Title: How to remove lag and gain FPS on GTA IV
Post by: Devin on April 13, 2011, 11:57:20 am
I was taking a look on the IV:MP Forums and found this post which has proved to be very useful.

Please don't delete this might be usefull for others!

UPDATE BETA 1.0

IMPORTANT: REMOVE ANY MODS, GRAPHIC MODS, CAR MODS, PED MODS, ECT. IT MAY CAUSE CRASHES! ALSO I RECOMMEND AFTER YOU COMPLETELY DEFRAG YOU HARD DRIVE, DEFRAG IT AGAIN EVERY DAY(should take less than 30 mins) OR 3 TIMES A WEEK.

note: many of you guys are probably going to say that this is a MOD, but this is NOT a mod!, Also this is BETA release its still not perfect we have another one(for next update) thats better than this one, but it still has some problems. And lastly if you don't feel like using the updated BETA, the outdated one still works located at the bottom.

(Since I have access to unlimited computer parts, thanks to my uncle, I gathered the most common graphic cards and processors, for testing)

GRAPHIC CARDS TESTED:
Radeon HD 3000IGP
Radeon HD 4250IGP
Radeon HD 5670

I decided to work on the LOWEST graphics cards as you can see I managed to make GTA IV run on an old HP Pavilion Dv2000 with onboard nVidia 6150. The game wasn't playable but the most frames per second I saw was 9, after I added my tweak the game was really playable!, the max frames per second I saw was 17, average 12, and game play was really smooth, but as you can see in the picture it had missing textures, something that I did't fix, well simply because im NOT going to be playing on onboard 6150.(USED THE SLOW TWEAK)

This next picture was tested with the 9600GSO, AMD Athlon X2, and 4GB of ram. We all know that in the beach is were we get the best frames per second, but for many they still can't get enough FPS and some are still lagging in the beach. As you can see here its getting easily over 100FPS, and if you guys are wondering, in the city I got an average of 61FPS and in interiors 80+FPS.(USED THE SLOW TWEAK)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

FOLLOW THESE 10 STEPS BEFORE INSTALLING THE TWEAK, IF YOU DECIDE TO INSTALL THE TWEAK WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE STEPS THERE IS A CHANCE YOU WILL GET MINOR LAG SPIKES, AND AS I SAID BEFORE THIS MIGHT WORK FOR YOU. FOR SOME YOU WONT GAIN ANY FPS BUT THE GAME WILL BE REALLY SMOOTH AND PLAYABLE AND FOR SOME IT WILL GAIN BOTH FPS AND SMOTHNESS.

NOTE: TO RUN THE GAME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, TO START THE GAME START IT FROM THE GTA MAIN FOLDER LOOK FOR "LAUNCHGTAIV".

STEP 0:------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to "START > MY COMPUTER > HDD > PROGRAM FILES > ROCK STAR GAMES > GRAND THEF AUTO IV" and create a new folder called "BACKUP". Copy the "PC" and "Common" folder as well as the "LaunchGTAIV" into the backup folder you just created. This will be the backup files just in case you decide to uninstall this tweak.

STEP 1:------------------------------------------------------------------------
Find out how well your pc can run the game with the specs you currently have, this will aslo let you know wich Fix you need out of the three. Scroll down and look for the GTA IV and see how well you can run it. If your pc is slow according to the chart then you will get the "SLOW" fix, if you
barely pass you will get the "MEDIUM" and so on.

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/)

STEP 2:------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Original "gtxd.img" will need to be replaced. The original causes some random lags and it also causes low FPS. This won't affect the way the game looks (graphics), it will just make the game a bit faster. Once you have downloaded the new gtxd file place it in "START > MY COMPUTER > HDD > PROGRAM FILES > ROCK STAR GAMES > GRAND THEF AUTO IV > PC > DATA > CD IMAGES" replace the old
one.

http://rapidshare.com/files/186766678/gtxd.rar (http://rapidshare.com/files/186766678/gtxd.rar)

STEP 3:(optional but recomended)-----------------------------------------------
Windows, Windows Vista(32-64bit) and windows 7(32-64bit), make all games perform terrible due to the large amount of ram they use. Vista is the worst one, if you have 4GB or ram using vista, only about 2.3GB will be available for games (does not matter if you have the 64bit, and even though it says there is more
available). If you have Windows 7, games will perform a lot better than vista, but windows 7 has many bugs for gaming. This causes the games to lag or get low FPS in high end games. What I recommend, is downgrading to Widnows XP. Windows XP performs faster than Vista or 7. Game wise, Windows XP makes all high end
games perform better with better FPS and less lag!! NOT A JOKE!

