Title: Charles's roleplay guide
Post by: Charles_Carter on February 19, 2011, 09:28:00 am
Charles RP guide

This guide is to improve the quality of role play in the game, although this is only Basic RP in this guide.

Driving Guide:

Basic Driving Rules:
Seeing as the game is set in America you must drive on the right hand side of the road, if your being chased by the police you may be creative in your routes to avoid them. Never Car kill someone as this is a kick able offense, this is parking your vehicle on top of another player to kill them.
If you drive normally like this good on you, at T junctions please give way to oncoming cars if you are pulling on to the base of the T, ((a minor road pulling onto the main road)) and X roads try to be polite and let others go first, you don't have to stop for red lights as they are usually UN-synced but if you wish you may do as you please.

Drive by's:
Drivers of the vehicle, please never use the Q or E buttons when looking left and right, use your look controls with mouse or joy pad instead, if you are caught doing a driver drive-by you maybe admin jailed or temp banned. Passengers can perform drive by's, when they perform a drive by they should should demonstrate they are preparing to do it with a few /me actions (e.g. /me loads up an SMG then /me opens/Smashes the window and leans out holding the SMG).

Carjacking:
Carjacking is allowed in the server, but you must at least RP the jacking in some way i wouldn't suggest doing /me commands as there is an animation for carjacking but try to do some form of verbal communication such as /l Sorry but i need this!
But you could perform it in a different way if someone locks the car door i will demonstrate the idea bellow:-
/me waves the car over
((the car pulls over))
/me taps on the window
*the driver off the car winds down the window.*
/me pulls a gun out of his jacket
/me sticks the gun into the drivers neck
/l Get out the f**king car. Now!

In this way they are forced to get out the vehicle.

Parking guide:
Alot of people decide to park in the middle of the road, which is pure laziness and an annoyance to others, when you need to park your car, slowly pull in to your right until your cars right hand tires are all on the pavement, in the event that there is a designated parking space available you may reverse or move forward into the spot and keep the car straight when parking. Never park on the opposite side of the road to the side you drive on, or Park on corners.

A cop pulls you over:
If you have nothing to hide you should pull over as requested and follow the instructions of the Police officer and you should get away with very little haste, different officers may do different checks.

Character interaction

Meeting someone new:
Just because you see someones name above their head does not necessarily mean you know their name!
To learn someones name in character simply engage in conversation until you learn their name, if they tell you a false name that's the one you have to call them by, an example of learning someones name is below:-

/l Hello, how are you?
*person A says: not bad thank you and you?
/l I'm good thanks, weather could be better though
*Person A laughs
*Person A says: i suppose your right, whats your name?
/l oh my names Charles, and yours?
*Person A nods
*Person A says: My names Person B
/l oh nice to meet you Person B

Speaking in a foreign language
This server is an English speaking only server, naturally everyone in America can speak English but some people can communicate in different languages in RP situations demonstrated in the following way:-
/l [Rus] Dimitri, i don't trust these people
*Dimitri says: [Rus] Relax, they might be Chinese but they are cool.
*Triad A says: [Chinese] What did he just say?
*Triad B says: [Chinese] Relax!
*Triad B says: OK, shall we do business now
*Dimitri says: yes lets get this over with.

You maybe able to speak another language as long as you have a reason why you can, e.g. Degree in Spanish language or Hispanic ethnicity. But don't naturally assume you can speak all languages.

Gang interactions:
Naturally a person in a group of people will feel invincible as long as he remains close to that group of people, if you are challenged by a gang it is recommended that you don't try to pull off a Rambo as this will cause other players to frown upon you in the future
Whether you're a cop, civilian or another Gang being challenged by a large group of people you should try act intimidated:-
((a large group of African American gang members surround me))
/l Wha..what do you want?
*Person A laughs
*Person B says: listen to this fake ass niggah cower!
*Person C says: i know its pathetic ain't it?
*Person A says: Give me your wallet Punk!
/l oh...OK but please...don't hurt me!
/me takes out a wallet and hands it to person A
/send Person A $X
*Person A grin's
*Person A says: thanks bad girl, now f**k off!
((I runs away))

Later however i come back with 4 gang members with me:

/s Ey bad girls who's gonna cower now?
Person A says: Oh shit!
((Person A makes a run for it))
Person B shakes in fear
((Person C tries to run and Hide))

This is to demonstrate if your outnumbered you should act this way.

