Ok im going to purchase a new Home theater system including a PS3 shortly
and not that this is affecting my decision to purchase, but i was informed that PS-PS2 games can't be played on the PS3?
Is this true, if so is there a way around this?

They can be played (if they are originals)
And even if that isn't true, you can buy some classics from PSN Store

All PS3 versions can play PS1 games as long as there is no playback problems with the games themselves.
The only version of the PS3 that can play PS2 games is the 60GB original PS3 which was released back in 2006/2007. Its not manafactured anymore so if you wanted a PS3 that could play PS2 games you could buy a used or collectors edition one. However I wouldn't recommend the 60GB version as its one of the first ones and this can lead to some errors which they might have fixed in the latest PS3's. As well as I heard the 60GB is more likely to get the yellow light of death.
