Hello Forum,
Yesterday i've gotten my hands on a non-fuctioning 8800 Ultra. I bought it for 5 euros from the dad of a friend of mine. He used it for 3 months and then it stopped working. He's tried a lot i geuss, but i'm gonna give it another try. I've never repaired a video card and am unsure if such thing is possible. Therefor i'm asking for your help. It would be a waste of the video card to not even try to repair it. This videocard is considered heavier than the 9800GTX, It requires around 200 watts from my power supply, so the first thing i'm gonna do as soon as i can get outside again ( long story ), is buy a 500Watt power supply. More info about the card, for the curious people, should be on google.
Thanks for reading, looking forward to a reply.
Greetings - Salmonella

Set oven to 190 degrees (Celsius), remove any heatshinks and thermal paste from the card and put it on tinfoil balls into the oven. (so it won't touch the plate).
Cook for 10 minutes, then let it cool down (do NOT put it in a freezer), assemble it again and try it out.
And yes, I'm serious.. most 8xxx and even 9xxx cards have problems with the inner connections, which can be fixed by cooking the graphics card.
But, obviously this should always be the last way to fix the card.
-
Yeah Icy, was planning that too, any other options? XD
-
Hi Samonella,
Go With IcyAero's suggestion for sure as that will also remelt the solder on the connections, I dunno about 10minutes! but anywhere between 7 and 10 should be fine! Don't forget to put it on an aluminium foil sheet with some type of bricks so on top so its *hovering*.
As for other suggestions, there are not that many on a died card, if there is any life left in it at all, if you have the options available, i suggest you try and use all of the connections on it, whether it has DVI x2 etc you never know what part of the solder might have got fixed!
I dont know the exact details an the card, but if you could find out what the person you got it off was doing with it (for example heavy gamer etc) most common faults are generally heat realated. So I would suggest that you, before you try the oven technique, as that is a last call method, that you reapply all of the thermal compound from the heatsink :)
Ever thought it could all be down to a dodgy fan ! Make sure that the fan works! Heat is our computers number one enemy!
Good luck & Happy Gaming

DellStorm,
Thanks for that message. To reply ;
The previous owner most likely has gamed a lot with it past 3 months ( even although he's over 40 years old  ). He basically tried everything but doing the oven thing. He allready reapplied new coolpaste to try, that didn't help. This evening i'm going to do the oven method. past hour i've been busy taking off thermal paste ( god damn thermal paste ). There's still some left in sticky places. But i'll take care of it.
Does it matter if there's a little of it left on the card? does it have to be 100% cleaned from thermal paste?
I'll post some pictures in 1 hour most likely.
-
Well, depending of the thermal paste it can actually "fry" on the card itself.. and I bet you don't want that to happen.
And yeh, I know like 20 guys who've fixed their broken 8000 -series or 9000 -series card with 190C for 10 minutes.
-
Salmonella just 'Deal with it'
-
Well i've been cooking it. Didn't work. Will try again later. I think it might've been 150 degrees accidentally. Still having hope
-
You may even want to have the oven set for 200C, as usually the melting point may vary between 180C and 195C
-
I think the card didn't work because of the old motherboard i tested it on. today i tried it on my main computer, but this monster, didn't fit in my mini atx case.
-
Just get a GTX460, for the love of God lol  What you could do is take the mobo out of the case.

8800 ultra is better imo. I'f i'd ever buy a new card it'd be nvidia's best : GTX295

Hahaha, saved onto my computer xD
I bought DDR3 memory, so that i can test the card in my new project! :P Updates about it will come later when i've got the ram. I wont give up y'all! :D
-
It's not better than the 460. And Nvidia's best IS the 460 for being the most bang for buck card out there right now. Get another one for SLI and you've got a 480, 580, 5970 and the future 69xx GPU killer.

Yes but i ment the GTX295, not the ultra, the GTX295 IS for a fact better! :

The GTX295 is for a fact older, hotter, noisier and the same price. It doesn't have DX11 support and eats up more power. Two 460s would be quieter and would kick the living shit out of any single card on the market right now. When you can have one for 100GBP delivered I think that's a rather good deal.