Interacting with the Police/Paramedics:

First things first, Do not prank call the Police/Paramedic Department with stupid comments, only call if you need help, if you know the criminals you may say their names but if you do not then just explain what they look like heres an example of a 911 call:

/call 911
EMERGENCY:Thank you for calling Argonath Emergency services
EMERGENCY:Which Service do you require: Police,Fireman or paramedic
Police
Police HQ:Thank you for calling the Argonath RPG police Department
Police HQ:Please provide us with a short description of the situation
A man wearing a white hoody just carjacked me and drove off
Police HQ:Thank you this should help our officers
Police HQ:If you do not know the offender's name type no otherwise type his/her name
no

Remain were you are and a cop/paramedic should turn up to help.

Paramedic's
You're injured and a Paramedic turns up to help:

Try to express were you have been injured so the paramedic can help you appropriately:-
*Paramedic says: Sir? where are you hurt?
/l I got shot in the chest
*Paramedic says: Sir can you lift your shirt up so i can see the wound?
/me lifts his shirt up to reveal a bullet wound on his upper right chest

Paramedic's and Doctor's I expect you to heal the following in the ways suggested:-

Broken arm's/leg's:

/me Applies a stain to the broken arm/leg.
/me Wraps a bandage around the broken arm/leg.
/me Takes out a mold for preparing a cast.
/me )) A few minutes pass.
/me applies the cast around the broken arm/leg.

Bullet/glass wounds:

/me Takes out a scalpel and cuts neatly over the wound. ((not required for glass))
/me Takes out a pair of Medical Tweezers.
/me Carefully removes the Bullet/glass from the wound.
/me takes out a bottle of disinfectant and puts a few droplets on some wool.
/me pads the wound with the wool.
/me takes out a sutures kit.
/me Carefully stitches up the wound.
/me takes out a set of bandages
/me carefully wraps the bandage around the wound and secures it.

Cuts:
/me takes out a bottle of disinfectant and puts a few droplets on some wool.
/me pads the wound with the wool.
/me takes out a sutures kit.
/me Carefully stitches up the wound.
/me takes out a set of bandages
/me carefully wraps the bandage around the wound and secures it.

Bruises and Bumps:
/me Takes out an icepack
/me presses the pack onto the wound or /me gives the icepack to the patient.

That's all I can think up right now.

Being arrested by the Cops:

If you are tackled by a cop you may attempt to break free:
/me struggles to break free.
((if the cop does not respond within 5 seconds))
/me breaks free of the cop's grip.

If you are arrested at gunpoint, remember the cop can not aim at you while applying the cuff's so again you can attempt to break free:-

*Cop A places his gun in his Holster
*Cop A takes out a pair of cuffs from his Utility belt
*Cop A takes Charles's left arm and places it behind his back
/me attempts to elbow the Cop with his right elbow.
*Cop A grabs Charles arm with his free hand and places it behind his back.
/me Struggles to break free
*Cop A Resists Charles's struggling and manages to apply the Cuffs to his wrists

If you have another cop aiming at you during the process don't attempt to break free unless he lowers his gun, once cuffs have been placed on your hands you may not open car doors or run/sprint/jump you may however walk or crouch move.
Note:Once you are cuffed or have done /GU or /hail you are a surrendered suspect, after that it is against rules to try to escape EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T /GU BUT HAVE /hailed or cuffed

END

Well I believe i covered everything worth covering. If there is anything else you feel needs adding don't hesitate to contact me on the forums
thank you for reading this guide!