STEP 4:------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to "RUN" an type "msconfig". You will see a small window named "System Configuration Utility", choose the "Sercives" tab(this is all the programs that are running). Scroll down untill you find the "Event Log".Once
you find the "Event Log" disable it by removing the green checkmark. Now click "Apply" then "OK", then close. Restart the Computer, if you get a window once you log in after reboot, just close the box and ignore it.

STEP 5:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are going to check the slowest part in the computer, wich is the Hard Drive. When the hard drive is fragmented, it will perform 30-50 percent slower than what they are supposed to perform. Go to "START > MY COMPUTER > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS(in windows XP)". Remove any unused programs, or programs that are not really necessary, like any unused toolbars usually for internet explorer. Once you are done removing all the unecessary programs, download this HDD defragment program, its fast and safe.(Don't use the one thats included with windows, its too slow and it does not defrag correctly. Also defrag just the GTA 4 folder when its done defragmenting the HDD.

http://www.piriform.com/defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler)

STEP 6:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Another Slow part of a computer is the regestry, having a regestry that has missing files, will cause windows to have a slow response time, wich will cause all types of problems when playing high end games. We are going to defrag the regestry and then we are going to check for problems. This won't take long, and both programs are safe.

http://www.winmend.com/registry-defrag/ (http://www.winmend.com/registry-defrag/)
http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/registry-repair/ (http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/registry-repair/)

STEP 7:(OPTIONAL)-------------------------------------------------------------
Download CCLeaner, clean your hard drive, and also scan the regestry for issues. You can also use the one windows provided found on "START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEAN UP"

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner)

STEP 8:------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update your video drivers, For nVidia users, there are now good updated drivers located in the nVidia website I provided. Choose your graphic card! For ATI Download the latest drivers from your card.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us)
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx)

STEP 9:-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to your graphics setings, for nVidia got to Nvidia Control Panel found in the control panel and for ATI got to the Catalist(< I think not familiar with ATI), change the settings to performance.

STEP 10:------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally install the "Grand Theft Auto Lag Fix", Once the installation is done, you will see a "Contig" and a "GTA 4 Downgrader" on the GTA IV main folder. First select the "Contig" file and make a shortcut to the desktop. After you
create the contig shortcut, right click and go to properties. Once on properties look at "Target" everything should be highlighted, DON'T DELETE IT, at the end make a space and an -S, like this ""C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\For Slow\Contig.exe" -s" once you have eddited the contig shortcut run it,
you will get a CMD window, don't don anything just let it run intill it finishes should not take that long, 10-30 minutes depending on your computer speed. Next on the GTA IV main folder look for "GTA 4 Downgrader", for this one you don't need to make a shortcut just run it, again you sould get a CMD window,
don't do anything just let it finish should not take that long just a few seconds. Once its done ill ask you to restart the system. This will be the last restart.

UNINSTALL!!!--------------------------------------------------------------------
To uninstall this mod simply got to the Grand Theft Auto Main Derectory and find the icon that says "uninstall" all files will be removed. But backup files won't install automatically, you will have to install the backups yourself with the backups you created.

NOTE: IF UNINSTALLING THE GAME MAKE SURE YOU FIRST REMOVE THIS TWEAK, OR IT MIGHT NOT UNINSTALL.

IMPORTANT
Once you have downloaded your tweak, make sure to mess with the graphic settings, believe it or not like I said on the outdated tweak, for some it will lag on low graphic settings and for some it won't lag on high graphic settings. DON'T be afraid to mess with the settings. If you are interested on what I did, after you install the tweak, look for "LAG README" on the Grand Theft Auto IV main folder.

OUTDATED BUT STILL WORKS

THIS IS ONLY FOR NVIDA GRAPHIC CARDS(Doesn't work well on ATI, sometimes it doesn't work at all!)

Make sure u have the latest patches installed for gta iv and social club.... The best patch in my opinion that works best is the 1.0.3.0.

NOTE:This may or may not work for u, depending on how old or fast your pc is, it worked for me went up 17fps!!

WARNING: DO STEP 3 AT YOUR OWN RISK!! IF U STOP IT OR U DO IT WRONG ILL PROBABLY WON'T SCREW THE GAME UP BUT JUST IN CASE FOLLOW IT CAREFULLY!!!! :)

For 7 series:
Haven't tested on the oldest ones but it did show improvement on the 7900!