Is there still not warranty on a 3 month card?
Cheers,
Sisko
-
You need to deep fry the graphics card and put some ketchup on it instead of baking it... :poke:
-
Warranty on a 3 month old card?
Not now he has cooked it
-
Well, about how i got it.
A friend of mine bought it from dutch auction site, he used it for 3 months, then it stopped working, then i bought it for 5 bucks, and am now trying to repair it.
This card was sold in 2007, do you think after being the 4th owner, and 3 years, i still have waranty?
-
Allright, good news :
I managed to get my new project running, which includes the 8800 ULTRA, Working!
allright, video card done, now upto a new processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450!
-
You can also check out the new Sandy Bridge or just wait a little longer for the 1156 socket prices to drop and get an i5 for a lower amount of cash and have more features.
-
Intel 2 Quad is pretty Good Though Todor
I do not actually understand i3 i5 etc How many cores do they have?
-

waaaay too expensive for me. I might start a new project with all that 1156 stuff in 2013, when it's at the same price as quad cores are now.
Btw, it's most likely going to be a Q9400 instead of a Q9450 . Better ''stepping'' and closer to my budget
-
Just wait a month and see. The Sandy Bridge 1155 socket is coming out which will make 1156 socket IE the current i3 and i5 prices drop to LGA 775 level.
-
Hi Salmonella, How did you manage to fix a cooked card?
For Your Information Todor,
The Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 are Intel's latest line up of CPUs.
The simple version is, Core i3 is dual core, Core i5 is quad-core, Core i7 is up to 6 cores.
The Core i7 also has Hyper threading, which means 6 cores can do 2 threads at the same time, resulting in a great performance boost.
Hope This Helps!
Happy Gaming!

These i cores have FINALLY caught up with AMD
Lets take for example the AMD Turion, and the 2 core Duo
Intel Core 2 Duo
Core 1--------------------------Core 2
|
|
|
Rest of Computer (RAM etc)
Data only travels along one way, so if you are gaming, both cores can be used, but if the RAM etc has to send data back, the Cores Slow Down because Data is coming both ways
AMD Turion
Core 1===================Core 2
||
||
||
Rest of Computer (RAM etc)
On the AMD, there are two streams, so data can be received and sent at the same time.
So effectively this made the Turion faster than its competitor, however I believe the 'i cores' now use this technology which is why they are seen as 'Smart'
I hope you realise what I mean.
May I also add the Core 2 Duo works sort of like the Core 2 Quad. The later core, ie, the i5, would be a fair bit faster.
Also worth a look at is some of the AMD Phenom x4 or x6 cores. These can be expensive though, especially the x6
Hope this helps you understand :D

Joe, I totally disagree with your thingy about AMD. Intel has been leading almost twice as much since the new millenium.. Anyways, you should make a topic about it, not discuss it here.
Hi Salmonella, How did you manage to fix a cooked card?
First i took off the plastic cover, after that i loosened the screws, located at the bottom of the card. These screws were there to keep the thermal heat sink attached to the card. I took out the heat sink and cleaned all the proccesors on the video card itself from thermal paste. I did that with benzene ( took me almost 2 hours to do that stuff ). When i took off the other removable parts ( IO should etc. ) , I took the card and I cooked it at 200 degrees / 220 degrees celcius for 10 minutes. After that i let it cool down for 1 hour, reattached everything, new thermal paste and tested it. When i tested it, it did not work, so i did all this over again. Didn't work neither.. After that i realized it wasn't the video card not repaired... It was the motherboard, which didn't support the card for some reason
I decided to ''finnish'' my new computer project, in order to test the card. It was easy, because i only needed RAM. So i bought a 4 x 1 GB DDR3 1000MHZ kit for 25 euros ( pretty cheap huh? ). When i first booted the computer the computer, the CPU cooler started blasting at 4500RPM, I didn't know why at first, but it turned out that motherboard didn't support an Intel Celeron D. So i took out a Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 out of my other PC ( i really have a lot hehehe ). When i inserted it, the computer immideatly worked. From that moment, the computer lives on with the 8800 ultra :P.
Just a personal summary of the stuff i collected and have to collect :
-Motherboard - ASUS P5P43TD PRO - Costed me 40 bucks, this summer
-Video Card - ASUS EN8800 Ultra ( nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra ) - Costed me 5 euros - repaired it
-Processor - Most likely gonna be an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 - Going to cost 110 euros
-RAM - 4GB DDR3 - costed 25 euros
-Power Supply - ocZ Technology Stealth X-Steam 2 at 600 watt - bought it off a friend of mine today, for 10 euros.
-Case - Coolermaster Centurion 534 Plus - Costed me 30 euros, this summer -
Picture :

Harddisks and stuff taken from another PC, which i own, so it didn't cost anything.
Total spent - 110 euros
Planning to spend on quad core - 110 euros
These prices don't make any sence huh? :P
Also to get back on that i3 and i5 idea of yours, Todor ; I really dislike these CPU's.. If i'd buy something else than a quad core, it's going to be an i7. Probably around 2013
-
Even so, the AMD cores a year ago WERE faster.
Newer ones are more equal, however AMD chips are slightly behind, so they come from the factory slightly overclocked, thus increasing the temperature of them also when being used.

