Title: The demise of Encyclopedia Dramatica
Post by: JDC on April 17, 2011, 10:41:01 pm
"Good night, sweet prince."

The cries of this eulogy can be heard from many different users across the interweb, after the era of the notoriously infamous Encyclopedia Dramatica draws to a close, as ED has been replaced with a website known as "Oh Internet". Encyclopedia Dramatica's no-holds barred, extremely blunt, and merciless approach has been abandoned for the more conformist-friendly, mainstream SFW approach of Oh Internet, much to the dismay (particularly Anon) and rejoicing of many across the globe.

Critics of the new site view the staff of Oh Internet of having sold out by conforming the site to mainstream standards, while its supporters advocate that a website notorious for its inflammatory content such as ED deserved to be expunged from the internet.

It has been said that ED was one of the greatest repositories of Internet Culture, and that disposing of the site meant erasing a huge part of internet history. On the other hand, it has been labeled as the most notorious Troll Wiki in the world.

Now, I would like to hear the thoughts and opinions of Argonathians on this matter. Are you for or against it, and why?

I feel like ED is trolling us.. Although there are many ED clones up and there has been released a complete archive of articles including images, logs and more on a torrent site..
Lets hope they come back or someone successfully sets up a clone site :B

Doesn't sound too important to me, never heard about it and it appears that I'll never will.

Personally I am not one who condones or advocates troll culture, but I could not help but be pissed at the fact that the ED owner decided to sell out in the name of "mainstreaming" and money. Some of the editors even begged to work additional so they can support the site, but its owner only saw dollar signs in his eyes.

We already have enough websites like Know Your Meme out there, whose articles far exceed Oh Internet's in number. My view of Oh Internet is that it is a shitty excuse for internet censorship, having been the product of the restrainment of one of the last remaining all-out, anarchic depictions of internet culture.

The owner was a female, hence the stupidity of the decision taken.

GirlVinyl presided over and ran the site for six years, but the actual owner who sold ED was a male.

I think we can perhaps say the owner trolled all of the ED fans.

Now into the topic; I always used to read ED stuff when I needed something to laugh at. It's got some pretty good humor.

I do not support the trolling itself. But the ED has it's sense of wicked humor that I enjoyed somewhat.

Especially the sarcastic twisted parodies on certain products. And not an single country got away without being parodied and joked about on that site.

An shame to see it gone.

As one disgrunted user said... "the lulz will bring back ED".

To be honest, they have some articles that are actually worth of value.

Example: Creepypasta (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.ch/Creepypasta)