For 8 series:
8400gt, 8500gt, 8600gt 256mb-1GB

For 9 series:
9400gt, 9500gt, 9600gt 256mb-512MB ONLY!

Those are the cards that have more trouble playing GTA IV, but luckly there is a solution without overclocking your graphics card! Since my gamming pc isn't fully done i decided to look for a solution for my 8500gt, the game lagged like crazy, i was getting around 19-21 fps on all low and on high around 5-9 fps!! Even though some people can play the game, getting an average of 27-32 fps on the graphic cards listed above, it did show an improvement form 32 to 46fps!! At the end When i finished I ran the game and from 21fps im getting an average of 32 fps!!!(30-32 on the outside and 32-40 on interiors!)

I dont have a verry fast pc or a verry slow one here is my pc:
PC:Gateway GT4022
Processor:AMD Athlon 64 @ 2.41GHz Performance rated at 4.0HGz
Ram:1.50 GB of ram (DDR)
Hard Drive 200GB
Video card: GeForce 8500gt
As u can see my PC isn't fast or slow.

Follow this steps CAREFULLY!

1. Firs download this... http://www.4shared.com/file/116004096/db2708dc/commandline.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/116004096/db2708dc/commandline.html) its a command txt file. Place it in the game directory and don't eddit the file!!. For example: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV

2. Once the command file is in the game directory, download this other one.. http://rapidshare.com/files/186766678/gtxd.rar (http://rapidshare.com/files/186766678/gtxd.rar) and place it here C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\pc\data\cdimages DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A BACKUP!!

Here get's complicated.........
3. Download this other file.... http://www.4shared.com/file/116004163/2d178aab/Contig.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/116004163/2d178aab/Contig.html)

Pay attention most get this wrong! Extract the Contig file cut or copy the contig.exe to the game directory C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV and make a shorcut to the desktop should look like this... (http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1637/72245867.png)
after u have the shorcut right click it and go to properties...on TARGET add a SPACE at the end then -s like this... (http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/2848/11180448.png) then click apply or OK. On the contig shorcut on your desktop run it u should get a CMD box and it should be done in 5-10 mins depending on your computer. Its verry importand that u dont stop it u should let it finish.

4. The last thing you are going to do is get hacked Nvida drivers(new ones) it seemed that the drives were locking the FPS at 19-22!!! with hacked drives the fps are free and unlocked meaning that there are no restrictions!! u can download it here, just chose your graphics card series or model and download your driver!!!
http://downloads.guru3d.com/ (http://downloads.guru3d.com/)

Hope this helped.. It did for me i gained 17 FPS!!! If u need any help please leave a comment! :)

And yes it will help boost your FPS if u just want more performance!!!!!

Here is a pic getting 42 FPS without blurr on a geforce 8500gt!!!!!

Graphic stings: Almost high, little better than medium graphics!

And remember to mess around with the graphc settings for me on low settings it lags but on higher setting it doesn't lag! IDK...

AND ONCE AGAIN IF U NEED HELP LEAVE COMMENT AND ILL ANSWER..

Ive noticed that people are having trouble finding the video drivers so here there are:

I never created the topic, simply quoted it from the IV:MP Forums as you can see at the bottom of the post, but thanks.

And yes, a 9600GT is perfectly fine to run GTA IV, it is the exact card I am playing IV:MP with currently without any problems.

Not that this would help me, but people with worse PC's than myself. I can run GTA IV on highest resolution and details and get 45-60 fps stabile.

Please note that hacked drivers are not signed by Nvidia, they may cause you errors or bad performance depending on your PC configuration. (maybe not Gtaiv, but other games)

Contig.exe is defragger from Microsoft. It can defrag single directories, like gtaiv folder in this case.
You should always keep your hardrive defragmented anyways.

Be sure to make a copy of common/pc folders in Gtaiv directory !
Be sure to clean out previous graphic drivers before installing these. (example . Driversweeper)

No one mentioned formatting your PC, it said doing Defragmenter once in a while to make sure your system is organised.

Seems nice, tho i dont want to format my hard drive every week.

It's funny that i often find people who uses computer a lot, without knowing that it's necessary to keep their computers defragged!

