Title: Gran Turismo 5
Post by: Jcstodds on November 27, 2010, 10:41:30 am

Hey guys. Just got my collectors edition the other day. It's been a 5 year wait... but my god this is a good game.

Bad points:
 - Still bugs and many features missing, which after 5 years of development makes you "wtf?"
 - Damage is absolutely, positively the most rubbish thing in any racing game I saw. They really should not have done it!
 - Due to server overload the online and community parts are non functional at this time.

Neutral points:
 - A very large soundtrack. This means there are some very cool songs, but a lot of rubbish too. You can customize this though. Also it is return of the cheesy menu jazz.
 - 200/1000 cars are "premium", with the full interior design and breathtaking detail. 800 "standard" cars are lower detail, but still upgrade from GT4.
 - Car modifications are like old GT games, but only premium can have different wheels and other things.

Good points:
 - A gazzilion cars (1000)
 - The online community things are looking good
 - Most importantly: The developers promise updates "every week, every month" to iron out the problems, as well as bring additional content I presume.
 - Cars seem to have more realistic handling than GT4, this can mean some cars are impossible to drive (like a 600hp Shelby Cobra) and some cars drive like a dream as they are expected to (Lamborghini Murcielago for instance can powerslide easily).
 - The AI are intelligent and will race each other, as well as you. Also they will react based on your own driving. Some AI are more aggressive than others, trying to PIT manoeuvre you etc...
 - Top Gear track.
 - Difficulty can be changed dramatically with the driver options, things to help stop spinning out for new drivers etc - so all skill levels can play.

These are most things I picked up on with 2 days playing. What you guys think?

Is it worth the money?

I'm not sure whether I should buy it, nowadays so many new games come out that you don't have enough time to play through one fully and then a new one comes out...

Well there are 800 cars that are high quality, better than GT4 and so better quality than most PS3 racing games. There are 200 cars with super high quality that have interior views :P So depends how you look at it.

If you played the other Gran Turismo games a lot, then this is definitely worth your money. However if your new to the Gran Turismo series then I can't really tell you that you will like it, unless you are a general petrol head.

This is nothing like any other racing game. It contains so much content (rally racing, go karts, formula 1, touring cars, nascar and all the variations), however depending how you look at it.

I have not played F1 2011 or WRC 2010 (or whatever the latest F1/ rally games) so I cannot compare these, but if you want realistic handling and the ability to master a car then this is your game. If you like cars in general, like tuning them up, then this may be for you (there is hardly any external modifications). It is a precision racing game but has many options that can make racing easy for beginners.

PS3 only?

Something I wanted to know though, in NFS Shift, you didn't really have much reasons to buy more then 1 car in a tier because you could just mod it completely, when I do have time to race, I want to have a reason to drive other cars and experience a lot of them, also how does the licenced competition content such as WRC and NASCAR?

I'm also interested in driving the Formula 1 cars and the Red Bull X1, but I don't want to have to wait for 5-6 months to complete the game to drive it.

And how is the multiplayer structured?

In terms of the physics, I know that GT5 has the best driving physics ever on a console game, very close to PC simulators.

Do you mean the 800 other cars have no cockpit view?

Yes the 800 standard cars do not have in-cockpit view.

GT5 is the best SIM?

I call this one - Split screen gaming.

This one is "The Travis". I don't know if you ever heard that song by Travis. It went "Why does it always rain on me?". Well, this is the remix. "Why does it only rain in front of me?"

This one I have entitled the "Ten Eighty". Why? because it looks like a screenshot from the N64 game 1080' only with worse graphics.

This one I have fondly titled "The thunderbolt". It makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

This one I call the plain Jane. No description needed here, then.

And this one I call "What the f*ck?"

Again, self explanatory. And then when you couple that to tearing (see top pic) frame drops, bland awful graphics that look like they came from GT2 on the PSX and all of the multi player problems? - No, definitely, just no! (Message quoted from a friend from another forum)

How is the handling in the rain compared to other sims and racing games?

Lol Todor have you actually played the game? Experienced the framedrop for yourself? Maybe if a 1080p video of the screenshots you posted was available it would show how the problems you highlighted actually occur.

I have played the game on a friend of mine's PS3 with a wheel and I have to say the physics engine is bloody amazing. Sometimes, though, the graphics crap out. Just google. And also it takes a  bloody fuckload of time to load.

Yeah loading times are pretty long, even though I have it installed on the hard drive. Haven't noticed any drop in graphics quality or any of those bugs you posted yet though.
