Title: Trolling; an explanation
Post by: Brad. on February 06, 2011, 11:57:56 am
Something thats been pissing off me, and quite a few other people;

None of you know what trolling is, you all think Daco is a troll, when hes just an idiot who could name every meme but probably wouldn't last 12 seconds in civilised conversation.

Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through acting smart, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other idiocy. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.

"Trolling" isn't just being a wanker. Intentionally insulting/libelous statements are "flaming".

The next time I see someone call Daco a troll, or any one else saying "omgtroll" because they point out a proper flaw in something, I will remove heads.

Also, I'm making a "moaning; an explanation" topic tonight, so you guys will stop calling everyone moaners whenever they type a bloody message

Trolling is a bit 'good' when it provides entertaining value,as long as it does not offend anyone.Or I should call the aforementioned sentence just a joke. However, most people want to harass someone when they are trolling and all those things that are mentioned on the OP.But still,I don't really believe Argonath has a 'trolling' problem, judging by the high administration measures taken against it,on the forums,in the servers, everywhere.

WOW. I was going to make a post about this.

Throughout my time in this beloved community, I have witnessed many actions and events; from hacking attempts to loving attempts. However the one event, or one may call it action, which has come to my eye lately is trolling. What, you may ask, is this? In response to your question, I can only give you an internet definition:

Quote
Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.

From that definition you may chuckle to yourself and say, "What a load of bollocks. It's all for the laughs!" However there are times when this so called trolling gets out of hand and people throw the word around to define any type of rule breaking on the forum. In some cases you may be correct and if this is the case, I oblidge you to report the offender so that full actions can be taken by the forum administration team.

On the other hand, as I mentioned before, the word "troll" and "trolling" gets thrown around like a frizbee within this community. I fail to see where half the "trolling" on the forum comes from. Within this community there are several people who like to think themselves as trolls because they can uplift information from such websites as Google Images and 4chan. Just because one posts an image that says, "Shut the f**k up" does not mean they are troll, more of a cunt for being a copypasta.

While being muted for a month I had time to watch and review the actions of certain people on the forum and several topics and people came to my attention. One of these was the Gvardia topic where a supposed troll who goes by the name of RafaDK was trying to "piss off" the members of Gvardia. In return, Antonio and "THE RETIRED TROLL" MetalLuigiX embraced him in an argument which turned out to be newfags arguing with newfags. This behaviour was definately not acceptable and as a result of this, warnings and moderations were handed out to the parties invlved. This is a good example of why the so called "trolling" cannot take place on the Argonath Forum as the forum moderation team is so strong.

There are several actions which one sees while lurking on the forum which have been directly lifted from the possibly infamous website, 4chan. They are not cool and theye are as follows:

">implying I am trolling" - This does not work here as text does not automatically get turned to green requiring extra effort.

"Posting images to represet words" - Many images posted are as old as the internet and should be avoided when possible.

"The word fag.got" - This word is commonly misused and is actually a delicious dish usually served with chips.

"Noany" - This is used too much and is a mockery of the owner.

"Orly" - This word is NOT cool.

So please think before you throw the word around.

Regards,
Ollie

I didnt post this for a reaction, I posted this because none of you know what trolling is.  You all think that posting fourty memes a second, and flaming people in a "humerous" way is trolling, you are all far from it.  People think Araatus troll, when lets be honest, none of us think we do, we just have a laugh, and have some private jokes, try telling me no one else in Argo has any private jokes.  If you wanted to see trolling, about three people in this community could do it, but you all think Daco, Maxy, Panda, me, Elmartu and Andy are trolls, when we are far far far from it.

You could, but then they could counter with calling you a troll, then your troll would be unsuccessfull.

You could, but then they could counter with calling you a troll, then your troll would be unsuccessfull.

You can counter it by denying it and calling him a troll again, and if he calls you a troll again, repeat the cycle, and the fact that you're still calling him a troll will troll him.

Trolls do not exist. Sadly, we have "sensitive" people on the internet that cannot stand a single remark. Guess what goes next.
"Trolls" would be people with too much free time.

However, trolling is generally, an every-man's virtue.

I agree with Brad. Acting like a smart-ass kid that is cool and doesn't listen to his parents is not trolling. I recall only one actual trolling, which didn't make the troll look like and idiot. Most trolls are attention whores and only want to be called trolls.

Also, using 4chan style replies isn't trolling. Including >implying and replying with images showing face expressions.

Sarcastically written.

Every once in a while people tend to cause unnecessary arguments. You'll know what I'm talking about. That exact situation is perceived as trolling, which is incorrect.

btwHe wasn't a troll, he was just a dick.
This pretty much, but instead of calling him a dick, he was purposely being an 'badass' to everyone, not necessarily trolling at all.  Being a troll means your object (Virtually) is to get a rise out of someone, but you can also do that without trolling or without the intent to troll, so of course there will be confusion on what act you do to become a troll... and also in my opinion, if you go all out and try to attn. whore everyone, your not really a troll, just attention whore and thats it.

It's not because some people with an obvious need of attention want to provoke or insult others on an online community, that it is a word. Wikipedia isn't a dictionary, probably someone looking for attention created that topic aswell.
Really, do you find yourself 'cool' because you insult someone? Then you have neither psychological issues or you're in need of better parents that can give you the wanted attention.
This isn't meant to you Daco, but to those that do take part in this childish act of so called  'trolling'.