A fragment is a piece. If you drop a vase on a concrete floor, you get fragmentation of the vase. Lots of little pieces. Which is pretty much what your data looks like on your hard drive after you've been using it for a few months. Ever try to stick all the little pieces of a smashed vase together again? Well, that's kinda what your computer has to do to get that file that you just tried to open. It's first got to find all those little pieces and stick them all together again, and then present this stuck together file to you.

Now here's the part where it gets worse. When you are finished with the file, and you save it, your computer breaks it up again into all these little pieces, plus some more little pieces that you just added with your edit, and it has to find all the places where it got the little pieces from in the first place, and put them back there. And you wondered why your computer was slow!

When we defragment our hard drive, we are giving the computer a chance to find all the little pieces of all the files, and enabling it to stick all these pieces together and keep them together by saving this whole file in one place on the hard drive. So when you request a file or document, the computer only has to search for one thing, which it joyfully finds and presents it to you on your screen in a very short time.

So make it for your hard working computer, and it should repay you with faster file retrieval, and a longer, trouble free life.

Windows has own defragment tool, but it's not as convinient as many other tool around.
Perfectdisk is awesome, altought you need to pay for it. Another great one is Iobit Smart Defrag, it's free and it supports automatic defragment also, so you dont need to take care of defragmenting, it does that when your not using your computer.

So basically when you complete all this procedures your hard drive gets fragmented? If it's like that, as you said it will cause slower file management. By the way I use PerfectDisk, too - great program.

Thanks for the advice Devin & Pude!

No, this does not corrupt your hard drive, they just suggest defragging your hard drive often to keep it running at its optimal potential,
If you do not defrag your PC often enough your files begin to get spread out throughout the drive causing slower loading time.

I know what the defragmentation does.. I didn't understand right other thing.. nevermind.

Unfortunately I seem to crash after some time too, although I love the difference it has made in gameplay.

As the creator said, this is still a beta, once the full release is complete, all bugs like the crashes will be gone.

Any chance your uncle (or you) could hook me up with a ATI Radeon HD 5770? ;)

And this is off-topic, but as I'm not really a great guy when it comes down to computers; do you need anything else if you install a new Video card, such as more gb's RAM or anything?

Depends on your motherboard. But surely, you'd get new components if you had a nice GPU. To balance the configuration.

Any chance your uncle (or you) could hook me up with a ATI Radeon HD 5770? ;)

And this is off-topic, but as I'm not really a great guy when it comes down to computers; do you need anything else if you install a new Video card, such as more gb's RAM or anything?

As I said, I did not make this topic, its quoted from IV:MP Forums.  ;)

How i see my Nvidia card?

It's a GT 320M CUDA 1GB

ATTENTION!

I would suggest No-One at all uses the "hacked drivers".
Yes they claim it may increase FPS but in turn it disables safety features AND can possible damage hardware.

The standard drivers from the manufacturers is perfect enough, you do not need to modify them by using the "hacked drivers".

I was thinking on that too.
My computer without that stuff goes to the 25 fps, thanks anyway.

Hey fellas!

A week ago, on HD4870 on Windows XP 32, I couldn't pass over 25FPS on low settings.. Windows 7 32bit could give me 55Fps.. and 64bit around 85FPS..

I just changed graphics card, from hd4870 512mb to HD6850 1GB, and I get over 140FPS on low now inside interiors.. and around 100+ stable when outside... I can't wait to test how much I'll get on Windows 7 64bit :D...

Thats Weird, most games that have been tested consistently ran 2-5FPS quicker on XP than Windows 7

Nope. That's pretty much wrong..

And why? because windows xp has a shitload of useless tasks going on.. compare how many tasks each one has on the task manager and then tell me ;).

Plus, you can not compare Windows XP 32BIT to Windows 7 64BIT if you were talking for the huge difference.. 25>85

What does this actually do? And does it change the way the game looks?
Im running an Athlon II x3 @ 3.3ghz with 4GB of 1420mhz ram and also a 9600GT.
Im playing on medium and get about 30-45 fps.

The biggest factor is your resolution. I could probably play on ultra graphics if i used 1024x768. Im using 1680x1050.
Dropping from 1920x1080p to 1024x768 doubles your fps in almost any situation.

Basically this will replace all of your graphic textures with new ones, it will look the same but the advantage is, there is no delay for them to load.
It also makes everything within the game looks far clearer and more crisp images, including FPS gain and smoother gameplay.

That is most likely a commandline box which opens when you do that, did you follow all the steps exactly as they have said?
It could be that something was missed/skipped which is now causing the problems. Try opening the singleplayer via "LaunchGTAIV" and see what happens.

