Title: Redirect to advertisement site issue (Especially with google search)
Post by: Trobby888 on February 08, 2011, 12:47:08 am
Lately, after installing my Win7 x64 Ultimate, I have noticed that whenever I do a google search, sometimes, after clicking a search result, it would randomly redirect me to a irrelevant website (Usually an advertisement site). This can happen with almost any search result (Even with Wikipedia pages!!). It is, indeed getting very frustrating, and I don't think that any of this is normal at all.

But I have tried numerous ways to try and remove the problem. I did a full A/V scan with AVG, did a full scan with Windows Defender and with Spybot (And used the immunization feature) and even used the program Anti-Malware (Introduced by Kitsune) to attempt to get rid of this crap (I obviously did update all the definitions before doing the scan work). I even tried uninstalling and disabling some suspicious programs such as Ask Toolbar and certain "Google Update" plugins. Although each of these techniques did find quite a few Malwares and removed them, the original problem still persists!!! I am still getting redirects from google search results (And sometimes in other websites including this Argo forum) like how I did before doing the scanning.

I need help on figuring out how to stop this stupid redirect issue. Does anyone else have this issue or is it only me?

Try Malwarebytes.

its adware that most likely came with a download you just got. It will open random sites, usually directed to ads etc. Look for it in your task manager running processes window, you will find it.

it does sound like something virus/malware related. but, it could be something (very) wrong with your internet settings. because usually, viruses do things on their own, instead of waiting for you to do something first.

only thing i could recommend is to try different anti-virus/malware programs, or if you want, try downloading a different browser and see if the problem remains
(recommend Chrome, or Firefox :) )

@ Squeak

As I have mentioned in my first post, I did try that and it didn't work. And if you're talking about the purchased versions, I'm not willing to pay money to fix my problem.

@ SafetyMoose

Unless if anti-spyware programs are really that crappy, that would've already been found by Windows Defender.

Here is a list of my processors running in windows. Which process looks very suspicious to you?

@ Neave

I use Mozilla Firefox.

Dunno then, I had the exact same thing and MalwareBytes picked it up.

@ Neave

I use Mozilla Firefox.

then try Chrome for the sake of seeing if Mozilla is the only affected program..

I just noticed that it's starting to happen on my laptop too (Although I used firefox as the test). It has never happened to it before in the past.

Oh yea, and this doesn't happen all the time. It happens around every second wave of searches that I place. But that is still very frequent and frustrating.

**Edit**

Just tried on IE. It's happening there too.  :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Hello Trobby.

Could you post a screen of all of the current processes running. By clicking show processes from all users just for it to show more running.

By the way have you tried using a program called hijackthis? It is free and you can download an installable or executable only versions.

**Edit**

Here is an example of one of those stupid redirects that I'm getting. This was what I got when I clicked the first search result for the Hijackthis Program.

You've been watching too much porn Mr. FBI man. As previously suggested just use something like Malwarebytes or Spybot.

Tried that. They did find some malware, but even after removing them, the problem still persists.

Have you tried checking if there is a proxy setup in the internet explorer settings?

Try going to safe mode without Network Support and then scan it again with Malwarebytes...
