Hi HeyDude,
If you are looking for a simple method to input text into your design, have you considered trying Microsoft Word?
I know at first glance you might be thinking it is a little odd to be using a word processor, but if you think about it, you can edit any of the WordArt to however you want it.
This is the easiest method I can think of. When you start thinking about putting GIMP or even Photoshop into the mix, I think you are making more hard work for yourself.
Give Microsoft Word (if you have it) or Microsoft Publisher a try to begin with and check out the results. After you have tried with these, you can then (If you want to experiment a little more ) Try GIMP. I wouldn't recommend that you use Photoshop for something like this, as it isn't necessary. A bit like shooting a fly with a canon so to speak.
Good Luck & Happy Gaming!