You defragged whole hard drive, so there's no use for contig now. Contig.exe is just a defragger itself, published by Microsoft. In this case it defrags only gtaiv directory.
And if you follow the steps clearly, you were supposed to make a shorcut of it and add -S to it! And if you still want to use contig, after making that shortcut, and it still just flashes: Reason is that it cant evaluate it (you dont have a permission). Run it with administrator rights (right click that shortcut - run as administrator)

Copy? You mean shortcut, i hope.
Do you have win XP or Win7? If it's win7 that you're running and even if you're logged in as an administrator, you still need to rightclick that shortcut and hit 'run as administrator'.

Like i said previously, it's just a defragger itself.
You said you've already defragged your whole hard drive(s), so there's no use for contig for you right now.

Title: Re: How to remove lag and gain FPS on GTA IV
Post by: Devin on May 11, 2011, 08:16:19 pm
It all depends on your PC, if it is a really high-end system I would say 64bit, but if its average rather use 32bit, as 64 uses and needs far more system power.
If its an older PC, XP would probably run better, but then again Windows 7 doesnt use that much more system power than XP does.

Well its not useless if you have really high-end PC,but as most guys here dont have it its more recommended to turn it off than have about 20-25fps. Even for stronger computers is good to turn off such a stuff because its aint optimized well and cause more problems than benefits, especially Shadows and Vsync which can take half of average fps.

I would sacrifice some FPS to have clearer graphics with Shadow quality higher and Vsync on..

Hello, I downloaded GTA IV recently, and tried to play it on my laptop. I barely can play it, the game was unplayable, my game runs slow, the character runs slow, but its hard to play.

Here's the specs of my laptop:

Windows Vista Home Premium.
Manufacturer: Dell
Model : Inspiron 1545
Rating: 3.2
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Due CPU T6400 @ 2.00ghz 2.00 Ghz
Memory Ram: 3.00 GB
System type: 32-bit operating system
Graphics card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

My laptop does run GTA IV, but it runs slow, is there a way, to run GTA IV more faster on my laptop? someone please reply.

Thanks :)

Not really.

The CPU Is too outdated and slow.

The graphics card is also not quite up to par.

Doesn't meet the minimum requirements I'm afraid.

To run GTA IV on a laptop it requires quite a new laptop as the performance of laptops is far less than the performance of the equivalent desktop PC.
Mainly due to cooling, due to high temperatures and so on.

Mine can handle pretty much medium-high settings, with a low res (1024x768 [Fav. Res.]) and no shadows with around 45 fps.

Dual Core 2.3Ghz
Ati Radeon HD 4570 512Mb
4Gb RAM DDR3
Win 7 64 bit.

Lol my specs are.
Pentium E5300 dual core 2.6 ghz
2GB ram
Windows 7 32bit (home premium if that matters)
Ati Radeon HD4670 (or 4870 I forgot XD) 512MB
All settings on high/very high except for textures which are medium.
Yeah it goes in a range of 19 in sunny or rainy or foggy weather on the main road to 40 in the airport in cloudy weather.
Cloudy is the most fps friendly weather on IV. (just a tip for whoever can change it XD)
Anyway, I had no idea my PC could run IV on 40fps, but it does(in specific conditions :))
Wonder what will happen after all 8 steps i`m gonna do are done XD
EDIT: By itself it didn`t seem to make a big difference, but then i put it in combo with visual iv, and that made my game better than ever :)

How does it work for high-end PCs? Did anyone try it? I get 50-80 FPS almost maxed out but when there are lot of lights in the evening (and lots of cars) FPS could fall to 40 (almost laggy for me :P). I don't want it to decrease the quality in any way.

It doesnt decrease the quality, it simple re-textures the game, making items clearer and smoother. Also giving an FPS boost.

Personally I believe all of this contig business is nothing but a placebo as are a lot of "fixes" out there. I will be surprised if you get a frame rate increase that's not simply in your mind because of the placebo effect.

The best "fix" that someone can do is to upgrade components or simply buy a new computer. If your too young to work save up or do some little odd jobs for people your money will soon be adding up.

That is not the best fix people can do. I have applied multiple fixes to my game and gained about 5-10FPS. These things can make the game run smoother for people with crappy hardware and I m living proof :D. Kenzaki, I also suggest u adjust your ingame setting correctly. There are many things that will give you big boost for FPS and make the game run smoother. Such as Tri Linear texture filter and no shadows. Those 2 things itself should give a noticeable result. For me it did atleast.