What I meant was that a new set of i3 i5 and i7 processors is coming out along with a new socket which replaces the current i3, i5 and i7 8XX which are on the 1156. The I7s on the 1366 sockets are still the flagship processors.
Also there is a dual core i5, the 650. The i3s, as you said, are strictly dual core. All dual cores have hyperthreading, however the i5 quad doesn't. All i7s feature this, though. Only the i7s on the 1366 socket feature tripple channel ram, though, which is what sets them far apart from the current competition. Now this will probably change in the near future when Bulldozer comes out.

Now I am an ATI fanboy, not an AMD one. AMD CPUs in general are not as good as the equivalent Intel but are cheaper, the motherboards they use following the same trend. Frankly AMD have ruined ATI with the new 6xxx series GPUs. They simply do not wipe the floor with the oposition, the opposite happens.
Salm, isn't that a midi tower case?
-
Yeah it's a midi tower, todor. Some guy offered it me for cheap price :P . I couldn't resist! xD
-
Has any fan mounts? I sure hope so cos the idea of putting all that beautiful hardware into an unventilated case makes me want to shoot myself
-
Come on, it's a Coolermaster :D
Fans -
2 Case Coolers ( the guy where i bought the case from included them ), they're really silent and kind of big
1 GPU cooler
1 SPU cooler ( as big as the SPU )
1 CPU cooler ( standard, planning to buy big heatsink with 2 cpu coolers on it, as soon as i get a quad core, overclocking time! :P )
There's also place for another smaller cooler at the case, but my motherboard only has 2 of these 3 pin inputs, will get a molex 4 pin > 3 pin connecter when possible, so that i can install one there too.
And lol, isn't coolermaster like... THE brand for ventilation and ventilated cases?
-
Good news, i bought a Q9550! for 120 euros
-
What cooler are you getting? *Fingers crossed for NH-D14*
-
I'm yet unsure about my cooling, Most likely i'd buy some second hand coolermaster hyper 212 from someone in the neighbourhood.
I have decided to replace my Coolermaster Centurion 534 with the Coolermaster HAF 932
(http://www.pc-herstel.nl/images/Cooler20MasterHAF932.jpg)
Such a beauty! . Mainly i need this case because it's got better airflow. it has airflow at the top of the case, I need that, because my airflow at the moment is not working good, because there's a closet next to the PC. Temperature of my GPU is around 80 degrees celcius...
-
on my laptop the GPU gets to about 100 degrees when playing GTA SA
Thats bad right?

above 60 is generally ''bad''. If you'd be able to, you could make bratwurst with your CPU! :P
-
I have a cooler on it which lowers the temperature to about 90 degrees, but I do not know how to improve it any more :P

Keep it away from cupboards walls etc, and in a cool room, such as a Air Conditioned room. Maybe use a fan.
-
It's sitting freely on a desk, with an additional USB powered cooler underneath.
It overheats a little, so the computer suddenly slows down and the fan goes noisy

Are you able to cool it down, maybe with a fan or something?
-
I could, but its not practical

I could, but its not practical
I realise that that, it worked quite well on my really old Windows 95 Desktop, it use to heat up ALOT
-
Would putting an airline into the fan and blowing pressurised air through it help?
May be clogged with dust, my desk has a decent amount of dust on it.

I think it'd be safer to open the case instead.

lol. Good Plan, I don't want the laptop to explode

Joe, i did some research and found the perfect solution i think. Coolermaster offers these things for around 30 bucks :

I do not speak Dutch :P I'll see if I can translate it using a translator.
I already have something similar to this.
Are these powered by USB, or plugged in to another plug socket?
Joe
-
I dunno.. I had a great big 15cm tower cooler stuck to the bottom of my laptop with two Yate Loons at one point.. that cooled it down well. Pretty much everything else I've tried though.. when playing heavy games such as Crysis it went berserk! Max I've ever had on it even at stock, though is around 80 odd.. 90 and above is just plain dangerous and you have a really shit computer. You should try reapplying TIM as sometimes the idiots in Malaysia just whack em up together totally half-assed.

I would have thought HP was a decent brand.
May I say I am unsure if the sensors are correct, it says the PC is at 59 degrees as soon as it boots up.

Ah no problem, just like to help :P . I hijacked my own topic to be honest :P.
Although i think discussing computer brands is a little too off topic. But meh, i wanna merge in ; it's not because of HP that your laptop died, it's because it's a freaking laptop... HP is one of the best brands out there, if i'd ever buy another new PC ( never ), it would be an HP.. Don't get me started on all Asus and Dell their flaws :P