This guide was created by me myself and nobody else, if you wish to use this guide please contact me and i will rarely refuse to allow it, however if you do use this guide please give me credit.

Note:I'm still not sure if it belongs in general or in speaker box since this may affect other Argo servers too but again i have never been on any Argo server except SA:MP

Thanks for spending your time on something like this.
It's appreciated. I'll read through it right now.

Just a tip: Once you start a "/me" line; use a little letter, and not a big capital.
* Que Jumps out.
* Que jumps out.

You see the difference? It's not very important in role-play, yet it is a very important rule in whatever language you're writing in.  :)

Driver drive-by is limited and can be done only on cop bike(HPV1000). Drive-by as passenger is allowed only if there is a RP reason.

Carjacking:
Carjacking is allowed in the server, but you must at least RP the jacking in some way i wouldn't suggest doing /me commands as there is an animation for carjacking but try to do some form of verbal communication such as /l Sorry but i need this!

In this way they are forced to get out the vehicle.
Carjacking is against the rules. And forcing RP is not allowed, unless all sides agree with this RP scenario.

Speaking in a foreign language
This server is an English speaking only server, naturally everyone in America can speak English but some people can communicate in different languages in RP situations demonstrated in the following way:-

*Dimitri says: yes lets get this over with.

You maybe able to speak another language as long as you have a reason why you can, e.g. Degree in Spanish language or Hispanic ethnicity. But don't naturally assume you can speak all languages.
Foreign languages are allowed only in local chat, PM and CB, if every person in area/channel agrees.

Paramedic's and Doctor's I expect you to heal the following in the ways suggested:-

Broken arm's/leg's:

/me Applies a stain to the broken arm/leg.

Bruises and Bumps:

Not everyone is good at English and knows those medical words.

Being arrested by the Cops:

If you are tackled by a cop you may attempt to break free:
/me struggles to break free.
((if the cop does not respond within 5 seconds))
/me breaks free of the cop's grip.
Running after surrendering will be admin punished.
Cop not responding within 5 seconds? Not all of us are fast typers, shouldn't be used.

Charles RP guide

*the driver off the car winds down the window.*
/me pulls a gun out of his jacket
/me sticks the gun into the drivers neck
/l Get out the f**king car. Now!

In this way they are forced to get out the vehicle.

You can never force a player to give away his car before he had the chance to defend himself.
That's a pure example of forcing role-play, which is clearly not allowed here on Argonath.

Not everyone is good at English and knows those medical words.

The topic was an example of how you can handle a role-play situation, and not the only way.

Running after surrendering will be admin punished.
Cop not responding within 5 seconds? Not all of us are fast typers, shouldn't be used.

I was about to write that myself. Once you decide to give up (which you have usually done when a cop tackles you down) and as you stated yourself "Being arrested by the Cops", you cannot run away. Yet if you manage to handle the situation to a certain level where you didn't give up in any way, I see no issues with running away. But then the officer has to agree with that as well.

Another thing that is very important in role-play is to have fun. It's not always about winning or shooting the other guy. Role-play has far more alternatives when it comes to a role-play situation. Lets say I'm role-playing against a group of people, that group of people is armed and has claimed themselves as a dangerous mafia. Something you most likely want to do here, is to act very though and basically kill all of them right? That's how many people think. Instead of doing that, think about it in another perspective; you're alone, they're five. They have guns, you got fists. What can YOU do against these people?

What you can do here, is to listen to what they want to say, even if it might not go your way; you should be listening to what they want and enjoy the role-play they are setting up with you, or you could either take off running towards a crowded place where cops usually hang out at.
Of course, you can start punching them with your fists, but that will not go down they way you or them want to.
Sometimes, I'd advice you as a role-player to think realistic, even if you did not want this to happen to you - it can also be a funny experience.