I didn't really understand Step #10, it confused me. What's that 'GTA Lag fix' and how exactly do you launch it or where can you get access to it? I've done the 'contig' part and everything is fine. What exactly is this Grand Theft Auto Lag Fix? Plus I've been trying to isntall Tweak. I got patch 1.0.7.0 but tweak won't run on that patch.. :(
Quote

The tip is, that sometimes on quad core processors GTA IV and other programs tend torun on only 2 cores and you have to enable the rest of the cores for your GTA IV not to lag.
LTL went from 15 -70 fps if i got him right.
For those who don`t know, what you have to do is go to task manager ( when IV is running) right click on GTAIV.exe, click "set affinity" and then you just check the empty boxes and voila you have lag free gaming.
However if you are a user of windows Vista/7 it might say "Blah blah you have no access and whatnot".
DON`T DESPAIR.
What you have to do is go to control panel and go to User Account Control and disable it by pulling the slider allllllllll the way down.
Then repeat step number 1 and voila, lag free gaming.
If it still doesn`t work hell will freeze XD

So that Non Ti version actually runs GTA IV with that quality(taking your youtube videos into consideration) while using fraps without any lag? Amazing.
Or you can get a GTX 580 from Asus :D
I'm getting GTX 580 from either Asus or MSI's Twin frozr. It's awesome.

9 page duscussion huh? Well, im not reading it all, but i will simply propose my experimental results as it worked for few and easy and quick to try. no game Restarts needed.

Graphics Settings>
Resolution: Best
Texture leave it as it is (Will avoid game RR) If doesnt help, try medium or high.
and everything else to lowest.. viewing distance to 1 and so on..

I normaly run on 56 FPS, but with these settings i reach around 100-300 FPS.. O_o.. Loading screen reachers 8,000+ FPS.. all sounds bullshit, so feel free to ignore.. try yourself.. players that did that had FPS increase of about 10-30 more..

IF you dont get any increase, then you need to delete your code-line..

I found yet another thing, it is a bit confusing but it looks interesting and I will try it and hopefully it works :P

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=384473&st=0 (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=384473&st=0) ( original post )

The Idea:

You've heard this rant a million times, GTAIV was future proofed all reflections and shadows are scaled with the resolution. A stupid yet seemingly unfix-able problem that makes the game a mess. Playing a game in 1024x768 or lower is not acceptable. If I wanted to do that I would pull out my P2/P3 with its 32/64mb graphic card. From looking at GTAIV, it has a lot of new technology but nothing that should struggle to run on 8800's or even 8600's. Its that resolution scaling, im sure of it!.

The Plan:

There must be a way to correct this mess. Lets look at our checklist.

- Configs/Settings Profiles in game directory? /fail.
- Will R*'s patch will add more options in? /fail.

Not long ago I figured out you can run in windowed mode in 800x600 and then stretch the window larger and it gets around R*'s quality scaling that would increase the reflection maps.etc that would lag the game and make objects/textures disappear and horrid pop-ins. It made the game look good because you weren't dealing with such a low resolution and the game played extremely well.

I wanted to look into this and see if you can achieve the same thing without stretched the window manually every time.

The Support:

After browsing the net, I noticed others used commandline.txt to set the size of their window, and some people have achieved resolutions over their memory limit without using -norestrictions and only using the resolution from the command lines. This instantly helped me find the answer I wanted.

How To Do It:

Theory:
Now my theory was that, if you have a memory limit on, and you enter a resolution in the command line that is unable to be achieved with that memory limit, it will still put you in that resolution, but the quality scaling will not be implemented. Therefore no disappearing objects/textures, no long or noticeable pop-in's, and less/no lag.

The trick is implementing the higher resolutions with you preferred graphic settings, by limiting your memory to just barely include the options you want, and then you force the resolution.

Steps:

1. Get rid of -nomemrestrict or any current commandlines you have. Run the game and let it die. When you run the game, go to the graphic options, turn your resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768 or whatever you want the reflection maps/resolution based quality to be at, I did 800x600 mainly because it looks simular to the rest and will give you the most performance. Use the rest of your memory budget in draw distance.etc.

2. If you cannot acheive the graphical settings you want with your currently memory budget do this next step. If you can, then you can skip this step.

make commandline.txt or append -availablevidmem (multiplier):
This command works like this, say I have 256mb vram. -availablevidmem 2.0 would make it say I have 512mb vram, its a multiplier.

