Title: Computer memory [HELP!]
Post by: [NP]Monte Montague on November 28, 2010, 03:26:13 pm
So I bought some computer memory for a computer a week ago.
The information is below (taken from the sticker on the card)

ADATA 0706
PC2-5300-1288
256 MX64 250 DIMM
2GB DDR2 677 MHZ CL5

The problem is, I bought it from an eBay merchant, he has no more and I need more, but I cannot find it, I also am not sure if I do find one if it'd work with this same card, as the card before I had did not work with the new one (x3 512mb - 443hz ea)

Any help is appreciated.
This is kind of my last resort.

Any other DDR2 RAM is compatible with other ones.. just look for RAM that is the same speed as the other as otherwise they operate acording to the slowest.

I had this card and 3 512mb, 445hz ones, I put them all together and when I tried to turn it on it went "BEEP BEEP", so I took it at and kept the 2GB only.

Check your motherboard's manual for beep codes. Could've been that just one of the sticks were broken..

I doubt it, all of them work, but not all together.

This is my motherboard

Then most likely one of your RAM slots on your motherboard is faulty.

Hi InfernalCurse,

Not all RAM modules work with each other, even at the same speed! (depends on how the motherboard wants them to work) I try to make sure that they are from the same manufacturer, and even then I try to make sure they are all single or double sided (chips on both sides or just the 1 side) having single and double sided chips together is not a healthy option!

Hope That Helps!

Happy Gaming

Motherboards can only support a pre-desiganted amount of RAM. If you turn the PC on and there is constant beeping, then your motherboard cannot support the amount of RAM you have added in.

Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*

32 bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
Assuming you are running a 32-bit system.
Seeing as the specification makes what I said before irrelevant on some levels, the only thing that remains is what Icy has already stated - one of your memory slots is faulty. I have had the same error as you have in an older build of mine. How did I fix it? I plugged a spare 512mb RAM chip into the slot to cancel it out on startup, leaving me with one 2GB chip in one slot, and a 512MB chip to cancel out the other.

It's as branded PCs are very capricious about the components you put in them. Sometimes the bios is made to work only with certain things that the company sells you for a premium. In short, build yourself a new one.

So I have 1 from here, exact kind
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2GB-Adata-DDR2-533-2-G-GB-PC2-4200-DDR-PC-4300-DIMM-RAM-/290492557542?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item43a2b4a8e6 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2GB-Adata-DDR2-533-2-G-GB-PC2-4200-DDR-PC-4300-DIMM-RAM-/290492557542?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item43a2b4a8e6)

If I purchase another will my computer be able to handle 4gb? or is that the maximum?

XP Service Pack 3 or higher, supports 4GB and higher. It would work.

The reason your old setup of memory didn't work : 2GB, and 2 of 512 MB, is probably because 2GB ussually doesn't co operate with 512MB due to the difference in memory.. Atleast, thats what i had. 1GB does cooperate with 2GB. 512 MB didn't, with my old pc atleast.
