Title: Cyber-bullying & Flaming The Difference
Post by: Aldo on August 17, 2010, 01:11:47 pm
-Flaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_%28Internet%29)
Flaming (also known as bashing) is hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of a discussion board, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Usenet, by e-mail, game servers such as Xbox Live or Playstation Network, and on Video-sharing websites. It is usually the result of the discussion of heated real-world issues like politics, sports, religion, and philosophy, or of issues that polarise subpopulations. Internet trolls frequently set out to incite flame wars for the sole purpose of offending or irritating other posters.

Flaming is usually carried out by individuals known as flamers, who are specifically motivated to incite flaming. These users specialize in flaming and target specific aspects of a controversial conversation, and are usually less subtle than their counterparts. Known as trolls, these users are less professional and speak obvious and blunt remarks to incite a flame war, as opposed to the more subtle, yet precise flamers.

-Cyber-bullying (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyber-bullying)
The National Crime Prevention Council's definition of cyber-bullying is "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person."  StopCyberbullying.org, an expert organization dedicated to Internet safety, security and privacy, defines cyberbullying as: "a situation when a child, tween or teen is repeatedly 'tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted' by another child or teenager using text messaging, email, instant messaging or any other type of digital technology." Other researchers use similar language to describe the phenomenon.

Cyber-bullying can be as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has said they want no further contact with the sender, but it may also include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels (i.e., hate speech), ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule in forums, and posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation.

Cyber-bullies may disclose victims' personal data (e.g. real name, address, or workplace/schools) at websites or forums or may pose as the identity of a victim for the purpose of publishing material in their name that defames or ridicules them. Some cyberbullies may also send threatening and harassing emails and instant messages to the victims, while other post rumors or gossip and instigate others to dislike and gang up on the target.

Kids report being mean to each other online beginning as young as 2nd grade. According to research, boys initiate mean online activity earlier than girls do. However, by middle school, girls are more likely to engage in cyber bullying than boys do.[citation needed] Whether the bully is male or female, their purpose is to intentionally embarrass others, harass, intimidate, or make threats online to one another. This bullying occurs via email, text messaging, posts to blogs, and Web sites.

Though the use of sexual remarks and threats are sometimes present in cyber-bullying, it is not the same as sexual harassment and does not necessarily involve sexual predators.

It should be pretty obvious - Flaming is just insulting, bullying is making the other person feel like shit, or at least attempting to do so.

If you do not know the difference and cannot tell the difference between bullying and flaming, you probably deserve to be insulted.

In my opinion (which is worth nothing, of course) Flaming is a form of Cyber Bullying... but technically is isn't, but it is very easy to confuse.

When it gets to the point of one of the arguers decides he wants to END the Conversation, and other(s) Continue, and continuously provoke and or harass the other(s), it is cyber bullying.

If your cyberbullying then you need to grow the fuck up sitting behind your PC screen making someone else feel like shit doesn't make cool in anyway, shows how petty you are.

Through bulling you hurt yourself too, not just the person you bullied.
When provoking/insulting/flaming you show your nature. People are in generally miserable people who are never satisfied.
So they'll talk about someone else to diverse their thoughts. Its the Nature, cannot blame nobody else.

If your being bullied ove MSN simply block them and remove them from your contact list and file a report of abuse againest them.
If it's happening IG or even through Forum PM then contact a Forum Admin or a IG Admin and have your screenshots ready so we can take action which would be in the form of a ban.

Simply ignore the bullies and they'll fuck off, responding to them just motivates them to keep on doing it and go even further.
