Of course you have to visit the Empire State building whiles its up there.
Ground Zero would also be on the must see list.
what I wouldreally recommend in the Museum of Natural History, they have great displays.

If you are smart, buy a public transport pass so you can travel by subway and bus anywhere you want.
Take a bus that goes through Harlem and the Bronx and see if you have the balls to get out of the bus or not.

The Korean district is pretty funny, you will not see any English signs.

Play a lot of IV:MP / GTA:IV and see if it is familiar.

They have a "New York Pass" which give you access to multiple buildings, historical areas, transports, guides, etc. to a cheap prize.

Quote from there website:
Quote
    * Free entry to over 55 attractions – Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, New York Skyride, Madame Tussaud’s, Circle Line River Cruise, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, NBC Studio Tours, Top of the Rockâ„¢ Observation Deck, Uncle Sam's Hamilton Financial Tour & many others
    * Free 176 page guidebook in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, containing hours of operation, maps and directions to every tourist attraction, shop and restaurant included in New York Pass
    * Line skipping privileges – As a New York Pass holder you are entitled to fast track entry to some of the New York City’s busiest attractions
    * Additional Package option available – You can use our Pass & Hop on – Hop off Bus Packages for the ultimate New York sightseeing experience, more >>
    * Over $1000 worth of entrance fees – that’s how much it would cost if you visited all the attractions that New York Pass grants entrance to - without using the New York Pass. That doesn’t even include the additional discounts you receive for having a NY Pass!
    * Many special offers and benefits – apart from entry to attractions you also get great offers on theatre tickets, entry to special exhibitions, audio tours & discounts on shopping in Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, and much more.
    * 100% Risk Free, Money Back Guarantee – New York Pass insurance gives you extra comfort in case your travel plans change, offering refund on non-used Passes, more >>

So all these tourist attractions is already planned to visit!

What i hope for here are some tips for some "none tourist" areas or places to visit, restaurant, mall, etc that is worth to make a visit at!

As Gandalf has said, check out the Empire State Building!

I've had the chance to see the beautiful skyline of New York City when I went on Vacation last September.

I also recommend Central Park.. it's surreal

Go visit the South Bronx and Brownsville, Brooklyn at night, I have heard from extremely reliable sources that it's really beautiful at night. Bring your white Jordans for a comfortable walk and your expensive digital camera to catch those amazing shots of nice things that probably is out there. At night. Maybe you'll run in to Mash Out Posse?

Some tips...

1. Go to Ellis Island at the end of the day. When you go backto New York during sunset the view is breathtaking.

2. Next to Macy's on 34th there is a shopping mall. At the top they have a food court where you can try different kinds of food at a relatively cheap price. Try Japanese (really cheap in the USA) and Mexican

3. If you want to impress a girlfriend or have one expensive dinner, make a reservation at the Marriot Turning Restaurant. It is at the top of a skyscraper and while you eat it revolves, showing you all of the city.

4. Take a stroll down Park Lane. If you see a small car, its probably a Merceded 600.

5. Get a shopping list from your friend to earn back your trip. Remove all packings and take fake receipts.

Of malls visit the Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall, it's on East Garden City (if it stills exists)
Worth a visit to a Dunkin' Donuts store ;)
Also you would love to camp on the City Center and see the taxi drivers fighting for the "spots"... :hah:

Dependant on whether you wish to sell your kidneys or not, I'd advise avoiding Brooklyn.

I've heard the Queensbridge housing projects are just magnificent at night. As Tiderman suggested, you should bring a pair of new shoes, a digital camera, and your cellphone to document your excursion. I would also suggest bringing a flashlight to allow you to navigate the outside in the dark and to let all of the residents know that you're there to enjoy the scenery at night. You should also try and make your way into a building and camp out in the stairwell overnight if you have the supplies to do so. Have a good trip.

Lol, first thing I would visit in New York would be Brooklyn. No, not cause of kidneys, but cause of the original New York atmosphere.

Yeah the heat here has been intense during the past few days. You picked a good time to visit.

Avoid touching the banisters in subways. Wash often.
