AROUND 130 people, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and other Polish officials, were killed when their plane crashed as it came in to land at Smolensk airport in western Russia, Russian news agencies reported.
"It clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces," the governor of the Smolensk region, Sergei Antufiev, told Russia-24 television news network by telephone.
There were no survivors when the Tupolev 154 crashed, Antufiev.
Earlier reports from Russian news agency ITAR-Tass reported earlier 87 people had died, but several sources including Reuters were reporting as many as 132.
Polish foreign ministry spokesman Piotr Pszkowski said the Polish president, accompanied by his wife, the army chief of staff and Deputy Foreign Minsiter Andrzej Kremer were on board the plane.
The head of Poland's national bank, Slawomir Skrzypek, was also among the dead, his spokesman told Bloomberg, as well as the Polish deputy speaker.
The Polish government was to hold an extraordinary meeting soon, Reuters reported.
Mr Kaczynski, the identical twin brother of former prime minister Jaroslaw, was on his way to attend commemorative ceremonies at the forest of Katyn in western Russia where 22,000 Poles were killed by Soviet troops 70 years ago.
The crash of his plane occurred three days after Putin and his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, together attended a memorial for the victims of the massacre at Katyn.
The Putin-Tusk meeting there was seen as a huge symbolic advance in Russia's often thorny relations with Poland.

I know, I saw it in Israel forum website and decided to post it.

They were about to land in some Airport in Russia, and all was foggy, untill the plane crashed in a TREE!

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.
Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.
They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.
The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).
Lech Kaczynski is thought to have been on board with his wife
Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.
Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no-one had survived.
"As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip," he said.
"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.
"We are clarifying how many people there were in the [Polish] delegation. According to preliminary reports, 85 members of the delegation and the crew."
The Polish Foreign Ministry said the president and his wife were aboard the plane.
Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also said to have been on board.

While it had it's age, the plane design has good aerodynamics (better of a Boeing 7x7). The President's plane had extra safety checks.
Rather than the plane, the bad weather is blamed. The airport needed visibility at least 800 meters, while the fog reduced it to 500 meters. The plane crashed on it's 4th landing attempt.

Yes, officially - weather conditions - fog all around. Pilots tried to accelerate and give up landing attempt, but they hit the trees with a wing. There was a fire then, and plane crashed.
Another thing - pilots were suggested by the service of SMOLENSK ATC to land in MINSK due to problems. Pilots refused.

With a cruising speed of 975 km/h, the Tu-154 is one of the fastest civilian aircraft in operation and has a range of 5280 kilometers. Capable of departing and arriving on unpaved and gravel airfields, it often operates in the extreme Arctic conditions of Russia's northern territories, where airports can be very basic. With a service life of 45,000 hours (18,000 cycles), but capable of 80,000 hours with upgrades, the aircraft is expected to continue in operation until 2016, although noise restrictions have seen services to western Europe and other areas restricted in recent years.

Problem is that the airport has no ILS, so no "radar" / auto-pilot landing.
That airport has a minimum requirement of 800 meters visibility to land. The visibility in the fog was 500 meters.
Not only the pilot is to blame, but I can't say he was totally innocent. He could divert to another airport.

Ok, the first time - When there was this war in Georgia, then Poland's president and all Baltic presidents (I think) had to fly there. They had to land right in the middle of the battle where all Russian rockets and stuff were flying. The pilot refused, landed in Azerbaijan where they took a car. Poland's president then fired him.
Note that it was the same plane that crashed.
And maybe this time the same thing happened?
Poland's president didn't want to land anywhere else, he didn't want to be late. The pilots probably were scared too, as they knew what happened to the previous pilot, they didn't want to get fired. So they tried to land in this all fog and shit. After the 4th attempt to land, they didn't pull up enouth in the end of the runway, wing hit a tree, and boom.

Ok, the first time - When there was this war in Georgia, then Poland's president and all Baltic presidents (I think) had to fly there. They had to land right in the middle of the battle where all Russian rockets and stuff were flying. The pilot refused, landed in Azerbaijan where they took a car. Poland's president then fired him.
Note that it was the same plane that crashed.
And maybe this time the same thing happened?
Poland's president didn't want to land anywhere else, he didn't want to be late. The pilots probably were scared too, as they knew what happened to the previous pilot, they didn't want to get fired. So they tried to land in this all fog and shit. After the 4th attempt to land, they didn't pull up enouth in the end of the runway, wing hit a tree, and boom.
Actualy there was 1 attempt. From records of black box, plane made 1 round around airport... then he try land.
I agree that pilot was under presure. He was millitary pilot, thats first... second, president (main in command of polish army)... third, (gen. millitary command of all forces)... fourth, (4 gen. millitary command air, land, navy, special foces).

I'll have to be honest. We've all been on aboard planes before, and we've probably been in situations where the plane had to land in rain or foggy conditions. I remember once when a lightning struck the plane that I was in on a journey to Hong Kong, the pilots still made an effort and got us landed safely at the airport. But in this incident, there's a president on board, most prominently the most important person of Poland. And yet, the accident was simply caused because of "pilot error"? That is pretty hard to believe, especially in the 21st century where disciplines are very broad and seriously considered. It's possible that there might be something behind the scenes (At the moment, no-one can tell what it can be).
But this is still a great assumption. I cannot formally propose such an idea until it is proven with solid evidence.

To our guys from Poland - sorry for the tragedy you had... It was a shock for all of us... We support you and understand your feelings... All Polish embassy in Moscow (at least from what I saw) was in white and red flowers, and people were still bringing and bringing...