So for getting our settings as we want it lets make a budget of 512mb vram, so -availablevidmem 2.0.

Open GTAIV, set resolution in the ingame settings to 800x600, set rest of the options to whatever you want (be reasonable).

Now continue to the next step.

3. Now you have your game set as you want it, but in a f-ugly resoltion, but we will fix that. Next step is to trick GTAIV, even people with 512mb graphic cards or even 1gb, this is even useful for them.

One of my buddies with a 8800GTX loves this tweak because it allows him to get much higher frames with very little to no graphical loss.

So now lets say all our desired settings ingame @ 800x600, use 650Mb. Ok. But say were now using a 1GB card so it says 650/1024Mb. This is a problem now because if we force -height 1080 -width 1920. We will end up with our ingame options changing to 1920x1080 giving us way more slowdowns because R* starts using that dam scaling reflection maps.etc with resolution.

So what we need to do now is limit the memory GTAIV sees to exactly the amount to run our game in 800x600 (or whatever quality refection maps.etc you want) with our desired settings.

So lets go back to our dilemma, we have a 1GB graphic card and the game only takes up 650mb with the settings we want in 800x600.

We can figure this out by doing some simple math.
1GB Card (650mb desired settings): 650/1024 = 0.635 (its 0.634 but give a tiny bit extra, just like a couple megabytes).

So you would use -availablevidmem 0.635 that would make the game detect you only have 650mb ram which barely fits the features you want in 800x600.

So now once we have figured that out your commandline.txt or your shortcut appending should look like this (depending on what resolution you want/your vidmem.etc):

-height 1080 -width 1920 -availablevidmem 0.65

and maybe you add stuff like (-framelimit, or -noblank or whatever).

*BUT DO NOT USE ANY UN-RESTRICTION (this includes the nomemrestrict and norestrictions or anything like that)!

4. Now when we start up our game. We will be in our desired resolution, and when we look in the game options it will say 800x600, even though we are in a way higher resolution and all your settings will be how you want them and your memory budget will be exactly the right amount or similar like 650/650 or 742/746.etc

Funny thing here you wont be able to go back cuz it will detect your memory budget is to low and the game is forcing a higher res, so you might not be able to leave the options screen now, so alt tab, and close the game. If all your settings looked right and it said 800x600 but was clearly in a higher res. Then you did everything right, if not, go retry.

5. Now restart the game and play. Yay, good fps, cheated GTAIV to not up the reflection quality with the resolution.

Additional Speed: If you happen to be running Vista x86/x64 and you have a directx10 capable graphic card. Do what elecg2 figured out. I tried creating empty/easy HLSL shaders and putting them in GTAIV to get rid of shadows and stuff but that didn't work.

However by doing what elecg2 tried, I got a huge performance increase,

Go to GTAIV folder, go into common, then shaders.

Backup everything in there <- !!!

Then copy the contents of win32_30_atidx10, and paste them into win32_30_nv8. Or just rename the folders, whatever makes you happy.

That gave me a significant performance boost and I have no graphical problems or abnormalities. Try it, if it causes you problems or decreased performance then just put it back to normal. With these steps you can get your game running beautifully in no time, or at least better than before.

Enjoy.
*Ill be adding screen shots tonight.

Please Sticky This, I'm tired of people complaining when the answer is right under their nose.

To do a test to actually see if you get any gain from this start your game with 800x600, rest settings how you want them, but start the game in windowed mode. Manually drag the window to your screen size. See if you have a performance increase there, if so. Then doing this big mess of text will help you achieve what you achieved there without having to start the game in windowed mode and manually resize it, thats all this thing does. If you don't get a gain from it then clearly this is no use to you. But it is use to a lot of people.

Now wheres my proof?
*Oh nice monkey, you showed us some screens but you have no proof!.
*Oh yes i do!.

Here the game is 800x600 in game options but tweaked to play at 1680x1050 (look at the highlights/sun reflection on the water):
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/2272/shad...0stretchye9.jpg (http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/2272/shad...0stretchye9.jpg)

Here is the game at 1680x1050 in game, no tweak (notice the waters highlights/sun reflection is not as stretched, higher res, because in the first screen we are cheating the reflections to not up with the res, also notice in the distance everything disappears):
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/1943/sh...1050normjv4.jpg (http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/1943/sh...1050normjv4.jpg)

And to keep things fair, in those water screens, the game was maxed, high textures, high render, full distance, full detail, hence the FPS remained 10 in both!.

