Title: help with domain thing :P
Post by: Hyper on August 01, 2007, 11:02:37 pm
Hey guys, I made some Forum and I got a domain name etc.
but the url always stays the same when I click on other topics, for example: the real name of the forum is www.test.smfforfree3.com. when I click on a topic there you get something long like http://test.smfforfree3.com/index.php/topic,1.0.html just like on these Argonath forums. But when I got my own Domain name and I click on the topic the url stays the same. so it would not be www.test.com/index.php/topic,1.0.html but just www.test.com...
can anybody help me with that?

Thanks a lot,
Hyper

If this is not a co.nr (free) domain and it is a com/net/org/etc. domain, what you probably didn't do was redirect the domain name to the proper name servers. (Which in this case you don't have - because you didn't buy hosting, you just bought a forum).  So, what you should do is either buy a hosting and put your forum on it, get a free hosting company and make a link to the forums - but then it would show test.smfforfree3.com etc...

Well, I hope this helped.

Cheers,
-[AV]xcasio :)

Erm yeh what you need to do is change the name servers.

Go to your hosting site, I think in the case its just smfforfree, and find the domain name servers.
In your Domain Site, change your name servers to the the ones provided by smfforfree.

This can take up to 48 hours so dont think it hasnt worked :]

It will have worked when you see a new folder in your hosting site's File Manager.
You then have to copy the files from your old folder into the new one that has appeared.

Hope it makes sense lol

Oh and turn all Web Forwarding Off,
there is no need to manually forward the site as the Name Servers Act as the forwarding part.

uhm...  I'm not that smart :P
I've just got a free Forum from smfforfree3.com and I 'bought' my domain name.
What do you mean with Go to your hosting site, I think in the case its just smfforfree, and find the domain name servers. do you mean I have to go to http://www.smfforfree.com/ ? And with In your Domain Site, change your name servers to the the ones provided by smfforfree. you mean www.test.com? do I have to change it in the AC panel??  :conf:

As you see I'm not that smart :P :D

Let me try to explain you in a simple way... most guys here do not know wht you or they are talking about.  :D

If you buy a domain name, and there is no hosting it usually 'mirrors' the site you redirect to.

The forum is test.smfforfree.com  and your domain is www.hypercube.com

whatever the URL of test.smfforfree.com is will be changed in the browser to www.hypercube.com because the real domain is 'masked'
This is why you will not see a change in the URL.

rriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.... :conf:
OK, so this means it's not possible to have to long url thing? But it's a little bit same as Argonath Forum. It's from smfforfree and the domain name is www.argonathrpg.com/forum .... And if you click on topics there the url DOES change to something like http://www.argonathrpg.com/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=6249.0;num_replies=10.

How is that possible then?
Posted on: August 02, 2007, 10:38:58 AM
Does it have anything to do with cloaking? :conf:
Posted on: August 02, 2007, 10:40:38 AM
And I dont get the 'Masked' thing either

That's what I've been saying...

smfforfree does not provide name servers, and now you're using the company's you bought the domain(s) from   name servers, by using the redirection function to the forum address.

But how does Argonath do it then!?!? They are using the same Forum (smfforfree) and YES it IS free.

Yes it has to do with cloaking. That is because smfforfree does not want to show the complete URL which will be something like www.smfforfree.com/users/hypercube/forum.........  ;)

We have downloaded SMF to our website, and use the full forum.

I'm pretty sure that Argonath host's this forum on their own hosting server or buy hosting.

Argonath bought/got hosting, which they probably pay for.

You bought a domain, and you didn't buy hosting, you just want to use the free smf forum. If I were you, I'd just redirect that domain to the free forums link..

By the way, if you do buy hosting, you can download SMF here. (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/)  (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/).

If you have bought hosting, you will have an FTP access to your website. If you have this, you can use it to upload. If you do not have FTP access to a website, do not bother until later and first just play with the smfforfree forum.

such as not putting your username in your host etc

Once you get into the forum, are you sure you're either in the "htdocs" or "public_html" folder? (depending on the OS the server uses)

do you mean httpdosc? and the public_html folder I cant find. The only folder I can make a 'forum' folder in is httpdocs and httpsdocs...

Ask your webhost for the MySQL server settings.

Ok, that's what I was asking, yes, it supposed to be httpdocs..

Thanks for all your help xcasio. I will give you some money in-game. After I know the SQL settings thing I'm done.

Your welcome, no need for money :).

The SQL settings are probably:

Username = Your ftp username
Password = Your password
Server = localhost
Database = I'm not sure if you need to create one, you probably do.

By the way, instead of going through this process, you can auto install everything *IF* you have fantastico in cPanel and If you even have cpanel.  Try going to www. hosting site name .something :2082, and check if it work's.

I've added you on MSN, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Always happy to help,
-xcasio :)
