Title: A way to decrease ping times for some of our citizens (including me)
Post by: the hoobinator on September 30, 2010, 09:47:26 pm
Well the method i was referring to was to use a proxy server.
A proxy with a Insanely fast connection could be used to decrease the ping times of some of our citizens, particularly those who live in the US.
I would recommend that Argonath should set up a proxy on the west coast of the United States in order to lower ping times in North America and the Pacific.

Thank you for reading,

Actually, setting up the proxy would INCREASE the ping of many players. First, we'd have to send the connection to the proxy. The proxy will be like "K GOT INFO HEAR ARGO" and send it ALLLLLL the way to Europe. I don't care how fast the proxy is, it's still going to slow down the connection by SOME amount.

As far as I know there is no possible way to connect two SA:MP servers together, there for this idea would probably not work. Technically it owuld be possible to set up a dedicated server as proxy, but as your internet connection is probably already routed through a backbone from your nearest server, that would not help a lot. If you wish to know, do a tracert and see how many hops are trans-atlantic.

After running a tracert to the server the best place to put proxies would be Las Angeles which sits on a trans pacific line and Washigton DC which is the last domestic hop before it crosses the Atlantic.

Don't download while playing = decrease ping

Check again what I wrote. If there is a large number of hops AFTER the transatlantic a proxy server that would make a direct routing would be interesting. As for hops BEFORE the translatlatic, they would probably still exist.
The best way to lower your ping would be to convince your provider to rerout all SA:MP traffic through LA or DC at once... might cause players of US server to protest though.

I already had my ping increased about 70 to 130, I don't want it to increase even more, I'm happy with current location

Well, my ping is 40...
But you've never seen my frame rate...
If you can find someone who has seen me lagging, he'll fucking faint thinking back about it...

You could ask gandalf and aragorn to come live with you and setup the server there...

Server will never be set on America or Far East as most of the players are already in Europe, I'M happy with Germany host =)

Because you're the one who lagramms people around and then noone can hit you.

I see what you did there.

Quite the opposite... I actually have a harder time hitting people despite good aim. :)
Primarily due to bad hardware as well. On PCs with higher performance than my own, I do better.
