screen (to access BIOS), once you're in there, search for Boot Order and check if your hard drive disk is on the list. If not, just hit enter on the boot list and choose the hard drive disk you have in use.

Tried that
It only detects the 160 GB one (The one with Linux) and the 80 GB one (empty, just 2 games)
If loading the Win7 loader from GRUB any helpful?

You could give it a try.

Alright, I'll give it a try in a bit.

The BIOS CAN'T DETECT the HDD where Win7 is installed (not even in the Hard Drive sections!), but Linux's loader (to choose which OS to choose) CAN.
I'll repeat everything:
1. I have THREE Hard Drives: 500 GB (the one with Win7), a 60 GB one (2 games) and a 160 GB one (ubuntu)
2. GRUB can detect Win7's loader and can be executed (didn't try it yet, I shoulnd't do something I don't know)
3. The BIOS can only detect the 60 GB HDD and the 160 GB HDD, but something funny is that it coulnd't detect Windows 7's HDD before but Win7 still would boot :V ????

I've "studied" a bit how GRUB works, it seems it can make chain loading... this means executing Windows 7's loader would be a way to go

You got the jumpers on the HDD on the right place?

No idea, my brother is the one who takes care of hardware :L
He's comming home next week, if GRUB fails to execute Windows 7's loader, I can survive a whole week with Linux if I could survive 2.5 weeks without the computer at all (since I'm a considerabely large geek/nerd/whatever)
I just miss my Steam games already :C but I'm managing to get San Andreas and SA:MP installed to play :V

k i will make it easy for you :D you can't put linux and windows together and make them boot up on a boot list like when you put 2 windows you can go on bios and make boot priority for HDD each time you need to launch on a windows or linux or you have to remove one of them and everything will work fine :)

Oh god -_-
THERE IS the Windows 7 loader in GRUB list, I DID NOT try it yet, WINDOWS AND UBUNTU ARE IN SEPERATE HARD DRIVES, and BIOS coulnd't detect the HDD BEFORE this happened, BUT WINDOWS WOULD STILL BOOT, but the dumb BIOS actually was assed to find the WRONG drive to boot from (in particular, the CD-ROM drive), this NEVER happened before!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
do you get it?

I WONT BE ASSED to explain any more, as there is NOTHING MORE to explain.

I'm sorry, but, apart from you can't be bothered to read the WHOLE topic, I am pissy at how hard it is to get SA running with a GOOD FRAME RATE in Ubuntu with WINE, even tried those vertex thingies and pixel shaders fixes, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--------

NEW ERROR!
I tried to load Windows 7's loader with GRUB and I get this message:
error: no such device: c272b2e372b2dafd
Press any key to continue...

I press any key, it brings me back to the GRUB loader, and if I select Windows 7 loader again, same thing happens...
Maybe the Hard Drive got disconnected for some reason, or died?

No idea mate
But the BIOS keeps saying that no IDE Master HDD was detected (before the virus thing came up, this didn't happen)

Oh sh*t, forgot to update Windows AND AVG! Hold on a sec...
Hehe, just lock/delete this, my 500 GB HDD is f**ked :(
