Title: Help me buy a new monitor
Post by: Gimli on February 12, 2011, 07:02:37 pm
Hey guys,

If any of you is technologically competent in looking at monitor specs, please tell me what you think about this one: http://www.lg.com/us/computer-products/monitors/LG-led-monitor-M2780D-PU.jsp (http://www.lg.com/us/computer-products/monitors/LG-led-monitor-M2780D-PU.jsp)

Thanks

Well, it all depends on your needs. If you're a graphics designer or work a lot around on photos or other graphics, go for a monitor which has an IPS -panel instead. If you play a lot and enjoy watching lots of movies, try to search for a 120Hz display instead of the normal 60Hz. Obviously, if the budget is low - you should consider neither from the ones mentioned earlier. :D

LGs tend to be too bright and to not have very realistic colours. I'd think something along the lines of Samsung or Dell for monitors depending on your price range. TBH as it doesn't have a larger resolution you might as well get a 24" and save a lot of money.

i've never really heard of any brand as being "too bright"
but, for allpurpose (gaming included) i'd defiantly recommend
(in order of most expensive, to least)
theyre all LED backlit. which is the best way to go nowadays

all of them have t he best balance of size, price, and design :)

ASUS ML248H 24" Full HD Swivel & Tilt Adjustable LED 1080p with HDMI $209 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236111&Tpk=ML248H)

AOC E2343F 23" 1080p DVI $179 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160054)

Asus ML228H 21.5" Full HD LED 1080p with HDMI $159 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236099)

Are you looking for a 'matt' kind of screen, or more shiny?

I recommend AOC, good prices for good items  ;)

Hi Gimli!

Speaking from experience, the bigger you can go without breaking the bank the better.

After you've decided what amount you want, make sure its got all the connectors you want, whether thats DVI, VGA, Display port or HDMI.

Depending on your equipment you might want to have a look at the new display port monitors as that makes your new monitor future proof and in keeping with the current trends. If you are less bothered about this any DVI connection would be fine.

Have you thought about a dual monitor setup?
Believe it or not this kind of setup is very fashionable - Amongst my 7 monitors 4 of them are on a dual monitor setup. This means I have more space to put a youtube video on screen with a laptop whilst using msn on another.

Another point worth mentioning is your space, there are monitors by samsung that are extremely thin, perhaps these would be better if you do not have much desk space?

Refresh Rate
What about your refresh rate? have you considered a 120hz monitor?

The smoothness you get from a monitor at 120hz is remarkable, it really does make the viewing experience nicer when watching films or playing games, for the little extra price they cost, they are worth it in my opinion.

As for brand, My three best choices would be HP followed by LG followed by Samsung. They seem to be the best for value, performance and size.

As already mentioned, be sure to know what kind of monitor would be best in your room. A gloss finish looks nice but gets finger prints easily and when infront of light sources can make it horrible. A matte finish would be better in this situation, however if your looking for looks over everything else glossy is the way to go.

Bear in mind that if you buy a glossy one then move the monitor, you can purchase gloss screen protectors I think they are called. These basically turn the glossy screen into a matte one, but in my opinon matte is the way to go for the pratical bonuses it gives.

As for the monitor you pointed out, I saw no problems with it :) Even better if its in a bedroom as it means you can use it as a TV too! Does that mean it comes with a remote? Not many monitors have a handy option like that!

Keep me posted and good luck with your purchase!

Regards, DellStorm

Good monitor brands are:

Acer
AOC
LG
ASUS
Phillips
Viewsonic
SCEPTRE
Dell
Samsung

I've searched between all those brands, they seem to be quality.

As you see, you have a huge choice between those brands, i'd recomend you search them all and compare...
the one that comes at the best price and features, buy it.

I have an Acer 18,5", it is extremely good monitor, it's been a year i have it, when i brought this monitor, it was costing the same price of a 15,6", no probs, no complaints, this monitor never gave me a headache :D