I rather play the game in a higher res with no disappearing objects and no pop-ins with lower reflection maps, than the game in a high res with better reflection maps but everything disappears.

This tweak shmozzle does something!, so its not a placebo. I'm happily running the game 1280x800 with medium tex, hi rend, always in the 20s. So I honestly can care less if you believe me, the evidence is here that it will help someone and if you don't believe me then don't. Ill go enjoy my game while you can sit there and sob.

If your settings constantly reset, please use what ircmaster wrote:
QUOTE

If your graphics settings reset every time you start it up again just follow this quick fix:

(Note this is the Vista way, I'm not sure how to do it in XP)

1. Go into your C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\Settings folder
2. Delete everything that's in there
3. Start the game with your desired settings and settings shouldn't reset anymore

And I'm not lying or trying to ruin your game or anything. I got this off of the official GTA IV support website.

Btw, you know what pisses me off, R* could have added a single checkbox that says "Quality Resolution" and then you check it or uncheck it, checked it would up the reflections with the resolution unchecked it would just do what were doing by doing this whole frag feast of text. Lazy R* (do you wanna sell more games?). And a single check box would not make the options complicated!.

Here is a commandline.txt i found in the replies that is win 7 ONLY!!!!

-width 640
-height 480
-refreshrate? 75
-novblank
-texturequality 1
-renderquality 0
-viewdistance 0
-detailquality 0
-shadowdensity 0
-nomemrestrict
-availablevidmem 4.5
-norestrictions
-percentvidmem 100
-noprecache
-safemode
-fullscreen
-framelimit 100
-Noswapdelay
-Managed
-Usedirectinput
-Waterquality 0
-Waterreflectionquality 0
-Reserve 0.3
-ReservedApp 0.5
-Forcer2vb
-DX10 / High
-Minspecaudio
-Shadowresolution 640
-Reflectionresolution 640
-No_3GB
EDIT!!!!
This commandline alone gave me 30 fps then i modified some lines in the commandline to suit my graphics-whore needs :P
(modified lines)
-width 1680
-height 1050
-refreshrate? 59
Still get extra 20 fps
gonna try the other stuff now.

I suggest putting your graphic settings in the game on low....you could also use a program called Game Booster...it's pretty good, I used to use it.

I've got problem, my PC specs are next:

nVidia GeForce 9600GS 256MB
RAM: 4GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P7530 @2.00GHz

And to add, its laptop. And its also limiting me when changing graphics and my game can't fill all of my desktop when playing in full screen mode, also I don't have any lag, except when I press W,A,S,D, I can look around and there is no lag just when driving and stuff, please help.

minimum requirements:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz

Memory: 1.5GB

Free Hard Drive Space: 16GB

Video Card: 256MB NVidia 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

DirectX 9 compatible Stereo Sound Card

i use laptop that has 8gb ram, i5 processor, 2gb graphics..... set all on lowest, i still don't get perfect 56 fps (frames per second) i am surprised that 256 mb graphics is minimum.

if i were you, i wouldnt even try running GTA IV on that graphics card. Real games are ment to be played on real gaming pc.

but if tips u want, never play games on battery, always use ac adapter to avoid losses in performance.

Let's be honest here, GTA IV is quite a bad PC port. My PC apparently runs on magic because it's not very powerful, yet I get 25-40 FPS on medium-high settings
EFLC was better, by about 20 FPS.
I have my specs scattered all over the forum by now so I don't feel like retyping, unless someone really really really REALLY wants to see them.

Third gen i7, 8GB RAM, GT650M 2GB, GTA IV and EFLC still lag as hell when driving at fast speeds, monitored the FPS with Fraps , they are around 40 normally (60-80 in Interiors), but rush down to 14 and under when driving.

I have the original game with latest patches installed. GTA IV is the worst PC game I ever experienced in terms of proper sync. But on the other hand, it is also the reason you buy a gaming PC/laptop. :/

Latest DMC is the perfect example of a proper and brilliant PC game, I get 80 FPS even on Ultra, and graphics are better than GTA IV. It really amazes me.

GTA IV is itself a ****** game.My bro had the same problem too and he deleted the game.Though he had a laptop 5x better than it really needed.

The thing with latops is that they kinda suck for gaming anyway, no matter what specs, A high end gaming laptop would probably run GTA IV as well as a mid-high range desktop you can get for half the price.
My stance on this has always been "If you wanna have a laptop, get a laptop, if you wanna game, get a desktop"