Another thing that is important for me, when I role-play with my buddies or someone new IS to let the other guy have a chance in what they're doing. If we're arguing, or if we're frankly having a dramatic situation while we're role-playing.. I usually give them a chance to defend themselves with either a reply or with action. A good example of this is when you're having a fight, lets say: one versus one. Here's something that I've seen people do multiple times;

* Que takes a step back, releasing a quick elbow with his right arm.
*BLAM BLAM* People start to punch, right?

What I usually do in these kind of situation is not to start punching him, because I find it extremely inappropriate to do so. Instead, I'll wait for him to reply, because the other player always has a chance to evade the punch or dodge from it. If he decides to do a move instead, lets say start to punch me; then I'll do the same. But in this way you give the other player a chance to be a part of the role-play scenario you're setting up. You might loose a little health, but it's far more even to do so. So what I meant was:

* Que takes a step back, releasing a quick elbow with his right arm.
* Waits instead of punching him *
* Player dodges while he keeps his eyes on Que.
Player: /L Hey! What are you doing!?

The /me command is also a very good role-play command that is making the role-play far more funnier, and can also make it more detailed.
But it can also be over-used. What I mean is - You don't have to use /me when you're exiting a vehicle, or when you agree to something.
Let me give you some example of /me that you do not have to do.

* Player walks out of the car.
Why? Because it's pretty clear that you exit a car on your screen, the other players will notice that as well.

* Player is down (down in a common slang directed way, means basically that you're agreeing to do what the other guy wants to do)
Why? When you use /me, it's something that you do (verb) example: /me twists the key, turning the engine on. The more appropriate way to answer the other guy is to use the local chat and express your opinion.
"Yeah, I'm down!"

I will post some other examples and tips if anyone is interested of more.
Sincerely, Que.

Bad guide IMHO, this is more of a "some things that aren't realistic and annoy me when I see others doing, so I write a guide topic to make them stop doing it" topic - not a guide. And you are stating false facts.

You're using brackets in a forum post.
/me over-usage (includes "to not pull gun out of ass" or any other "RP" argument) is not the best way to role-play.
Carjacking is NOT allowed.
Calling someone's name even if you do not "know" him is not "non-RP".
Assuming that the in-game nickname is/has to be same as your role-played character's name.
Speaking foreign while typing it in English? Then you will complain about someone being non-RP and understanding you. If you want to play an accent, put in a few twisted or foreign words, like "Adios, mang! See you soon"
You're promoting provoking in your example about group interactions.
Describing a player's look while not stating his in-game ID or nickname when calling 911 will not get anyone caught. Cops will not stop every player just to check how they look. There are players that use custom skin mods that change appearance and the person's look will differ.
You're implying the only proper way to take care of people as medic is what the medic would do in real life.
Trying to break free from cops is futile. You can't run away after surrendering anyway, this is a RULE. You cannot "fake" surrendering in any way.

There is nothing to thank him about. You can't guide people on how to roleplay with the (( )) bullshit and /em etc. People will RP how they like.

Jeez, some people around here.
Every different person has his style of Roleplaying. For example, Charles has his own.He is exploiting that to the public.Mostly I use (( )) when I am saying something that is not releated to the discussion I am having, like (( brb )).

Here we go again...

Honestly, if I were to encounter some of these over-the-top-exaggeration-of-roleplay roleplayers, every time I was going to pull out a gun, I'd totally do /me pulls a gun out of his ass

I've done it quite a few times actually... it was enough to make them understand.
When will people realize that we don't have to roleplay the same way as others?
We don't live all the same way, do we?

I have lunch at 1 PM, you could have an hour before...
You use brackets and I don't.

And, in the end, we all get along, right?

The ONLY guide we need for roleplay is:
Use /me to type out actions you're doing; use /em to type out stuff that is happening around you; use /l to talk in local chat, use /s to shout, use /m in a police vehicle to shout in the megaphone.
There, that's it.

As long as we roleplay within the rules, we're all fine and dandy.
Btw, you can't escape from cops after surrendering, one way or another.
